How Long Do iPhones Get Software Updates—and When Should You Upgrade?

Apple does not guarantee one support term for every iPhone. Check your model’s current update status, battery health, reliability, and app needs before deciding to keep, repair, or upgrade.

As of October 13, 2026, Apple’s current compatibility list for iOS 27 reaches back to iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation). That is a snapshot of the current release, not a promise that every iPhone receives updates for a set number of years. Check your model’s available updates and condition, then decide whether to keep it, repair it, or upgrade based on what you need—not its age alone.

How long do iPhones get software updates?

Apple does not publish one universal support term that guarantees every iPhone a fixed number of years of software updates. The practical answer depends on the model and on what you mean by “updates”: a new major iOS version with feature changes, or a later security update that may still be offered for an older version.

Current major iOS compatibility

As of October 13, 2026, iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and later, as well as iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). Apple’s list also includes newer iPhone models. If your phone is on that list, it can run the current major iOS release; if it is not, it cannot install iOS 27. Compatibility lists can change with future major releases, so treat this as a dated status check rather than a forecast.

To check your own phone, open Settings > General > Software Update. That screen shows the installed iOS version and whether an update is available for your model. Apple recommends keeping software current, and its September 15, 2026 update guide describes doing so as one of the most important ways to maintain an Apple product’s security.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Compatibility answers whether a model can run a major release; it does not by itself tell you whether your particular phone has installed the latest update available to it. The Software Update screen is the useful next check. If a model is outside the iOS 27 list, it cannot move to that major version, but an update for an earlier software branch may still be offered.

What Apple’s history can—and cannot—tell you

Apple’s June 2024 Longevity, by Design report describes feature operating-system updates reaching as far back as six years from a device’s introduction. That is an observation about Apple’s history, not a guaranteed six-year term for every iPhone. Individual support periods can differ, and a historical pattern does not establish when a particular model will stop receiving a new iOS version.

Apple also says it strives to provide critical security updates after a product can no longer run the newest operating system. The company’s report gives an example: iPhone 6s, introduced in 2015, received an iOS 15 update in March 2024. This demonstrates that security support can continue on an older software branch; it does not mean every older iPhone will receive fixes for a known number of years.

Major iOS updates and security updates are not the same

A major iOS release brings the current software version and its feature changes to compatible devices. Security updates address vulnerabilities and may be issued for the newest iOS or, in some cases, an older branch. A phone outside the current major-version compatibility list may therefore still receive a security fix, but that possibility should not be mistaken for full feature support or an ongoing commitment to maintain every older version.

Apple’s September 28, 2026 iOS 26.7.1 security bulletin is a useful example. While iOS 27 was current, the bulletin listed iPhone 11 and later and described a CoreGraphics issue. Apple said it was aware of a report that the issue may have been exploited against specific targeted individuals on versions before iOS 27. This is a dated example of a security update, not a promise that Apple will continue supporting the iOS 26 branch or any other branch on a fixed schedule.

The distinction matters when deciding whether an older phone is still suitable. An available security update is valuable, but it does not by itself restore access to features in a newer iOS release. Likewise, missing a major update is not automatically a reason to replace a phone if it remains secure enough for your needs, dependable, and compatible with the apps and functions you rely on.

In practical terms, do not treat “not on the newest iOS” and “receives no updates at all” as interchangeable statements. Check for updates on the device, install any update it offers if you want to keep it current, and consider the phone’s limits separately: the newest features may be unavailable even when an older-branch security update exists. Apple’s examples show that older-branch fixes can happen, but they do not establish a schedule or guarantee for a specific model.

Check your iPhone’s update and battery status

1. See what software your model can install

  1. Open Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Note the installed iOS version and whether the phone offers an update.
  3. Install available updates if you want to keep the phone current. Apple also provides automatic update settings in this area.

The phone’s update screen is the direct check for an update available to that device. The iOS 27 compatibility list gives broader context about the current major release, but it cannot tell you whether an update is pending for your individual phone. If you prefer not to check manually each time, review the automatic update options in Software Update.

2. Check battery health and performance

Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple says this area reports maximum capacity and peak performance capability. Maximum capacity compares the battery’s current capacity with when it was new; peak performance information helps explain whether battery condition is affecting the phone’s ability to deliver performance.

Apple’s battery design targets differ by model generation. Under ideal conditions, batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles. iPhone 15 batteries are designed to retain 80% after 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. These are design specifications, not a prediction of an individual phone’s battery health or a replacement threshold. Actual results depend on use and charging.

A cycle is a complete charge cycle, and the figures are not a timetable saying when a phone must be serviced. A particular battery may perform differently depending on its use and charging conditions. Use the Battery Health screen to understand your phone’s reported condition, then consider whether that condition is causing a practical problem such as inadequate battery life or performance. The percentage alone does not decide whether repair or replacement is the better choice.

Should you keep, repair, or upgrade?

