You can use a Chromebook without Wi-Fi for supported Drive files, Gmail, Keep notes, downloaded media, saved webpages, and some apps—but only if the content and features are prepared while you’re online. What works depends on the app, file type, account settings, and free space on the Chromebook.
What you can do offline on a Chromebook
Google lists Gmail, Keep, supported Google Drive documents, spreadsheets and presentations, photo editing, local media, and offline-ready apps among the ways to use a Chromebook offline. This does not make every website or app available without a connection. Some offline apps and services also will not work in Incognito or guest mode, and work or school administrators may restrict features.

- Drive: Open supported files you marked as available offline; changes sync after you reconnect.
- Gmail: Read synced messages and compose replies. Messages you send offline wait in the Outbox until the Chromebook reconnects.
- Keep: Edit notes that have had time to save to the device.
- Webpages and media: Open webpages saved to the device, downloaded media, and local files in supported formats.
- Apps and games: Use only those that specifically support offline operation.
Google’s offline-use guide describes these options. Treat offline access as a feature to prepare and verify, not as a guarantee that a service will keep working after Wi-Fi disappears.

Prepare Google Drive files before you disconnect
- While online, enable offline access in Google Drive settings.
- Open the Chromebook’s Files app, select Google Drive, then select the files or folders you need.
- Turn on Available offline for each selection. Wait for the check mark before disconnecting.
Google says Chromebook Plus devices also offer File sync for all of My Drive. That option downloads content to the Chromebook, so make sure there is enough local storage first. Offline support is limited to supported file types: Google specifically lists Maps and Forms as unsupported Drive offline files. See Google’s Drive offline instructions for Chromebooks for the current steps and supported-file details.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Set up Gmail offline
- While connected, open Gmail settings and enable offline mail.
- Choose how many days of messages to keep on the device, then save the changes.
- When offline, open Gmail in a regular Chrome window—not an Incognito window.
Messages composed without a connection remain in Outbox and are sent after reconnection. Gmail offline may be unavailable if a work or school administrator has disabled it. Google’s Gmail offline instructions cover setup and account requirements.
Save notes, webpages, downloads, and media
Keep notes
Open Keep while online and give notes time to save before relying on them offline. Google lists Keep as an offline option in its Chromebook offline guide.

Webpages
For a page you will need later, use Chrome’s Save as action while online to keep an HTML copy on the Chromebook. Saving a page does not make its live website or online features available offline.

Download documents to the Chromebook’s local Downloads folder, or download entertainment within the service’s app if that service offers offline viewing or listening. Availability varies by service. The Chromebook can also play local media in supported formats; a streaming subscription or saved playlist should not be assumed to work offline unless the app confirms the download is ready.

Know which files and features may fail offline
- Unsupported Drive files: Google identifies Maps and Forms as files that cannot be used offline through Drive.
- Microsoft 365 files: Google says Microsoft 365 files cannot be opened in the usual Microsoft 365 or Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps while offline. A basic editor with limited functionality may be available. Check Google’s Microsoft 365 file guidance for Chromebooks and test the specific file before depending on it.
- Websites without saved copies: A site that needs a live connection will not become usable merely because Chrome is open.
- Guest and Incognito sessions: Some offline apps and services do not work in these modes; Gmail offline specifically requires a non-Incognito Chrome window.
- Managed accounts or devices: An administrator may control whether offline features, apps, or external storage are allowed.
Check storage and external drives
Offline Drive files are local copies, and downloads also take up Chromebook storage. Google warns that low storage can cause problems with downloads, webpages, settings, accounts, and Android apps; some downloads may be removed automatically when space is low. Check Storage management before syncing a large folder or downloading video, and leave room for the other files and apps you need.
A compatible USB flash drive or other external storage can carry documents and media without using the Chromebook’s internal storage. It does not enable Gmail or bypass an app’s offline limits. Compatibility depends on the Chromebook’s port, the drive’s filesystem, and software or administrator restrictions; confirm that the device is recognized before relying on it. See Google’s external storage guidance.
