There is no universal number of minutes for 7 Days to Die world generation. Random World Generation (RWG) builds a new map before you can play, and the clearest documented variable is map size: larger WorldGenSize values take longer to generate, download and load. The official custom-seed guidance records a player-reported observation that a 10,240-block map takes about 2.5 times as long as an 8,192-block map, but that is not a controlled benchmark or a guarantee for your hardware.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
If you select Navezgane or load a world that already exists, you skip the initial RWG build. Dedicated servers can add another wait because the server must generate the files and then make the world available for clients to download and load.

What “world generation” means in 7 Days to Die
7 Days to Die has two different startup paths that are often described as “world generation,” although they do not do the same work.
Random World Generation (RWG)
RWG takes a seed and generation settings, then constructs a new world. The game must create the terrain and points of interest before the save is ready. That build happens before normal play, so a first launch on a new seed can appear to pause at a generating screen even when the process is still working.

Navezgane and existing worlds
Navezgane is an already authored, static world option rather than a newly assembled random map. Opening Navezgane, or loading an RWG world that has already been generated, removes the initial map-building step. You may still see ordinary save loading, but that is a different operation from creating a completely new map.
Why the distinction matters
Comparing a Navezgane start with a fresh RWG start as though they were the same task produces misleading expectations. The first can be available without a new procedural build; the second must create the world before anyone can enter it.
Why nobody can give you one reliable number of minutes
The official documentation explains which settings affect the work, but it does not publish a hardware-normalized timing table. There is no authoritative list that says, for example, how many minutes an 8,192 map should take on a particular CPU, storage device, amount of RAM, platform or server plan.
Generation time changes with the execution environment as well as the map request. Relevant differences include:
- Map size: a larger width and height means more world data to create.
- CPU and available memory: procedural work and the amount of data held during generation vary by machine.
- Storage: creating, saving and reading a large world stresses the drive differently from a small one.
- Game build: updates can change generation code, assets or default settings.
- Platform: PC and console environments do not have identical hardware or software paths.
- Multiplayer role: a local game may only need to prepare your copy, while a dedicated server must also serve the resulting files to clients.
For those reasons, any exact minute figure without a stated build, map size, hardware and server arrangement is an environment-specific anecdote, not a promise. A long wait by itself does not prove that generation has failed.

How map size changes the wait
WorldGenSize controls the map’s width and height. The server documentation describes supported values in 2,048-block increments and warns that large maps take longer to generate, download and load. The exact choices available can depend on the game build, so use the values shown by your current installation.
| WorldGenSize example | What is established | Practical expectation |
|---|---|---|
| 6,144 | A commonly used size in the documented 2,048-block progression; a build may expose different options. | Smaller than 8,192, so it generally reduces the amount of data to create and move, but no official minute value is published. |
| 8,192 | Used as the comparison point in the official custom-seed guidance. | A useful baseline for comparing your own system with another configuration; the actual duration remains hardware- and build-dependent. |
| 10,240 | The largest example discussed in the timing observation. | The Official Wiki page, updated or crawled in 2026, records a player observation of approximately 2.5 times the generation time of an 8,192 map. This is community-reported, not a controlled developer benchmark. |
| Other supported values | The documented progression uses 2,048-block increments, subject to the options in your build. | Increasing the value increases the work and the eventual download/load burden; no universal conversion from block count to minutes is established. |
The 10,240-to-8,192 comparison should be read as a relative warning, not a calculator. It does not mean every computer will take exactly 2.5 times as long, and it does not establish a 6,144 time by simple arithmetic. Generation does not have a published linear formula that lets you convert one size into a guaranteed duration.
What happens during an RWG startup
The visible wait can contain several stages. Understanding them helps you tell a normal first-run delay from a configuration problem.
- World type is selected. Choosing RWG requests a new procedural world; choosing Navezgane or an existing save follows a different path.
- Generation values are read. The seed, game build and options such as
WorldGenSizedetermine the requested layout. - The map is built. The game or server performs the procedural work and writes the resulting world data.
- The world is made available. In a local game this may lead directly to loading the save. On a dedicated server, the host may need to prepare files for clients.
- Clients download and load. Multiplayer players can therefore wait after the server’s own generation work is complete, especially with a large map.
A dedicated-server “generating” message can consequently represent generation, file preparation, transfer or client-side loading. The documentation’s warning covers all three costs: large maps take longer to generate, download and load.
Local game versus dedicated server
| Setup | Work before play | How to interpret the wait |
|---|---|---|
| New local RWG world | Your machine creates the map and loads the save. | Map size, local CPU, memory, storage and current build dominate the delay. |
| Existing local world | The map has already been generated; the game loads saved data. | You skip the initial RWG build, although ordinary save loading still occurs. |
| Navezgane | An existing static world is opened. | There is no new random-map build for that start. |
| Dedicated server, new RWG world | The server generates the map, stores it and makes it available to connecting players. | Expect generation plus transfer and client loading. A large map amplifies each part of this chain. |
| Dedicated server, existing world | The host and clients load an already generated map. | The first-generation cost is absent, but file transfer and loading can still vary by server and client conditions. |
This is why two players can report very different “generation times” for the same nominal map size: they may be timing different stages on different machines or network arrangements.

