Which time limit applies?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gives two separate limits for prepared formula: use it within two hours of preparation and within one hour from when feeding begins. The one-hour feeding limit is not extra time added after the two-hour preparation limit. Follow the clock that applies to the bottle’s current situation.

What to do with an untouched bottle
If you have prepared formula but feeding will not begin within two hours, put the bottle in the refrigerator immediately. CDC says to use refrigerated prepared formula within 24 hours. If you cannot remember how long it has been refrigerated, do not feed it to the baby.

Refrigeration is an option only for formula that has not been used for a feeding. Once feeding begins, the remaining formula should be discarded rather than refrigerated for later.
Why leftovers after a feeding must be discarded
Formula in a bottle the baby has fed from can mix with saliva, allowing bacteria or germs to grow. Discard what remains after the feeding; do not keep it for another meal. CDC’s Cronobacter prevention guidance also advises discarding leftover formula after feeding.

Extra precautions for some babies
Powdered infant formula is not sterile and can contain germs such as Cronobacter. CDC advises extra precautions for babies younger than two months, born prematurely, or with weakened immune systems. For these infants, CDC describes mixing powdered formula with very hot water and cooling it before feeding; the appropriate preparation approach can depend on the baby’s circumstances and water safety. Check the current CDC preparation guidance and ask the baby’s health professional about individual circumstances.

- Follow the formula container’s mixing directions and measure the exact amount of water listed.
- Formula does not need to be warmed. If you choose to warm it, do not use a microwave: it can heat unevenly and create hot spots. CDC recommends warm running water for warming.
- A bottle type or warmer does not extend either time limit.
If there is no working refrigerator during a power outage or another emergency, CDC says to prepare fresh formula for each feeding. Its emergency infant-feeding guidance reiterates the two-hour preparation limit and one-hour limit after feeding begins.

This guidance applies to prepared infant formula. It is not a substitute for the label instructions for unopened ready-to-feed products or for guidance about expressed breast milk.
