Calculate an upper-limit runtime by dividing gas mass by consumption in kilograms per hour. As manufacturer examples show, a 9 kg bottle lasts about 18 hours in the original Gozney Dome, while 10 kg lasts about 15.4–15.6 hours in the Dome Gen 2 and 13.3–13.7 hours in the Dome XL Gen 2 at continuous full power. Real cooking sessions are shorter or longer depending on preheating and burner settings.
What the runtime number actually means
“How long” can describe two different measurements:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Full-power runtime: the theoretical time a burner could run continuously at its stated maximum consumption.
- Cooking-session runtime: how many pizza-making sessions you can complete after preheating and adjusting the flame during cooking.
Full-power hours are useful for comparing ovens, but they are not a promise of a particular number of pizzas or weekends of use. A session includes heat-up time, pauses between pizzas and periods when the burner is turned down. Weather and starting temperature also affect how much fuel is consumed.

A bottle’s nominal size alone is not enough: the same 10 kg of propane lasts very different lengths of time in a compact domestic oven and a high-output commercial model.

The calculation: gas mass divided by consumption
Use this formula:
Estimated full-power hours = usable gas in the bottle (kg) ÷ oven consumption (kg/h)
If the manual gives grams per hour, convert first. For example, 600 g/h is 0.60 kg/h. Keep both values in the same unit before dividing.
Worked examples
- A 10 kg bottle used by an oven consuming 0.65 kg/h: 10 ÷ 0.65 = about 15.4 hours at continuous full power.
- An 11 kg bottle at the same 0.65 kg/h rate: 11 ÷ 0.65 = about 16.9 hours. This is arithmetic, not a guarantee that every 11 kg cylinder fits or is approved for that oven.
- A 9 kg bottle feeding a 0.60 kg/h oven: 9 ÷ 0.60 = 15 hours.
These results describe fuel burn at the stated rate. They do not subtract a preheat period or account for lower settings, so treat them as a ceiling for planning rather than a schedule.

The following figures come from model-specific specifications and statements. They should not be generalized to every gas pizza oven.
| Oven | Published LPG consumption | Bottle basis | Published or calculated full-power runtime | Session information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Gozney Dome | Approximately 592–614 g/h | 9 kg propane | About 18 hours, according to Gozney (2024) | No standardized session count stated |
| Gozney Dome Gen 2 | 0.65 kg/h | 10 kg | 15.4–15.6 hours at full power, according to Gozney (2026) | 10.4 two-hour sessions, each modeled as one hour at 100% and one hour at 50%; ambient temperature specified as 18–20°C |
| Gozney Dome XL Gen 2 | 0.75 kg/h | 10 kg | 13.3–13.7 hours at full power, according to Gozney (2026) | 9.1 of the same specified two-hour sessions at 18–20°C |
| Alfa Quick 6 commercial oven | 3 kg/h LPG | Not stated | Not stated by the product page; 10 kg ÷ 3 kg/h would be about 3.3 hours as a simple calculation | Commercial appliance; no comparable session estimate stated |
The spread is substantial. The consumer Dome figures are around 0.6–0.65 kg/h, whereas the Quick 6 specification is 3 kg/h. A cylinder that seems generous for a small outdoor oven can be depleted quickly by a commercial burner.

Why a real pizza session does not match the headline hours
Preheating consumes fuel before the first pizza
The full-power calculation assumes a continuous, steady burn. In practice, you may run the burner high while the stone and oven air reach cooking temperature. That fuel is part of the bottle’s consumption even though no pizza is in the oven yet.
Flame settings change the rate
Turning the burner down reduces consumption compared with the nameplate maximum. The Dome Gen 2 estimate of 10.4 sessions explicitly assumes one hour at full power and one hour at half power in each two-hour session. A different pattern—such as a long high-heat preheat followed by brief low-flame cooking—will produce a different result.
Session length and pauses matter
Leaving the oven lit while preparing toppings, waiting for guests or recovering heat between pizzas uses gas. Switching off during long pauses saves fuel, but the next preheat then uses additional gas. Count the entire time the burner is operating, not just the minutes when a pizza is inside.
Ambient conditions affect estimates
Gozney’s Gen 2 session figures are specified for 18–20°C. Colder or windier conditions can change warm-up time and heat loss. The figures therefore describe the stated test conditions, not a universal average for every location.
How to estimate gas left in a partly used bottle
You can get a useful estimate without waiting for the burner to run empty by weighing the cylinder.

