Grid-scale batteries do not have one fixed lifespan. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2022 assessment found that most of the lithium-ion literature it reviewed placed system life at 10–20 years, while the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s 2024 utility-scale model assumes a 15-year life and includes augmentation to maintain rated capacity. Those figures describe a literature range and a planning model—not a guarantee for every battery project.
Actual service life depends on how a battery ages, how it is operated, what “end of life” means for the project, and whether aging cells are augmented or replaced. Calendar age matters even when a battery is idle; charge-and-discharge use matters too.

What does “battery lifetime” mean?
A grid-scale battery can have more than one meaningful lifetime figure. A published number might refer to the years a battery is expected to operate, the number of charge-and-discharge cycles it can complete, the time until its capacity falls below a chosen threshold, or the useful life of the complete project. Those measures are related, but they are not interchangeable.
For example, a cell may lose capacity while the wider installation continues serving its role after maintenance, augmentation, or replacement of some components. Conversely, a cell’s cycle rating does not by itself tell you how many calendar years the project can operate. Any lifespan estimate is more useful when it identifies the equipment being counted and the condition that defines the end of its useful life.

Cell life, system life, and project life
- Cell or pack life describes the aging of the electrochemical units that store energy.
- System life refers to the battery installation as a working system. Its operation can involve maintenance and replacement needs, not just the original cells.
- Project life is the period the project is planned or modelled to serve. It can extend beyond the life of original cells if components are augmented or replaced.
This distinction explains why a project-life assumption should not be read as a promise that every original cell will retain its initial capacity for that whole period. It also explains why a cycle count alone is an incomplete description of a grid battery’s useful service.
How long do grid-scale batteries last?
The best broad answer supported by the cited evidence is that the reviewed lithium-ion literature generally places system life in a 10–20-year range. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2022 assessment says many estimates fall toward the lower end of that range and notes that maintenance and replacement needs are relevant. The range is not a universal specification for every chemistry, design, operating pattern, or site.
NREL’s 2024 utility-scale cost and performance basis uses a 15-year lifetime in its model and includes augmentation costs intended to allow operation at rated capacity during that modelled period. Its usage assumption is approximately one cycle per day. This is a modelling basis for utility-scale analysis, not an observed life outcome or a prediction that applies to all installations.
These estimates answer different questions: DOE summarizes a range in the literature, while NREL uses a defined assumption in a utility-scale model. Neither figure should be presented without its source, date, and basis. When someone gives a single number without those details, it may be unclear whether they mean the original cells, the maintained battery system, or the project.

How calendar aging and cycling affect a battery
Battery degradation has at least two distinct pathways. NREL’s System Advisor Model (SAM) help documentation defines calendar degradation as a reduction in battery capacity due to age, regardless of how the battery is used. Cycle degradation is associated with charging and discharging. When cycling occurs, NREL’s Storage Futures Study says that, under its definitions, the lesser of calendar life or cycle life determines actual lifetime.
Calendar degradation continues with age
A battery does not have to be dispatched to age. SAM describes empirical lithium-ion calendar-aging models that account for time, temperature, and state of charge. As a result, “the battery was not cycled much” does not, by itself, establish that it has avoided degradation. Time spent at a particular temperature or state of charge can matter even while the system is waiting for a dispatch instruction.
Cycle degradation depends on how the battery is used
Charging and discharging contribute to cycle aging, but counting cycles without describing the conditions can mislead. The depth of discharge, operating window, charge and discharge rates, and pattern of cycling all help define the use being counted. A cycle total is therefore not a stand-alone measure that transfers unchanged between projects.

The DOE’s 2022 assessment includes an example assumption of 3,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge alongside a 10-year calendar-life assumption. That is an assessment assumption, not a universal current product specification or a guarantee that a project will reach that cycle count under any operating conditions. The calendar and cycle figures should be read together with their stated assumptions.

