There is no single support lifespan for all Android phones, and Apple does not promise one fixed number of years for every iPhone in the cited documentation. The clearest current examples are model-specific: Google promises seven years of updates for Pixel 8 and later, while Samsung specifies seven years of security updates for the Galaxy S24 series. Apple’s release notices show that some older iPhones still receive security fixes, but they do not establish a guaranteed duration for every model.
What the published support commitments say
| Phone or series | Security updates | Major OS upgrades | When the period starts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of updates, including security updates, according to Google’s policy; measured from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. Google Pixel update policy | Included in Google’s updates commitment; Google’s October 4, 2023 announcement specifically described seven years of software support for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, including the latest Android OS. Google announcement | First US Google Store availability |
| Samsung Galaxy S24 series | Seven years. Samsung Electronics Sustainability Report 2024 | Seven generations of OS upgrades | Not stated in the cited report |
| Samsung Galaxy S26+ | Seven years. Samsung Galaxy S26+ Product Environmental Report | Seven generations of OS upgrades | Global launch date |
| Apple iPhones | No universal duration is stated in the cited Apple documentation. Apple’s May 11, 2026 release notice lists iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X for iOS 16.7.16. Apple iOS 16.7.16 notice | No universal duration is stated in the cited documentation | Not stated as a fixed support-window start point |
These figures are commitments for the named models or series, not an Android-wide guarantee. Google’s Pixel policy specifies availability on the Google Store in the US; Samsung’s Galaxy S26+ report measures from global launch. Check regional model terms before relying on a particular commitment.

Security updates are not the same as major OS upgrades
A security patch fixes known vulnerabilities. A major OS upgrade moves the phone to a newer Android or iOS version, while feature updates may add or change capabilities. A manufacturer may promise all of these, or define them separately, so compare each term rather than treating “years of support” as a complete description.
Apple’s older-version releases illustrate why the distinction matters: a security fix can arrive for an older iOS line rather than only through the newest major version. Apple’s security releases page lists published releases, but a particular release notice applies to its listed models and version, not to an announced future lifespan for every iPhone. Why Android support varies by phone
Android is used by manufacturers with different update policies. The Pixel 8-and-later commitment and Samsung’s commitments for the Galaxy S24 series and S26+ are examples for specific devices; they should not be generalized to every Android phone or every Samsung model.
Update timing can also differ from the length of the commitment. Google says Pixel OTA updates begin on the same day the monthly Pixel Update Bulletin is released. That describes Google’s Pixel update channel, not a guarantee that every Android manufacturer, carrier, or model will deliver a patch on the same day. Pixel Update Bulletins

How to check support for a phone you own or plan to buy
- Identify the exact model and region. A series name alone may cover different models or regional variants. Find the manufacturer’s policy for the specific device and note which markets it applies to.
- Compare the support terms. Check the promised security-update duration, the number of major OS upgrades if stated, and the date from which the support clock runs. A seven-year promise from first availability is not necessarily the same calendar end date as one measured from launch.
- Check whether it is receiving patches now. On a Pixel, open Settings > About phone > Android version to view the Android version and security update level; Google’s support page explains these fields. Google Pixel support
- For iPhone, check Apple’s release notice. Use Apple’s security releases list, then confirm whether your exact iPhone appears in the notice for the update in question. For example, Apple’s September 28, 2026 iOS 26.7.1 notice lists iPhone 11 and later; that eligible-device list applies to that release and does not promise future support. Apple iOS 26.7.1 notice
- Install available updates. Keep the operating system current and apply security updates offered for your device.
What happens when updates stop?
A phone may continue to function after its manufacturer stops providing security updates, but the cited policies do not establish that an unsupported phone is safe for sensitive use. Support duration is one factor in how long a device remains practical; it does not guarantee perfect security while updates are available or determine whether the phone still meets your needs.