- Disconnect the cylinder only as instructed by the appliance and regulator documentation.
- Weigh the complete cylinder on a suitable scale.
- Find the stamped tare weight (the empty-cylinder weight, often marked “TW” or “tare”) on the cylinder collar or body.
- Subtract tare weight from the total weight. The difference is the approximate gas mass remaining.
- Divide that remaining mass by the oven’s consumption rate.
For example, if a cylinder weighs 16.2 kg and its tare is 6.2 kg, approximately 10 kg of gas remains. In an oven rated at 0.65 kg/h, that represents about 15.4 theoretical full-power hours. If the scale result includes uncertainty or the bottle is cold, treat the answer as an estimate rather than an exact gauge reading.
A retailer calculator describing this method recommends using the consumption figure from the appliance manual, data plate or manufacturer. Do not substitute a generic rate from another oven.
What would a 9 kg, 10 kg or 11 kg bottle last?
The bottle mass must be paired with a specific consumption rate. The table below shows arithmetic examples only; the cylinder must also be approved for the oven and regulator.
| Oven consumption | 9 kg bottle | 10 kg bottle | 11 kg bottle |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.60 kg/h | 15.0 hours | 16.7 hours | 18.3 hours |
| 0.65 kg/h | 13.8 hours | 15.4 hours | 16.9 hours |
| 0.75 kg/h | 12.0 hours | 13.3 hours | 14.7 hours |
| 3.00 kg/h | 3.0 hours | 3.3 hours | 3.7 hours |
Do not read these cells as promises of cooking days. They are full-power divisions that help you compare fuel demand. A real session count requires an assumed preheat, burner profile and operating temperature, such as the controlled profile Gozney used for its Gen 2 figures.
Choosing a compatible cylinder and connection
Use the oven’s manual and local gas regulations to select the permitted fuel, cylinder capacity, regulator, hose and physical dimensions. LPG propane is not automatically interchangeable across appliances simply because the connector looks similar.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For example, an excerpt from the Piana Gas manual specifies LPG propane in a cylinder and permits a 4–13 kg capacity subject to dimensional limits. That is a requirement for that model, not a rule for other pizza ovens. Another oven may specify a different mass range, regulator pressure or cylinder shape.
- Check the exact gas type named on the oven data plate or manual.
- Confirm the approved cylinder mass range and dimensions.
- Use the regulator pressure and connection type specified by the manufacturer.
- Follow local installation, storage and inspection requirements.
If a larger bottle would improve runtime but exceeds the oven’s stated dimensions or capacity, do not use it. Choose a compliant cylinder and plan spare fuel instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Planning fuel for a cooking day
Start with the full-power estimate, then build a margin for the way you actually cook. If your oven consumes 0.65 kg/h and you expect a four-hour event with the burner operating for three of those hours at an average equivalent of 70% power, the simple planning use is approximately 1.37 kg (0.65 × 3 × 0.70). This is an operating estimate, not a manufacturer test, and it still needs allowance for unusually long preheating or cold conditions.
For repeated events, record the cylinder’s weight before and after each session. The difference gives your real gas consumption for that oven, weather and cooking style. After two or three comparable sessions, your own measured rate is more useful for planning than a generic “average,” provided you continue to verify that the appliance setup has not changed.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the bottle’s advertised size as usable gas
A “10 kg bottle” refers to its nominal gas fill, not the combined weight of gas and steel. When checking a partly used cylinder, subtract tare weight; never divide the cylinder’s total scale weight by the oven’s consumption.

Mixing grams and kilograms
Dividing 10 kg by 600 g/h without converting units produces a result that is wrong by a factor of 1,000. Convert 600 g/h to 0.60 kg/h, or convert 10 kg to 10,000 g.
Comparing different bottle sizes
“18 hours” from a 9 kg bottle cannot be compared directly with “15.4 hours” from a 10 kg bottle unless you also compare each oven’s consumption. Always put bottle mass and rate beside the runtime.
Treating a session estimate as a universal average
The Dome Gen 2 and Dome XL Gen 2 session counts use a defined two-hour pattern and 18–20°C conditions. Your burner schedule, preheat and weather may differ, so report those assumptions whenever you quote the numbers.

Fitting an unapproved cylinder
Capacity, dimensions, regulator and hose are appliance-specific. A bottle that physically connects may still violate the manual or local requirements. Verify compatibility before purchase or connection.
Quick Recap
A quick checklist before your next bake
- Read the oven’s LPG consumption from its current manual or data plate.
- Confirm the cylinder’s gas mass and subtract tare if it has already been used.
- Calculate full-power hours with mass ÷ kg/h.
- Add time for preheating and note how often you turn the burner down.
- Check that the cylinder, regulator, hose and dimensions meet the oven’s requirements.
- Weigh the bottle after the session if you want a measured planning rate for future cooks.
