How Long Does a OnePlus Open Beta Get Updates—and Is It Safe for Daily Use?

OnePlus’s four-generation Android and five-year security commitment applies to the OnePlus Open, not to a specific beta branch. Here’s what that means for update timing and daily-use risk.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no stated fixed update term for an individual OnePlus Open beta branch. OnePlus promises the OnePlus Open at least four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates from launch, but that is a device-level support commitment—not a promise that a beta branch will be maintained for four generations or five years.

For a phone you depend on every day, the stable public OTA channel is the safer choice. OnePlus warns that beta builds may be less stable and reliable than public releases, and recommends backing up important data before installing. That warning does not establish that every beta has the same problems, but it is a reason to treat beta software as optional testing rather than a guaranteed daily-use release.

How long does a OnePlus Open beta receive updates?

OnePlus has not stated a fixed maintenance period or update frequency for an individual OnePlus Open beta in the program notice discussed here. The beta could receive updates while OnePlus is developing that software, but the available official information does not establish a schedule, a minimum number of beta releases, or a date when a particular beta branch will end.

Keep that answer separate from the phone’s broader software-support policy. OnePlus’s OnePlus Open specifications state that the device receives at least four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates from its launch date. Those commitments describe device support; they do not guarantee that a particular open-beta build or branch will be updated throughout that period.

Device support and beta support are different promises

An Android OS upgrade moves the phone to a newer Android generation. A security update addresses security fixes. Beta updates, by contrast, belong to a testing channel for software under development. A device can remain eligible for OS and security support even when a particular beta program has ended or changed. The policy should not be used to calculate a beta end date.

The product specification says the support period runs from launch, but the cited material does not give a precise final calendar date for every regional variant. It also does not promise a beta maintenance window. Avoid treating the five-year security term as a prediction of how frequently beta updates will arrive.

In practical terms, the support promise answers how long OnePlus says the device will receive certain categories of software support; it does not answer how often an enrolled tester will see a beta build. Nor does it establish that every beta feature, build, or testing program will remain available for the whole device-support period. If you are choosing whether to join a particular beta, look for that program’s own announcement rather than using the handset’s long-term support figure as a substitute.

Is a OnePlus Open beta safe for a daily-use phone?

It may work for some users, but OnePlus explicitly warns that its OxygenOS 16 beta builds may be less stable and reliable than public OTA releases. The company recommends backing up important data before installation. That is a caution about the named beta program, not proof that every beta release will fail or that all users will encounter problems.

OnePlus’s OxygenOS Team put the warning plainly: “These builds may be less stable and reliable than our official public OTA releases.” That comparison is useful when deciding how much risk to accept, but it is not a reported defect rate or a guarantee that the stable channel will never have problems. The official notice gives no failure statistics, so there is no sound basis for estimating the odds that a particular beta will cause trouble.

A separate OnePlus announcement for Android 15 Beta 1 on the OnePlus Open and OnePlus 12 described that build as intended for developers and advanced users. It advised against flashing that ROM if a user had limited software-development experience, planned to use the device as a primary driver, or lacked experience with custom ROM installations. Apply that caution to the Android 15 Beta 1 build it covered; it is not evidence that every later beta has identical limitations.

If missed calls, work access, travel, messaging, or essential apps would create a serious problem, use the stable public OTA channel. A beta is a more reasonable choice for someone technically experienced who can tolerate possible instability, is prepared to report issues, and has a current backup and a workable recovery plan. This is a conservative decision based on OnePlus’s published warnings, not a claim that the phone has been independently tested here.

“Safe” therefore depends partly on what the phone is needed for and how prepared you are to troubleshoot. If the handset is your only way to handle time-sensitive communications or work, even an uncertain possibility of disruption may be too much. If you have another reliable way to stay connected, can restore important data, and are comfortable following the exact release instructions, the tradeoff may be acceptable. OnePlus’s notices do not say that beta software is certain to fail; they do make clear that it should not be treated as having the same reliability expectation as a public OTA.

Beta and stable updates: what the evidence supports

Consideration Open beta Stable public OTA
Reliability OnePlus says OxygenOS 16 beta builds may be less stable and reliable than public OTA releases. OnePlus presents public OTA releases as the comparison point for beta stability; the cited notice does not guarantee that every public update is problem-free.
Support duration No fixed maintenance duration or cadence for an individual beta branch is stated in the cited program notice. The OnePlus Open has a device-level commitment of at least four Android OS upgrade generations and five years of security updates from launch; this is not a promise of a fixed OTA frequency.
Availability Enrollment can be version- and region-specific. The OxygenOS 16 recruitment notice was then limited to India and required specified prerequisite software versions. OTA distribution can be staged. OnePlus said its September 2026 rollout would begin with a small percentage of users before expanding.
Preparation OnePlus recommends backing up important data before installing the cited OxygenOS 16 beta. The cited stable-update announcement describes rollout timing, not a special backup requirement.

