There is no standard number of years that PlayStation or Nintendo consoles receive games and support. New game releases, online play, store purchases, downloads, software updates, security updates and repairs can each end at different times. The official examples below show why a single lifespan estimate would be misleading.
What does “games and support” include?
A console’s lifespan depends on which service you mean. Developers may stop releasing new games for a system while players can still use its existing library. A digital store can stop selling new purchases even if customers can still download games they already own. Online multiplayer, security updates and repair service have their own schedules, too.

- New games: New releases for the console, from Nintendo, Sony or third-party publishers.
- Online features: Multiplayer, online communication and other network-dependent functions.
- Digital purchases and downloads: The ability to buy games or DLC, and to redownload previously purchased content.
- Updates and hardware support: Game or system updates, security updates, repairs and customer service. These are distinct commitments.
The official notices cited here do not establish a consistent last-new-game date, repair window or customer-service period across PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, so they cannot support a reliable cross-platform “usual years” figure.

The Nintendo wording “for the foreseeable future” does not give a fixed end date or guarantee that downloads and updates will continue indefinitely. Likewise, Sony’s PS3 and PS Vita announcement concerns purchases in the US Store; it does not say that all console functions end in July 2027.

Will older games work on a newer console?
PS4 games on PS5
Sony says the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles. There are exceptions, and Sony cautions that some features may be unavailable or that some games may show errors or behave unexpectedly. Check Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 backward-compatibility information for details.
Switch games on Switch 2
Nintendo says Switch 2 plays Switch 2 games and compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Some original Switch titles may not be supported or may not be fully compatible because the hardware differs. Consult Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information for current details.

Backward compatibility can make an existing library useful on a newer console, but it does not mean every game works perfectly or that the older console will continue receiving new releases.

On July 1, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Sid Shuman announced that “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” The announcement says new games will be available digitally after the transition; games released or scheduled for release before January 2028 in disc format are unaffected. This is a change to physical-disc production, not an end to PlayStation game development, digital releases, online support or console support. (PlayStation.Blog, July 1, 2026)

How to judge support for a console you own
- Identify the service you need. Check whether you mean upcoming games, multiplayer, new store purchases, redownloading purchases, updates, security support or repairs.
- Look for a notice covering that exact service and console. A store-closure notice does not establish when online play, downloads or single-player games will stop working.
- Check the region and model. For example, Sony’s security-update periods are UK commitments tied to listed models, while its PS3 and Vita Store notice concerns the US.
- Check backward compatibility separately. If you plan to move to a newer console, consult its current compatibility information for the specific games you care about.
Service dates and compatibility information can change. For a decision that depends on a particular game, online feature or device model, verify the manufacturer’s current notice rather than assuming every kind of support shares one end date.