Use three questions rather than a simple age cutoff: Can the phone install the updates available to it? Does it reliably handle the tasks and apps you need? Is its main problem a fault that can be repaired economically? The answers point toward keeping it, repairing it, or replacing it.

Keep it if it still does the job

  • Your model can install the updates available for it, and you are comfortable with its current software support.
  • The phone is dependable for your daily use.
  • Your important apps, features, and workflows continue to work acceptably.

There is no software-age rule requiring you to replace an iPhone that remains useful. Reassess if support status changes or if an app, feature, or reliability problem becomes important to you. If the phone still meets your needs, its age by itself is not a reason to buy a replacement.

Repair it if one fixable problem is driving the decision

If the phone otherwise meets your needs and battery life is the main issue, consider battery service before replacing the whole device. Apple says a significantly degraded battery can be replaced by an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The available information establishes that service option but not a current price for your region; check the provider’s quote and compare it with the phone’s expected remaining usefulness.

Do not use a single battery-health percentage or the cycle design target as an automatic instruction to buy a new phone. Consider whether the battery is causing a real limitation, what service costs where you live, and whether the device’s software support and reliability still suit you. A battery repair addresses the battery; it does not add compatibility with a newer major iOS release, so consider software status as well as battery condition.

  • Product may come in generic Box.

When comparing repair with replacement, use the actual local service quote and the total cost of the replacement option you are considering. Also weigh how long you expect to use each device, whether the current phone is reliable aside from its battery, and whether it has enough storage and the features you need. No one battery percentage or age can settle that comparison for everyone.

Upgrade when support or condition creates a meaningful problem

An upgrade makes more sense when the phone cannot run the current major iOS version and the resulting limitations matter to you; essential apps or workflows no longer work acceptably; the device is unreliable; or repair cost outweighs the value you expect from keeping it. This is a practical decision framework, not an official Apple replacement rule.

If you are weighing a battery repair against a replacement phone, compare the total cost and likely usable life of each choice. Include current software compatibility, battery condition, reliability, the features you need, and your data and storage needs. A newer phone is not automatically the better value if your current model remains dependable and a repair would address the problem.

What to do if your iPhone no longer gets the newest iOS

  1. Confirm the model’s status. Check Settings > General > Software Update and compare the model with Apple’s current compatibility list.
  2. Install any update offered. A phone that cannot run the newest major version may still have an update available for its installed software branch.
  3. Check whether the limitation affects you. Identify any apps, features, or work tasks that no longer function as you need them to. Do not assume that losing a new feature means the phone has stopped working.
  4. Assess reliability and repair needs. Review battery health and any other faults separately from software age. If a repair addresses the main issue, compare the service cost with the time you expect to keep using the device.
  5. Choose based on the remaining gap. Keep the phone if it stays dependable and meets your needs; repair it if a fix makes sense; upgrade if unsupported software, broken workflows, or reliability makes continued use impractical.

Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18 in more than 65 countries and regions. That establishes a current replacement generation, but it does not determine whether upgrading is worthwhile for a particular owner. Availability, configuration, and price depend on location and retailer.

If you do decide to replace the phone, compare the model and configuration that fit your needs rather than assuming that the newest generation is necessary. For example, Apple’s September 2026 announcement makes iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max current replacement options, but it does not establish a price, local stock, seller, or the best configuration for you. Check those details in your region before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my iPhone keep getting iOS updates?

There is no fixed number Apple guarantees for every model. Apple’s June 2024 Longevity, by Design report describes feature OS updates reaching as far back as six years from a device’s introduction, but that is historical experience, not a promise for an individual iPhone. Check your model’s current compatibility and Software Update screen.

Is my iPhone too old to update?

Check Settings > General > Software Update to see what update is available to your phone, then compare the model with Apple’s current compatibility list. As of October 13, 2026, iOS 27 compatibility reaches back to iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation). A model outside that list cannot install iOS 27, although an update for an older software branch may still be available.

Will my iPhone still get security updates if it cannot install the newest iOS?

Sometimes. Apple says it strives to provide critical security updates after a product can no longer run the newest OS; its examples include an iOS 15 update for iPhone 6s in March 2024 and iOS 26.7.1 in September 2026 while iOS 27 was current. Those examples do not guarantee continued security updates for every older model or software branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I replace my iPhone battery or buy a new phone?

If the phone otherwise meets your needs and a degraded battery is the main problem, ask Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for a battery-service quote. Compare that local cost with a replacement’s total cost and likely usable life, while also considering software compatibility, reliability, needed features, and storage. Apple’s battery cycle specifications are design targets, not automatic replacement thresholds.

The Bottom Line

Apple does not guarantee one update lifespan for every iPhone. As of October 13, 2026, iOS 27 compatibility reaches back to iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation), while older devices may sometimes receive separate security updates. Check Software Update and Battery Health, then keep the phone if it is dependable, repair it if a fix makes financial sense, or upgrade when unsupported software or poor reliability creates a real problem.