The table summarizes what OnePlus has stated about these specific notices. It should not be read as a guarantee that every beta is unstable, that every public update arrives immediately, or that beta access is currently open in a particular country.

The comparison also separates two different choices: whether a phone is eligible to receive an update, and whether you want to install a testing build. A beta may offer access to software under development, but the notices here do not promise a particular feature, delivery date, or continuing update stream. A stable OTA may arrive later or in stages, but it is the more appropriate channel when predictable day-to-day use matters more than testing access.

Check whether a beta is actually available for your phone

Beta eligibility is not necessarily global or permanent. The OxygenOS 16 Open Beta recruitment post was published on October 9, 2025. At that stage, OnePlus listed India as the available region, an application window from October 9 through October 13, and prerequisite software versions. Those dates and requirements describe that recruitment event; they are historical, not current enrollment instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before acting on an old announcement or a post from another region, confirm that the current beta listing applies to your OnePlus Open, region, and installed software version. Read the full release notice for the exact build and instructions. Do not assume that eligibility for one beta means eligibility for another, or that a beta can be installed from any starting version.

In particular, a past application window is not evidence that applications remain open, and an announcement for India is not proof that the same program is available elsewhere. Treat the listed prerequisite build as specific to that recruitment, not as a universal requirement for future betas. Check the current in-device beta listing and the announcement for the release you are considering; if the region or starting software version does not match, do not assume that the instructions apply to your phone.

How to decide before installing

  1. Decide whether you can tolerate disruption. If you need the phone for dependable calls, work apps, travel, or essential services, stay on stable public OTAs. OnePlus’s beta warning is enough to make that the cautious default.
  2. Check the exact announcement. Confirm the software version, eligible region, prerequisite build, application window, and installation directions for the specific beta. The 2025 OxygenOS 16 notice is not a current enrollment guarantee.
  3. Back up important data first. OnePlus specifically recommends this before installing the cited OxygenOS 16 beta. Make sure the backup is current and that you can access it independently of the phone.
  4. Have a recovery plan before changing channels. Be prepared to follow the official instructions for that release if you need to leave the beta or recover the device. The cited notices do not establish one universal rollback procedure, so do not assume that leaving a beta is a simple toggle or that it preserves all data.
  5. Allow for staged delivery. An announced OTA may not appear on every eligible phone immediately. Check official updates for your region and build rather than assuming a delay means your device is unsupported.

A recovery plan should be in place before you install, not improvised after a problem. At minimum, know where your backup is and make sure you can reach the official instructions for the exact build. The OnePlus notices referenced here do not document a single rollback path that applies to every beta, so avoid relying on an assumed button, guaranteed return to stable software, or data-preserving exit. If you cannot accept the possibility of having to troubleshoot, that is a strong reason to remain on the public channel.

What recent update evidence does—and does not—show

On September 21, 2026, OnePlus announced OxygenOS 16.0.5.1301 for the OnePlus Open in India, Europe, and North America and listed the September 2026 Android security patch. The announcement said the OTA rollout would begin with a small percentage of users and then broaden. It is evidence of a stable public update announcement in those regions at that time, not proof that every eligible phone or carrier received it on the same day.

That rollout example also illustrates why an announced update date is not the same as an individual phone’s delivery date. Availability can vary during a staged release. It does not establish a recurring cadence for stable updates, and it says nothing about how long a separate beta branch will be maintained.

Staging matters when you are checking for an update: a rollout can be announced while some eligible users have not yet received it. The September 2026 notice says OnePlus planned to start with a small percentage and expand, but it does not specify a universal arrival time for every device. A delay by itself therefore should not be read as proof that a phone is ineligible, nor should one regional rollout be taken as confirmation of availability in every market.

Why haven’t I received an announced OTA yet?

OnePlus said its September 21, 2026 OxygenOS 16.0.5.1301 rollout would start with a small percentage of users and then broaden. An announcement did not mean every eligible phone would receive the update at once. Check official information for your region and build.

Bottom line for OnePlus Open owners

For the phone’s overall support horizon, OnePlus states at least four Android OS upgrade generations and five years of security updates from launch. For a specific open beta, there is no stated fixed update term or frequency in the cited program notice. If your OnePlus Open is a daily-use phone you cannot afford to troubleshoot, choose stable public OTAs. Consider beta software only when the exact release is available to your device and region, you understand its stated risks, and you have a backup and recovery plan.
