The Lightning Network is a payment network built from channels anchored to Bitcoin; Core Lightning (CLN) is software that lets an operator run a Lightning node. To pay someone, the recipient supplies an invoice, the payer’s node finds a route through channels with enough usable liquidity, and nodes along that route forward the payment conditionally. A route can still fail even when it looks available: channel balances are not public, and liquidity only works in the direction it is needed.
What the Lightning Network is
Lightning is a peer-to-peer payment network built on payment channels anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain. People and businesses use node software to connect to the network. The network itself is the collection of connected channels and the routes payments can take through them; it is not a single wallet or a single software package.

A channel lets its participants make repeated payments without publishing every balance update to Bitcoin. The blockchain anchors the channel, while payments can be routed across a chain of channels between people who do not share a direct channel. This makes Lightning useful for payments that need not each become a separate on-chain transaction, but it does not remove the need for Bitcoin transactions when a channel is established or closed.
What happens when someone pays over Lightning
A typical payment starts with the recipient and ends with the payer’s node attempting to move value through a route. Both endpoints generally need to be online during the payment. The route also needs enough spendable liquidity in the payment direction at every channel it uses.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
- The recipient creates an invoice. The invoice specifies payment details and is shared with the payer. In CLN, the
invoiceRPC creates an expectation of payment and returns an invoice token. It can specify an amount or allow an any-amount invoice, and can include a route hint for an incoming channel. - The payer presents the invoice to its node. The payer’s node reads the invoice and uses its view of the network to look for a route to the recipient. A route may pass through one or more intermediate nodes and their channels.
- The node checks whether a route appears usable. The route must have sufficient liquidity in the right direction along the path. Routing nodes may also charge fees, so the payer’s node considers the route’s fee policies as well as the available channel information.
- Intermediate nodes forward conditionally. The payment is forwarded across the channel path using time locks and cryptographic hash preimages. This conditional arrangement lets intermediaries help route the payment without taking unilateral custody of the funds.
- The payment completes or fails. If the payment can be completed through the route, the channel balances update without each update being published to Bitcoin. If a channel lacks suitable liquidity or a route cannot be used, the attempt may fail; the payer’s node may need to try another route or the participants may need to change their channel liquidity.
The invoice-and-route sequence is the core distinction from an on-chain payment: the payer is not simply broadcasting a transaction to Bitcoin for each payment. Instead, the nodes attempt to settle it through connected channels, with the blockchain providing the underlying enforcement mechanism if a participant does not cooperate.
Why channel liquidity determines whether a payment works
Channel capacity alone does not tell you how much can be sent in either direction. Public network information can advertise channels, their capacities, and fee policies, but it does not reveal the actual balance distribution inside each channel. Consequently, a route can look plausible from public information and still fail because a channel does not have enough balance available in the required direction.
Outbound and inbound liquidity are different
- Outbound liquidity is the usable balance that lets your node send through a channel. It matters when you want to pay someone.
- Inbound liquidity is the capacity available for value to move into your node. It matters when you want to receive payments.
Having a channel does not automatically mean you can receive a payment. CLN’s FAQ identifies two ways an operator can obtain inbound liquidity: another node opens a channel to the operator, or the operator successfully sends through a channel they opened. The channel’s directional balance changes as payments move value, so sending and receiving requirements are not interchangeable.

What a failed route tells you
A failed attempt does not necessarily mean the invoice is invalid or the whole Lightning Network is unavailable. It may mean that a particular route could not carry the payment at that time, including because one channel had insufficient liquidity in the needed direction. Since public channel data does not expose the actual balance distribution, a route can fail even if its advertised capacity and fee policy appear suitable. The available facts do not establish a universal success rate or a guaranteed alternative route.
Where Core Lightning fits
Core Lightning, often abbreviated CLN, is Blockstream’s open-source implementation of the Lightning Network. It is node software with installation and operating documentation, as well as API and RPC interfaces. Operators use an implementation such as CLN to connect to and use Lightning; CLN is not the network itself.
The distinction is easiest to see in its operations. CLN’s invoice RPC creates an invoice for receiving a payment. Its fundchannel RPC opens a channel by committing a funding transaction to Bitcoin. These are software interfaces for interacting with a node and its channels. The channels and the routes connecting nodes are the network through which payments travel.