Which operating conditions affect degradation?
NREL’s battery lifespan material identifies temperature, operating windows, charge and discharge rates, storage environment, and cycling patterns as relevant influences. Depth of discharge and state-of-charge history also matter when evaluating operating conditions. These factors interact with electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical degradation; their individual effects are not identical across every chemistry or installation.
- Temperature: It is relevant to aging, including the calendar-aging models described by SAM. The effect depends on the battery and its conditions; the cited material does not establish one temperature penalty that applies to every system.
- State of charge and operating window: The battery’s state-of-charge history and the range in which it operates form part of the conditions behind its aging. Two systems with similar cycle totals may therefore have different histories.
- Depth of discharge: A cycle count is more informative when it states how deeply the battery was discharged. DOE’s example pairs its 3,500-cycle assumption with 80% depth of discharge for this reason.
- Charge and discharge rates: The rates at which energy is put into or drawn from the battery are among the factors identified in NREL’s lifespan material; a lifetime estimate should not quietly assume that all duty cycles are equivalent.
- Storage environment and cycling pattern: Where and how the system is stored and the pattern of its dispatch contribute context to any degradation estimate.
No single factor can be isolated as the decisive cause for every project from these general findings. A credible estimate needs the combined operating profile and system design rather than a bare cycle count or calendar-age figure.
What augmentation and replacement change
Augmentation means adding capacity or battery components to support a system as its original cells age. Replacement means changing some or all cells or packs. NREL’s Storage Futures Study notes that replacing some or all cells or packs can extend system life; its 2024 utility-scale baseline models augmentation costs over a 15-year life so rated capacity can be maintained in the model.

The original cells continue to age, but maintaining or renewing parts of the installation can allow the system to keep operating. A project’s stated life may therefore depend on what its plan assumes will be augmented or replaced and when. The available figures do not establish a universal replacement schedule or a fixed amount of augmentation needed for every site.

When comparing project estimates, check whether the quoted lifetime includes these interventions. A figure based on continued operation with augmentation is not the same as a claim about how long the original battery capacity remains unchanged. Likewise, a project-life estimate that allows replacements should not be treated as an original-cell warranty term.

Two published estimates can appear to conflict while using different definitions or assumptions. Before comparing them, identify what each number is measuring and the conditions attached to it.
- Identify the unit of analysis. Is the number for cells, packs, the complete battery system, or a project that may receive maintenance and replacements?
- Find the end-of-life criterion. What capacity or performance threshold ends the stated life? If the source does not specify a threshold, do not assume one.
- Check chemistry and system design. A figure associated with one chemistry or configuration should not be generalized to all battery systems.
- Read the use conditions. Look for depth of discharge, cycle frequency, operating window, charge and discharge rates, temperature, state of charge, and cycling pattern.
- Check the time basis. Distinguish calendar life from cycle life, and note whether the estimate is a literature range, model input, warranty term, or observed result.
- Look for augmentation and replacement assumptions. Establish whether the estimate covers the original cells alone or a maintained system that can receive additional capacity or replacement components.
DOE’s 2022 assessment reports a spread in published life-year and cycle estimates and treats maintenance and replacement as relevant to operation. NREL’s 15-year figure, by contrast, is a 2024 utility-scale model assumption with augmentation costs. Comparing either with a warranty or a product specification requires checking whether the definitions and operating conditions match.

The DOE’s 2022 assessment cites examples of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) warranty terms of 10–15 years or 10,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge. These are examples cited in that assessment; warranty terms vary and should not be treated as a current, universal promise for LFP batteries.

A warranty term is not automatically the same thing as a technical estimate of calendar life, a cycle-life test result, or the planned life of a project. For a specific installation, the applicable warranty and its conditions need to be checked directly. The assessment’s examples alone do not establish what a particular current product or project promises.
A practical way to read a lifespan estimate
When assessing a proposed or reported lifetime, write the claim in a form that keeps its assumptions visible: identify whether it is calendar, cycle, system, or project life; name the source and year; state the relevant operating conditions; identify the end-of-life threshold if specified; and note whether augmentation or replacement is included. If one of those details is missing, treat the figure as incomplete rather than filling the gap with assumptions.
For instance, DOE’s 10–20-year range is a summary of most lithium-ion system-life literature it reviewed in 2022, while NREL’s 15-year figure is a utility-scale modelling assumption from 2024 that incorporates augmentation intended to maintain rated capacity. They can both be accurate descriptions of their respective evidence without meaning that every grid-scale battery will last 15 years, or that every system will reach 20.
