AI is already being used in logistics to plan warehouse and delivery routes, forecast demand, monitor warehouse operations, read railcar codes, and automate administrative work. These deployments solve different operational problems; they are not evidence of one general-purpose logistics system or of a sector-wide performance gain.

What logistics tasks are AI being used for?

The ten examples below range from systems described by their vendors to summaries in deployment directories. The source and evidence limits are identified alongside each case: vendor-reported outcomes are not independent audits, and directory summaries are not substitutes for the underlying reports.

Deployment and task What the system does Reported scope and evidence
FM Logistic and Google Cloud — warehouse picking routes in Poland Generates warehouse picking routes using a quick filtering stage followed by more precise distance simulation, with route construction that can adapt to the task. Google Cloud says the Poland pilot is running in production. FM Logistic evaluated generated algorithms using a representative set of 60 tours, described as more than one hour of workforce data, at a facility with more than 17,700 picking locations. The reviewed account gives no measured productivity percentage.
PepsiCo and Adiona — distribution route optimization Builds fleet route plans from SAP data, EDI feeds, and CSV exports without requiring a replacement of existing systems. Adiona’s 2026 case study reports that its early deployment reduced fleet distance travelled by 19%. It says plans could be produced within four to eight weeks of initial data handover. The case also describes a subsequent program intended to test integration at PepsiCo scale; the early result should not be read as proof of that later program’s outcome.
CJ Logistics and OneTrack — warehouse network operations Connects operational data and computer-vision sensor evidence to dashboards and agents for warehouse operations. OneTrack’s undated case page, reviewed in 2026, reports 18% more units per hour and 45% less clock-in-to-clock-out gap time across more than 40 warehouses. These are vendor-reported case-study results.
ID Logistics and OneTrack — warehouse safety monitoring Uses computer-vision-based operational visibility and coaching to monitor safety-related activity. OneTrack reports an 84% reduction in safety incidents at ID Logistics. This is the vendor’s reported result, not an independently established effect.
States Logistics and OneTrack — warehouse safety monitoring Uses warehouse operational visibility to support safety monitoring and investigations. OneTrack reports safety incidents down 72% and investigations 90% faster at States Logistics. These are vendor case-study claims.
Rossmann and Graphmasters — German regional warehouse route planning Uses traffic data for real-time predictions and route forecasting tied to order volumes. A Straits Institute deployment-index entry dated June 16, 2025, says nearly every regional warehouse Rossmann operates in Germany adopted route-planning logistics built with Graphmasters on its Nunav platform. The index summary does not establish a performance result.
Terminal 6, Santa Fe — railcar identification Deep-learning software from AllRead reads railcar codes as wagons arrive, replacing manual registration. The Straits Institute index describes the system in the context of the terminal’s daily rail and cargo operations and dates its entry May 8, 2025. This is an index summary, not a separately verified outcome report.
UPS — ORION route optimization Uses route optimization for delivery operations. The AI for Supply Chain logistics directory lists ORION deployment cases and points to reporting about annual savings and route mileage. The directory’s underlying sources were not reviewed here, so no precise savings or mileage figure is included.
PSA International — reducing empty truck trips at Singapore ports Applies AI route optimization to reduce empty truck movements. The AI for Supply Chain directory reports a decline in empty trips from about 35% to 17–18%. The directory’s underlying cited source was not reviewed, so treat this as a directory-attributed figure rather than a verified PSA result.
DHL — demand forecasting Uses AI for demand forecasting. The AI for Supply Chain directory lists a reported 30–40% reduction in forecast error. Its underlying linked source was not reviewed, so the figure is directory-attributed rather than independently verified here.

What kinds of logistics problems do these deployments address?

Predicting and planning

Route optimization and demand forecasting turn inputs such as traffic, orders, locations, and fleet constraints into plans or predictions. Those outputs can help operators decide where vehicles should go or anticipate demand, but a better plan is useful only if it fits the actual operating constraints and can be acted on in time.

Identifying and monitoring

Computer vision and deep learning can convert visual activity into operational signals: for example, identifying a railcar code or surfacing warehouse activity for monitoring. These systems address recognition and visibility problems; they do not automatically make the operational decision that follows.

Automating administrative work

Logistics also involves paperwork and coordination, not just moving goods. The AI for Supply Chain directory lists Customs Assured as automating customs declarations, but the underlying source was not reviewed here, so the directory entry does not support a detailed outcome claim.

What do these cases show about data and implementation?

Successful deployment depends on fitting a system into the information and decisions a logistics operation already uses. Relevant inputs may sit across planning software, transaction feeds, spreadsheets, sensor evidence, maps, and local operating rules. A model or optimization engine cannot produce a dependable operational result if those inputs are incomplete, stale, inconsistent, or disconnected from the people who must use its output.

Integration does not necessarily mean replacing core systems. The practical question is whether a deployment can ingest the available data, cope with its quality and format, and return recommendations in a workflow that operators can understand and act on. Data access, exception handling, and feedback from operators are part of the implementation, not work to postpone until after choosing an algorithm.

Evaluation should also reflect the operation’s actual variability. A useful test set represents different routes, shifts, facilities, traffic conditions, order patterns, and exceptions—not only the easiest cases. For a planning system, compare recommendations with a baseline under equivalent conditions and track whether the plan was feasible and followed. For a monitoring or recognition system, measure errors and missed events as well as the speed or visibility it adds.

How can you tell a pilot from a scaled deployment?

A pilot demonstrates that a system can work within a defined test or operating environment. Production status indicates that it has entered live use, but does not by itself show that it has been adopted across every facility, integrated into every workflow, or delivered a lasting financial return. Scale requires additional evidence about coverage, system reliability, human oversight, and whether performance holds as sites and conditions change.

When reading a deployment claim, look for the specific site or network covered, the time period, the baseline, the exact metric, and who calculated it. A percentage without those details is difficult to compare with another operation. For example, reductions in distance, incident counts, forecast error, and elapsed investigation time describe different outcomes and cannot be ranked as if they measured the same thing.

What can these examples say about logistics AI overall?

They demonstrate that AI has practical, varied uses across logistics, from warehouse decisions to transport planning and operational identification. They do not establish a broadly applicable, independently verified statistic for AI’s overall impact on logistics. The directory-listed claims should be checked against their original reporting before being treated as confirmed results, and vendor case-study figures should remain attributed to the vendors that published them.

These examples also do not, on their own, answer every common question about the field. The cases summarized here do not provide enough evidence to generalize about AI’s effect on freight pricing or carrier selection, last-mile delivery, or how 3PLs compete. For a specific deployment, the more useful question is whether its task, data, operating environment, integration requirements, maturity, and measurement method match the problem at hand.
