LIV Golf has been described as using individualized player participation contracts; the PGA TOUR frames participation through membership and season-specific regulations. That difference affects how event duties, commercial obligations and player status are documented. LIV’s 2026 roster process also makes standings relevant to contract extensions and release, while the available sources do not establish a directly comparable PGA TOUR renewal system.
How the agreements are structured
A LIV arrangement is a private participation agreement whose terms may differ by player and may involve the league, a team operator or both. A 2022 GOLF.com report reviewing contracts disclosed during litigation described provisions covering event participation, team apparel, promotional work, media approvals and recruitment. Those examples show what appeared in contracts at that time; they do not establish identical terms for every player or every current contract.

The PGA TOUR’s framework is membership-based. Its official rules index lists a 2026 Player Handbook and Tournament Regulations, and the Tour said in 2022 that members agree to the regulations at the start of each season. The index confirms the current reference documents, but the detailed 2026 clauses are not established by the cited material here.

How event participation is handled
GOLF.com’s 2022 account of disclosed LIV agreements said contracted players were expected to play all league events. That is a reported contract obligation, not proof that every current deal uses the same language.

In 2022, the PGA TOUR said that playing a LIV event without a proper conflicting-event release violated its Tournament Regulations. The Tour’s statement is historical context; consult the 2026 handbook and regulations for current requirements rather than assuming the 2022 description remains complete.
What duties beyond playing were reported in LIV contracts
The disclosed LIV contract examples described work away from competition as part of the player relationship:
Rank #2
- Bound by hand in bonded Leather
- 256 pages
- Dimensions 9.83" W x 1.16" D x 12.6" H
- Team presentation: a contract provision reported by GOLF.com said players had to wear and use approved team apparel and could not display unapproved marks or trading names.
- Sponsor and partner activities: the report described “Service Days” for sponsor or business-partner activities. One disclosed provision referred to up to seven additional Service Days in 2022 and 12 in each following year.
- Other promotional work: reported provisions included pro-ams, appearances, media-approval terms and helping recruit players.
These are historical examples from contracts disclosed in 2022. The cited material does not establish an equivalent, current list of PGA TOUR commercial obligations, so a clause-by-clause comparison would overstate what is known.
How LIV’s 2026 roster process affects renewal and release
LIV’s official explanation of its 2026 roster process uses zones based on 2025 standings. It links results to the status of players whose contracts are expiring:
Rank #3
- Hand bound in luxurious leather
- 264 pages of golf course photography
- Ideal heirloom gift for a golfer
- Lock Zone (top 24): players with expiring contracts receive an offer of at least a one-year extension.
- Open Zone (positions 25–48): LIV may re-sign players, while some may become free agents.
- Drop Zone (49th and lower): players are released from their teams, but can seek to return through LIV Promotions or the International Series.
This is a LIV-specific, standings-based process; the available 2026 PGA TOUR source confirms that the handbook exists but does not establish a matching renewal or relegation mechanism for Tour members.
What suspension, resignation and contract rejection mean
These are different kinds of consequences. In 2022, the PGA TOUR described suspensions for members who played LIV events without a proper release. It also said members who resigned would be removed from the FedExCup points list. Those statements describe the Tour’s position at that time; they are not a complete account of current rules.

A separate issue arose in bankruptcy proceedings. Axios reported on September 9, 2026, that LIV sought Chapter 11 court approval to reject multiple player contracts. Its report said the contracts were sought to be filed under seal, limiting public access to their terms. LIV’s lawyers argued that the agreements “do not provide any material benefit” to the league; that was an advocacy statement in a court filing, not a court finding. The report says court approval is required, and the cited material does not establish that rejection was later approved.

The reported LIV agreements are associated with individualized contract economics, but the cited current account does not provide complete compensation schedules. The bankruptcy report also raises uncertainty about promised compensation without resolving the outcome. The available sources do not support a precise comparison between LIV contract pay and a PGA TOUR salary or guarantee, nor do they establish a standard PGA TOUR salary.
