South Korean Stocks vs. Taiwan Stocks: How to Compare AI Chip Exposure

For a focused comparison of national stock-market exposure to AI chips, start with the MSCI Korea Index and MSCI Taiwan Index: both target large- and mid-cap companies in their respective markets. Then compare their biggest holdings and the businesses behind them—not just country labels. In the MSCI profile observations available here, Samsung Electronics represents 35.31% of MSCI Korea, while TSMC represents 55.16% of MSCI Taiwan. Those figures have different observation dates, so they illustrate concentration, not a synchronized, current head-to-head comparison.

Choose comparable benchmarks first

“South Korean stocks” and “Taiwan stocks” can refer to different things: a country index, the full local exchange, or a fund tracking a particular benchmark. Those measures are not interchangeable. The MSCI Korea and MSCI Taiwan indexes offer a matched starting point because each is designed to represent the large- and mid-cap segments of its national market. Neither represents every listed company.

For a different benchmark, such as a local exchange index or an ETF, check its methodology and holdings separately. A fund’s country label alone does not establish which companies it owns or how much exposure it has to them.

Compare concentration using dated weights

The largest holding matters because a country index can behave partly like a single-company position when one constituent has a very large weight. MSCI’s returned profile observations show substantial exposure to Samsung Electronics in Korea and especially to TSMC in Taiwan:

MSCI Korea Index Samsung Electronics 35.31% in an MSCI profile result displayed on October 11, 2026. A different returned profile variant showed 34.55%; the results do not establish that the variants share an as-of date. Confirm the exact profile and date before using a current weight. MSCI Taiwan Index TSMC 55.16%, with profile data stated as of June 30, 2026. Another returned result showed 54.00%, so verify the current profile and methodology. MSCI Taiwan Index profile

These are not same-day measurements. Do not subtract one from the other as if both weights described a single synchronized market snapshot. Index weights change with share prices, corporate actions, and index reviews; any quoted figure should name the provider and its as-of date.

Look at what the chip companies actually do

TSMC: AI-relevant, but not an AI-only business

TSMC’s 2025 annual report names high-performance computing (HPC) among its end markets, alongside smartphones, the Internet of Things, automotive, and digital consumer electronics. That makes the company relevant to AI-chip exposure, but its reported business spans more than AI. The company is listed in Taiwan as 2330, and its American depositary shares trade on the NYSE as TSM; buying an ADS changes the trading route, not the underlying company exposure. Samsung: a major Korean index holding, with limits to this comparison

Samsung Electronics is the largest constituent in the cited MSCI Korea observation, but the available company evidence here does not establish a comparable breakdown of its AI-related revenue or precisely separate its memory, foundry, and other exposure. Do not treat its index weight as a direct measure of AI-chip revenue, or assume the two companies have equivalent business mixes.

Account for diversification and regional funds

Country indexes include companies outside semiconductors, but the profile information cited here does not provide a complete, comparable sector-weight table. To determine how much of either index is in semiconductors—or in other industries—consult current factsheets for both benchmarks using the same date and sector methodology.

A regional index is not a substitute for a country allocation. MSCI EM Asia lists both TSMC and Samsung among leading constituents, but it also includes other markets. It therefore combines and dilutes country-specific exposure rather than isolating Korea or Taiwan. MSCI EM Asia Index profile

Check the investment route separately

Country exposure can be obtained through different securities and fund structures, each with its own benchmark, holdings, fees, trading currency, and access rules. TSMC’s U.S.-traded ADS is one example of an alternative listing route, not a different company or a diversified Taiwan investment. Taxes, currency conversion, fees, and availability depend on the investor’s location, broker, and product structure; the index weights alone do not determine suitability.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Define the exposure. Decide whether you mean a country index, an exchange benchmark, or a specific fund, then confirm its holdings and methodology.
  2. Use matching benchmarks. MSCI Korea and MSCI Taiwan are a reasonable large- and mid-cap comparison; do not silently substitute a different index for one country.
  3. Align the dates. Retrieve both provider factsheets and record each index weight’s as-of date before comparing constituent concentration.
  4. Separate weight from business exposure. A company’s index share measures its portfolio weight, not the portion of its revenue attributable to AI.
  5. Inspect the rest of the portfolio. Check sector weights and other major holdings to see how much exposure extends beyond the largest chip company.
  6. Evaluate the product and investor context. Check the fund or security structure, currency, fees, tax treatment, and local availability independently.
