Samsung’s update support depends on the exact Galaxy model. The Galaxy S24 and S25 series have commitments for seven generations of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates; the Galaxy A27 5G has a commitment of up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and up to six years of security updates. Selected older Galaxy devices were covered by a different, shorter policy. These are separate measures: OS-upgrade generations are not the same as years of security patches.
What Samsung means by Android, One UI and security updates
An Android OS upgrade moves a phone to a newer Android generation, delivered through Samsung’s One UI software. Samsung counts these as generations of OS upgrades. Security updates are a separate commitment: they address security issues and may continue on a different schedule from major OS upgrades. A promise of seven OS-upgrade generations and seven years of security updates therefore describes two support measures, not one combined update count.

Samsung’s figures are announced commitments, not confirmation that every included update has already reached every device. The seven-generation policy applies to the S24 and S25 series named in Samsung’s announcements, while the six-generation figure here is specific to the A27 5G. Don’t assume another Galaxy model has either commitment unless Samsung identifies it.
What the older four-generation policy covered
Samsung announced the up-to-four-generation OS-upgrade and up-to-five-year security-update commitment in 2022 for selected devices. The announcement named Galaxy S21 and S22 models, Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, Galaxy Tab S8, and upcoming select Galaxy A-series devices. Its wording does not make every A-series phone eligible. Security patch frequency is not the same as support length
Within its security-support period, a phone may receive patches monthly, quarterly or biannually, depending on Samsung’s current device scope. Samsung’s security page lists eligible models by cadence and says the lists may change after periodic review. Some carriers may use quarterly delivery for applicable models. A phone being within a stated security-support window therefore does not, by itself, mean it receives a patch every month. Check Samsung’s current Security Updates scope.
Why update dates differ by phone and region
Samsung cautions that update availability and timing can vary by model, market, country, network provider and region. Regional rollout schedules can change after review, and an update may be paused temporarily. The exact variant and carrier channel matter, so a schedule seen for one market should not be treated as a promise for another. How to check your Galaxy phone’s support
- Identify the exact model. Check the model name and number in the phone’s settings or its original purchase documentation; a family name alone may cover multiple variants.
- Check Samsung’s security scope. Find the model on Samsung’s Security Updates page to see whether it is currently listed for monthly, quarterly or biannual updates.
- Check the regional schedule. Use Samsung’s update schedule for the relevant model and region, while allowing for carrier-specific timing or temporary pauses.
- Use a model-specific commitment, not a guessed end date. Samsung’s published policies give durations for named devices, but the cited material does not provide a fixed final patch date for every Galaxy phone and regional variant.
