There is no fixed age at which a discontinued smartwatch becomes unsafe. Sales ending does not necessarily stop the watch from working, but software security support, phone and app compatibility, battery condition, and repair availability each follow a different timeline. You can keep using a watch that still functions, but weigh its update status and physical condition against what you use it for—especially payments, account access, location, and health data.
What “discontinued” means for a smartwatch
A manufacturer stopping sales does not, by itself, mean a watch has stopped working or has reached a safety deadline. Several separate kinds of support can end at different times:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Sales: the maker no longer sells the model.
- Operating-system and security updates: the watch may stop receiving new features, fixes, or patches.
- Phone and companion-app compatibility: a watch may still power on but stop pairing or syncing as phones and apps change. Google notes that some Fitbit devices may eventually lose Fitbit app support and pairing (Google Fitbit support).
- Service and parts: repairs may become unavailable or uneconomical even while the watch still runs.
- Battery and hardware condition: these age independently of software support.
Apple likewise treats operating-system compatibility and product service status as separate matters (Apple watchOS compatibility; Apple service and obsolete-product policy).
What changes when security updates stop?
An unsupported watch may continue to do its basic job, but it will not receive the maker’s future fixes for newly discovered software or security problems. Motorola’s end-of-life notice for the Moto 360 says the watch “will continue to function” but will no longer receive improvements or official support for future software or security issues (Moto 360 end-of-life notice). That statement applies to that model’s end-of-life status; it is not a guarantee about every discontinued watch.

No cited evidence establishes a universal safe grace period after updates end, or a smartwatch-specific incident rate that would let you calculate the risk for an individual device. Continuing to use an unsupported watch is therefore a risk decision, not a declaration that it is either categorically safe or unusable.
Lower-risk use
If the watch is physically intact, its battery behaves normally, and it still pairs and syncs, you may choose to keep it for functions that do not depend on sensitive data. Keep the paired phone and the watch’s available software current, remove apps and accounts you no longer need, and limit stored personal information. These steps can reduce exposure but cannot replace vendor security fixes.

Use more caution with sensitive functions
Consider disabling payments and unnecessary network-connected apps on a watch that no longer gets security updates. Avoid relying on it for sensitive logins or other high-consequence tasks. The more payment, account, location, and health information you use on the device, the more important its update status is to your decision.

When the battery or hardware calls for service
Battery condition is a separate question from whether software support has ended. Rechargeable batteries have limited lifespans; check the watch’s battery-health screen, if it has one, and pay attention to service warnings. A declining runtime can make a watch inconvenient, but a warning that service is needed or signs of physical damage warrant assessment by a qualified provider.

- 【Five-in-one watch screwdriver】-- Five types of screwdriver bits are suitable for many situations: watch battery fixing screws, watch case screws, watchband screws, and can also be used for glasses screws. The cover at the end of the screwdriver can be opened, and the inside is hollow for storing other screwdriver bits.
- 【The purpose of the watch case holder】-- The watch case holder can be used with other tools in the kit to help fix the watch. Moreover, it is more effective in avoiding the risk of sliding and scratching the watch after reducing the diameter of the spring. It is suitable for watches of various sizes, and can be used for watches with a diameter of up to 50mm.
- 【Picture Operation Manual】-- The kit comes with a user manual(in English). The detailed pictures explain the correct usage method to you, avoid damaging your watch by wrong operation, and help you solve the watch problem at home.
- Stop wearing or charging the watch pending assessment if it becomes unusually hot, appears swollen or deformed, leaks, or its case or display lifts or is damaged.
- Do not attempt a model-agnostic battery replacement: parts and service procedures depend on the exact device.
- Apple says battery capacity is measured relative to when the battery was new and that rechargeable batteries eventually need replacement. It directs users who see a “Battery Needs Service” message or suspect replacement is needed to Apple Support (Apple Watch battery service information; Apple battery and service guidance).
Check the exact watch before deciding
- Identify the device and its software. Record the manufacturer, exact model, watch OS version or build, and the paired phone model and OS version.
- Find the model-specific update commitment. Check the maker’s official update or support page for the last update or any guaranteed support period. Google lists Pixel Watch update commitments by device (Google Pixel Watch update policy). Samsung update notices give details by model and warn that availability can vary by country and carrier (Samsung security update scope).
- Test the connection and features you actually need. Confirm that the watch still pairs, syncs, and supports the apps and phone OS you use. Apple says Software Update shows the newest watchOS version available when a model cannot use the latest release (Update Apple Watch). Legacy Fitbit devices may eventually lose app pairing, as noted in Google’s Fitbit support guidance (Google Fitbit support).
- Check battery condition and physical integrity. Review battery-health information and service alerts, and inspect the case and display. Treat suspected battery damage as a service issue rather than a normal aging inconvenience.
- Check service and parts for your region. Ask the manufacturer or an authorized provider what repair is available and compare its cost with replacement. Apple’s service periods and product classifications are its own policy; they do not define support for other brands (Apple service and obsolete-product policy).
Published support and lifespan figures—and what they cover
| Figure | What it applies to | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 2–5 years | The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2024 estimate of smartwatch lifetime, varying by brand, model, or usage (JRC study). | It is not an expiration date, a safety cutoff, or a promised security-support period. |
| At least 2 years after last sale | Google’s Fitbit security-update minimum, counted from when the applicable device was last sold on Fitbit.com or the Google Store (Google Fitbit security-update policy). | It does not guarantee continued app compatibility or define the device’s physical lifespan. |
| At least 3 years after product launch | Samsung’s 2021 statement for the software support of Tizen-based Galaxy smartwatches (Samsung 2021 statement). | It is a historical commitment for that product generation, not a current rule for every Galaxy Watch. |
| At least 5 years, potentially up to 7 subject to law and parts | Apple’s service-and-parts policy, measured from the last date Apple distributed a product for sale. Apple classifies products as vintage after five years and obsolete after seven; hardware service is discontinued for obsolete products (Apple service and obsolete-product policy). | It is a service policy, not an operating-system or security-update promise. |
When to restrict use, repair, or retire the watch
- Keep it for limited use if it remains physically sound, its battery behaves normally, and it still connects—but understand that security fixes may have ended. Keep sensitive functions and stored data to a minimum.
- Plan to replace or restrict it if security updates have stopped and you use it for payments, account access, or other sensitive tasks. There is no established universal period for safely extending use after support ends.
- Seek qualified service if a battery warning appears, runtime becomes unreliable, or the device shows heat, swelling, leakage, or case/display damage.
- Retire it for practical reasons if it no longer pairs, its companion app has ended support, required features fail, or necessary parts and service are unavailable. A device that powers on is not necessarily one that still meets your needs.