Seeds make worlds repeatable, not instantly generated
A fixed seed is useful when you want to recreate a layout. Matching the seed, the game version or build, and the relevant generation values reproduces the same world layout under the same rules. It does not promise the same runtime.
The seed identifies what to build; it does not determine how quickly a particular processor, drive or server can build it. Changing the map size changes the amount of work even if the seed is unchanged. Updating the game can also affect generation behavior, so a seed that matched one build should be compared with the same build when repeatability matters.
How to estimate your own wait responsibly
Because no official minutes table exists, the most useful estimate is a measurement from your own setup. Keep the comparison controlled so that you are not mixing map size, build and server mode.
- Record the build. Note the game version and whether you are testing locally or on a dedicated server.
- Choose one seed and size. Write down the exact seed and
WorldGenSize. Do not compare an 8,192 local run with a 10,240 server run and call the difference a size effect alone. - Time the same boundary. Start the stopwatch when you confirm creation and stop when the world is ready for play. For a server, record both the host’s generation completion and a client’s usable load time.
- Repeat if the result matters. One run can be affected by background tasks or a busy host. A few runs on the same configuration give you a range rather than a misleading single number.
- Change one variable. To study map size, keep the seed, build, machine and mode constant, then test a smaller or larger supported value.
Use your result as a local planning number, not a universal benchmark. If another player quotes a different duration, first check whether the map size, build, platform and server arrangement actually match.
What to do when generation appears stuck
A long pause is not automatically an error, particularly with a large map. Work through the following checks before assuming the save is broken.

Confirm that you requested RWG
Check the selected world type. If you expected a quick Navezgane or existing-world load but selected a new random world, the game is doing the more expensive operation by design.
Check the requested size
Verify WorldGenSize and compare it with a smaller supported value. The documented relationship is directional: larger maps take longer. If a smaller RWG map completes while the large request does not, reducing the size and retrying is a practical diagnostic step, not a guarantee that the larger map is defective.
Allow for server-side preparation
On a dedicated server, generation may be followed by file availability work and client download/load. Make sure you are not judging the server’s generation phase by the time a remote client still needs to finish loading.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check resources and capacity
Confirm that the machine has adequate available storage and memory for the requested map and that the host is not heavily occupied with unrelated work. The documentation does not specify a universal RAM or disk threshold, so treat capacity as a prerequisite to verify rather than a fixed number to meet.
Compare with a controlled retry
Use the same build and a known seed, but select a smaller map. A successful smaller run establishes that the basic RWG path works on that setup. It does not prove the original large request can never finish; it only gives you a useful separation between size-related delay and a broader configuration problem.

Choosing a size for your situation
You want the quickest start
Use Navezgane or an already generated world when a new procedural landscape is not essential. If you want RWG, choose a smaller supported size to reduce generation, transfer and load work.
You want a balance for multiplayer
An 8,192 map is a practical comparison baseline because the published community observation uses it as the reference for 10,240. Measure it on the actual server and client setup before promising players a start time.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You want maximum scale
A 10,240 map provides a larger world request but carries a materially longer wait. The only quantitative comparison available here is the Official Wiki’s player-reported estimate of roughly 2.5 times the 8,192 generation time. Plan for the additional generation, download and loading burden without treating that ratio as a guaranteed schedule.
Questions players commonly ask
Does 10K take longer than 8K?
Yes, larger WorldGenSize requests take longer in general. A 2026-crawled Official Wiki page records a player observation that 10,240 takes approximately 2.5 times as long as 8,192. It is not an official controlled benchmark, so your ratio can differ.
Is Navezgane faster than random generation?
Navezgane avoids the initial RWG build because it is an existing static world. That removes the map-generation step; normal loading still depends on the machine and setup.
How long should a dedicated server take?
There is no reliable universal minute figure. A new RWG server must generate the map and then support file download and client loading, while an existing world skips the first step. State the server’s build, map size and hardware when reporting a time.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a seed guarantee a fast generation?
No. A seed helps reproduce a layout when the build and generation values match, but runtime still depends on map size and the environment executing the work.
When should I assume generation failed?
Do not infer failure from elapsed time alone. First verify world type, size, storage and memory, and whether a dedicated server is preparing files for clients. A smaller controlled RWG retry can help identify whether the requested size is the main cause.
