He also says the timing varies, so the line describes a usual pattern—not a fixed lifespan for every individual.
What lifespan does Final Fantasy IX give its Black Mages?
In a Black Mage Village conversation, No. 288 says: “It varies a little, but most of us stop moving one year after production.” The line appears in a published transcription of the game’s script, hosted by GameFAQs. It is fictional dialogue from a character describing what he has observed, not a scientific statistic or an externally verified biological rule.

The wording matters: “most” and “varies” leave room for individual differences. The game gives a rough usual timeframe, not an exact expiration date that applies to every Black Mage.

No exact lifespan for Vivi is stated in the conversation. No. 288 describes Vivi as an earlier prototype and says Kuja told him that the prototype would last longer. That establishes a possible difference, but it does not say how long Vivi will live or whether he follows a particular schedule.

Why does the scene make the timeframe feel uncertain?
No. 288 says he had suspected their lives were limited since the first Black Mage stopped moving. His account is shaped by fear and reflection on the meaning of life with friends. The scene reveals the characters’ understanding of their mortality; it does not provide a technical explanation for why the manufactured mages stop moving.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this apply to every Black Mage in Final Fantasy?
No. The one-year account belongs to the manufactured beings in Final Fantasy IX. “Black Mage” has different meanings across the series. For example, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV job guide describes Black Mage as a job for adventurers who wield black magic. It does not give a lifespan for that job, and the IX village lore should not be applied to it or generalized across the franchise.