CLN is node software, not automatically a consumer wallet
CLN’s documented RPC and API role makes it relevant to people operating nodes or integrating node functions into services. That does not establish that every person who wants to make an occasional Lightning payment needs to install or operate CLN. The right category depends on the job: making a payment, receiving payments through a node, or building and operating software that connects to Lightning are different needs.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe available information establishes CLN’s implementation and RPC role, but does not provide a fair, current comparison with other Lightning implementations. There is therefore no evidence here for naming a universal winner. Anyone choosing node software should compare current official documentation for the intended use, including APIs and integrations, operational model, channel-management tools, platform requirements, and backup and upgrade practices.
What an operator needs to receive through a node
Receiving through a node involves more than creating an invoice. The node needs inbound liquidity, and it needs to be reachable enough for the payment process to take place. A recipient creates and shares an invoice; the payer’s node then has to find a route that can deliver the payment to the recipient through channels with suitable liquidity.

Plan for inbound liquidity
If your node has no suitable inbound capacity, creating an invoice alone does not make the payment possible. CLN’s FAQ describes inbound liquidity arriving when another node opens a channel to yours, or after you successfully send through a channel you opened. These are liquidity considerations, not a guarantee that every invoice will be payable: the payer’s route still needs adequate liquidity along its whole path.
Check inbound connectivity
A node behind a NAT router may need TCP port 9735 forwarded for inbound connectivity. This is a network-setup consideration for an operator, not a universal hardware requirement. The cited guidance does not establish a particular computer, device, or hosting arrangement as necessary, so no specific hardware model should be treated as required on this basis.

Opening a channel is not the same cost event as making a payment through one. CLN’s fundchannel operation opens a channel by committing a funding transaction to Bitcoin, so channel setup interacts with Bitcoin transaction fees and confirmation. Closing a channel also involves the blockchain. Payments routed through channels have separate Lightning routing fees, which may be charged by intermediate nodes.

Neither the total cost nor the time to complete a channel operation or payment can be stated as a fixed amount from these facts. Bitcoin fees and confirmation depend on blockchain conditions, while Lightning routing depends on the route, its fee policies, and available liquidity. A payment is not guaranteed to succeed or settle on a particular schedule just because an invoice was created or a route appeared available.

How conditional forwarding limits intermediary custody
Lightning’s conditional forwarding uses time locks and cryptographic hash preimages. Intermediary nodes can forward a payment without taking unilateral custody of the funds: forwarding is conditional, and the underlying blockchain provides an enforcement path if a participant does not cooperate.
That mechanism should not be mistaken for a claim that every operational risk disappears. A route still needs to be available and sufficiently liquid, and endpoints generally need to be online during payment. Nor does the mechanism establish that Lightning is perfectly private or that payments always succeed instantly. The supported conclusion is narrower: conditional forwarding lets intermediaries participate without simply taking unilateral control of the payment.

- Bitcoin is the base layer anchoring channels and providing blockchain enforcement.
- A channel is a payment relationship in which participants can make repeated balance updates without publishing each one to the blockchain.
- The Lightning Network is the connected system of channels and routes that can carry payments between nodes.
- Core Lightning is one implementation—software used to operate a node and interact with Lightning through documented interfaces such as RPCs.
- An invoice is a payment request the recipient shares; it is not itself proof that a usable route or sufficient liquidity exists.
This model also clarifies why “I have a channel” and “I can receive now” are not equivalent statements. A channel is one part of the path; the direction and distribution of liquidity, connectivity, and the payer’s route determine whether a particular payment can be completed.
