Linux has several credible routes to a larger desktop presence, especially through gaming and computers sold with Linux ready to use. But dominance is a forecast, not today’s reality: Statcounter’s September 2026 worldwide desktop-and-console figures put Linux at 4.54% and Windows at 76.27%. Those are reported web-usage shares, not a census of installed computers or proof of what comes next.
1. Linux already has a measurable desktop presence
A platform does not need to lead the market to have a foundation for growth. Statcounter reported Linux at 4.54% of worldwide desktop-and-console web usage in September 2026, compared with Windows at 76.27%. Statcounter’s figures are useful context for Linux’s current position, but they measure reported web usage rather than the number of computers with each operating system installed. One month’s share also cannot establish a growth trend or predict future dominance.

2. Gaming gives Linux a visible way into people’s homes
A finished device can lower the barrier to trying Linux
The Steam Deck is a concrete example of Linux reaching users through a dedicated gaming device. Instead of asking each buyer to choose a distribution and install an operating system, the device presents Linux as part of a ready-to-use product. That makes Linux more visible to people who might not otherwise seek out a Linux computer.
Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey collects monthly data from Steam customers; participation is optional and anonymous. Its results describe the Steam audience, not all desktop users. Valve’s August 2026 Linux-only version breakdown includes SteamOS Holo, showing Linux’s presence within that gaming population. A Linux-only distribution table is not Linux’s overall share of Steam users, and the available figures do not quantify how much the Steam Deck drives broader desktop adoption.

3. Proton makes some Windows games playable on Linux
Game compatibility has long been a practical obstacle for people considering a desktop operating system. Valve describes Proton as a “Compatibility tool for Steam Play based on Wine and additional components.” It provides a route to run some Windows games through Steam Play on Linux, which can make switching more plausible for players whose libraries include compatible titles.
Proton is not a promise that every game will work. Compatibility varies by game, and the existence of the tool does not mean every multiplayer anti-cheat system supports Linux. A prospective switcher should check the specific games and peripherals they rely on rather than assume the whole library will transfer smoothly.

4. Buyers can find computers designed to ship with Linux
Installing an operating system yourself is not the only way to get a Linux computer. Specialist vendors offer laptops with Linux as the intended platform; System76’s laptop catalog is one example. A computer sold for Linux can make setup and initial hardware compatibility less daunting than converting a machine designed around another operating system.

One vendor’s catalog demonstrates that this kind of hardware is available, not that it is broadly stocked in every region or that demand is large enough to change the market. The appeal still depends on whether a buyer can get a suitable model and whether its applications, peripherals, and support fit their needs.

5. Linux offers a choice of distributions and configurations
Linux is not a single desktop product controlled by one vendor. Users can choose among distributions and adjust how their systems are configured. For people who value that flexibility, a platform built around multiple options may be attractive compared with a more uniform desktop experience.
Choice is a potential reason for adoption, not evidence that adoption will follow. More options can also mean more decisions, and open-source software does not automatically make a computer easier to use, more secure, or better for every person. The case for Linux here is that some users value control and variety—not that those qualities guarantee a universal advantage.

What would have to change for Linux to dominate?
These five factors make a credible case for Linux gaining ground, but they do not establish that it will overtake Windows or become the leading desktop platform. For an individual user, the better question is whether Linux works for the applications, games, hardware, and level of configuration they need. For the market as a whole, the evidence here shows visible entry points and a minority share—not a reliable forecast of dominance.
