There is no reliable one-size-fits-all runtime for gaming on battery: the laptop, game, battery condition and power settings all matter. As one specific example, TechRadar’s 2026 review found that an MSI Raider 16 Max HX dropped from full charge to 10% in just over two hours while playing Marathon online. That is one review result, not a prediction for other laptops or games.
Why gaming-laptop battery life varies
Gaming places a heavier demand on a laptop than light office work, so battery runtime depends on how much power the system draws and how much usable capacity the battery retains. MSI lists battery capacity, Windows power plan, processor speed, storage, display resolution, brightness and keyboard backlight as factors. The game’s workload, screen refresh rate, battery age and connected accessories also affect the result.

For a fair comparison between two runtime claims, check whether they use the same game and workload, starting charge and stopping percentage, brightness, refresh rate, performance mode, wireless and peripheral setup, and battery capacity and age. A gaming test is not directly comparable to a light-use or video-playback estimate.

Settings that can extend a gaming session
These adjustments reduce power use rather than increase the battery’s stored capacity. Lowering performance or display settings may change image quality, smoothness or gameplay. The available savings vary by system; the cited sources do not establish a fixed number of extra minutes for any one change.

Lower screen brightness and refresh rate
Reduce brightness to a comfortable level when unplugged. If your laptop offers a lower refresh rate, select it in Windows 11 at Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. A lower rate can use less power, but motion may look less smooth. MSI recommends lowering both brightness and refresh rate to conserve battery.
Choose an efficient Windows power mode
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Depending on the device, the options can include Best power efficiency, Balanced and Best performance. Microsoft describes Best power efficiency as saving battery life; Best performance prioritizes performance, while Balanced sits between those priorities. An efficiency-focused mode may reduce game performance, and available choices depend on the hardware and manufacturer.

Use the laptop maker’s power profile
Check the manufacturer’s control app for a supported battery-saving or energy-saving profile. Names and availability differ by model. MSI, for example, says its Energy-Saving Mode can lower performance to reduce consumption; use an equivalent option only if your laptop provides one.

Use Windows battery settings to review per-app battery use, then close work the game does not need. Windows also lets you choose a Power saving graphics preference for an app. On a hybrid-graphics laptop, that may help non-game apps avoid using the higher-power graphics processor; it is not a guarantee that a demanding game will run well on integrated graphics. Keep network access enabled when the game requires it. ASUS notes that connected USB or Thunderbolt devices can increase battery discharge, so disconnect peripherals you do not need.

Consider gaming-specific endurance features only when supported
Intel’s Endurance Gaming feature is a frame-rate and power trade-off, not a universal laptop setting. Intel says the added playtime depends heavily on system design and display power, and the feature does not manage power on systems with discrete graphics. Check the feature’s compatibility with your specific device rather than assuming it applies to all gaming laptops.

Battery-care features can help manage long-term battery health, but they do not make a single gaming session last longer on the current charge. ASUS describes Battery Health Charging and recommends storing a laptop at around 50% charge for long-term storage, with periodic recharging. These instructions are manufacturer- and model-specific; follow the guidance for your own laptop.

If runtime has noticeably worsened as the battery has aged, a compatible replacement may restore some lost capacity. Compatibility depends on the exact laptop model, so check its manufacturer support information before selecting a part. If the battery is swollen or deformed, MSI advises stopping use and contacting its customer service center.
