The first shift is measured clearly in industry revenue data; the second offers new formats and possibilities, but current evidence does not establish that livestreams reliably increase artists’ income or replace in-person concerts.
Two kinds of music streaming—and two different changes
On-demand recorded-music streaming lets listeners play released tracks from a catalog, usually through a subscription or an ad-supported service. Its revenue is counted as recorded-music revenue. Livestreaming, by contrast, is a performance transmitted as video in real time. It can be free, sponsored or ticketed, and its income may come from different sources. A recorded song played on demand and a concert watched live are not the same product, audience behavior or revenue measure.
Keeping that distinction clear matters: the headline figures for streaming’s share of the music business describe recorded music, not livestream concerts, live-event revenue or total artist earnings.

The global shift in the numbers
IFPI’s Global Music Report 2025 reported that global recorded-music trade revenues reached US$29.6 billion in 2024, up 4.8% from 2023. Streaming generated US$20.4 billion, equal to 69.0% of those global recorded-music revenues. Within streaming, paid subscription revenue grew 9.5% in 2024, while ad-supported streaming formats grew 1.2%.
IFPI also reported 752 million users of paid subscription accounts globally at the end of 2024. These figures show the scale of streaming as a recorded-music format; they do not show how much an individual artist earns, nor do they measure concert livestreams.

What the change means for listening
Streaming services make large catalogs available on demand, so access is no longer tied to buying each album or track separately. Services may also offer features such as higher-quality audio, video and synced lyrics. In its 2022 music and streaming market study, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) described the effect of this abundance on listening: “Streaming has changed not only how we listen to music but what we listen to because for the first time all music, both old and new, is readily available in one place at no additional cost.” That is the CMA’s observation in its UK market analysis, not a claim that every listener uses streaming in the same way.
The CMA’s historical revenue comparison is specific to the UK and adjusted for inflation: UK recorded-music revenue rose from £0.8 billion in 2015 to £1.1 billion in 2021, still below its £1.9 billion peak in 2001. Those figures should not be treated as a global trend or as evidence about livestream revenue.

Discovery increasingly happens across music and social-video platforms
Listeners can encounter music outside a dedicated audio service, including through social-video clips and creator posts. That can make discovery more participatory: a track may be encountered as part of a short video, a challenge or a creator’s post before a listener seeks it out elsewhere. It also means discovery is shaped by platform formats and recommendation systems as well as by radio, press, playlists and word of mouth.
TikTok’s 2025 announcement of a Music Impact Report, commissioned with Luminate and analyzing 2024 activity, said artists with TikTok engagement more correlated with streaming volumes experienced higher on-demand streaming growth over the year. This is an association reported in a platform-commissioned analysis; it does not establish that TikTok engagement alone caused the growth. Exposure on a platform may help some songs travel, but no industry-wide result guarantees the same reach or income for every artist.

Livestream concerts add a performance and fan-contact format
What live video can offer
A livestream can let an artist perform for people who are far away, unable to attend a venue or looking for a more direct online interaction. Depending on the event, viewers may watch together, respond in chat or attend through a ticketed stream. For artists and teams, a live video can also provide a way to maintain contact between in-person shows or reach an online community across borders.
During the pandemic period, when venues were shut and audiences could not gather, artists and organizers used ticketed events, sponsored shows and different production platforms to stage online performances. TIME’s 2021 reporting described artists considering how to retain online communities as live shows returned. Those accounts document formats and practices at that time; they do not quantify current market size or prove that livestreaming increases later ticket sales.

A venue performance and a livestream offer different experiences. In-person shows bring a shared physical setting; a stream can remove travel and venue barriers but depends on a connection, screen and production setup. A livestream may be a one-time event, while recorded releases remain available on demand. The formats can complement each other, but the available figures do not establish that livestreams replace in-person concerts or reliably boost attendance at them.

- Critically acclaimed sonic performance praised by top audio engineers and pro audio reviewers

- 90 degree swiveling earcups for easy, one ear monitoring, and professional grade earpad and headband material delivers more durability and comfort
There is also no like-for-like evidence here comparing audience reach, production cost, artist receipts or repeat viewing across audio streaming, livestream concerts and venue shows. A stream count, a livestream ticket sale and a later concert ticket sale describe different outcomes and should not be presented as interchangeable measures.

Recorded-music platforms may also help listeners find in-person concerts. In a 2026 Loud & Clear article, Spotify said its service had driven $1 billion in gross concert ticket sales for artists by the first half of 2025. This is Spotify’s own reported attribution for ticket sales across its service. It is not livestream-concert revenue, and it does not isolate a causal effect of livestreaming.

The example illustrates a possible connection between listening and live events, but it should not be read as an estimate of what artists generally earn from streaming or as proof that online performances produce ticket sales.
What the industry shift means for artists—and what it cannot promise
At an industry level, recorded-music streaming is now the dominant revenue format, while live video has expanded the ways artists can perform and maintain audience contact. These changes create more routes for listeners to discover music and for artists to present it, but the opportunities are not evenly distributed by default. Aggregate market growth does not tell an artist how many listeners they will reach, how much a stream will pay them or whether an online audience will buy a ticket.
The quantitative evidence is strongest for recorded music. The sources cited here do not provide recent independent figures isolating livestream concerts’ effect on artist income, audience size or in-person ticket sales. Treat particular livestream success stories and platform-reported downstream benefits as attributed examples, not universal outcomes.
A related format: always-on YouTube music channels
For artists or channel operators who want uploaded videos to play continuously, rather than broadcast a camera-based concert, StreamNeo is a cloud service that keeps a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live; it loops the videos from the cloud, so a computer and home connection do not have to stay on. This is a separate use of recorded video, not a substitute for performing live to camera.
StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. It plays uploaded videos at the quality they were made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Learn more at StreamNeo or start a free day.
