Ivar gives an AI agent one structured view across several code repositories, so a product manager, designer or tech lead can ask plain-language questions such as “How does the login flow work today?” and get an answer grounded in the real code. It only works after engineers define the scope. Ivar supplies the context, and the agent does the reasoning.
What ivar actually does for a non-technical colleague
Most products span more than one repository: an API, a web app, a shared types package. A non-technical teammate who wants to understand how those pieces connect usually has to ask an engineer for a one-off summary or an explanation of a dependency graph. Ivar replaces part of that routine by assembling the repositories into a single view directory, on the branches the team chose, alongside instructions for the agent. The teammate asks in natural language, and the agent reads that shared context and explains it.

The Hall: the map engineers must maintain
The central concept is the Hall. The engineering team defines it, and it describes three things:

- the repositories the project depends on;
- the branches to use for each;
- instruction files that carry team conventions for the agent.
The Hall is version-controlled, so adding or removing a repository means changing a shared source of truth rather than editing someone’s local setup. Ivar does not discover repositories automatically. In the words of the article’s author, Gabriel Menezes: “Ivar also does not discover repos automatically.” If a repository is missing from the Hall, the agent cannot see it, and a confident-sounding answer about a flow that crosses into that repository will be incomplete.
How a non-technical person gets started
- Ask an engineer to show you the team’s Hall, so you know which repositories and branches the agent can see.
- Read the instruction files it references; they reveal the conventions the agent has been told to follow.
- Start with explanatory questions: how a flow works, how front end and back end connect, what an API contract looks like.
- Move on to history-style questions, such as which repositories changed in the last feature delivery.
The vendor article says setup takes “less than an hour.” That is the author’s estimate, with no stated study or sample, so treat it as a rough expectation, not a benchmark.

Where the multi-repo feature workflow fits
Ivar also has a feature workflow aimed at engineers, which matters to non-technical teams because it makes cross-repository changes easier to describe and track. According to the Rust documentation for ivar’s feature module (docs.rs, ivar 0.14.0 in the search listing), a feature uses one branch name shared across the promoted repositories, and each repository tracks its own promotion and worktree state.

The three-repository walkthrough
In the author’s walkthrough, “One feature, three repos,” an API, a web application and a shared types package each get a worktree for the same feature branch. A feature status reports readiness per repository. Delivery then has two steps:

- Preview. A side-effect-free step reads branch, remote, base and existing pull-request information.
- Apply. The team applies using the preview’s fingerprint. This pushes the feature branches and, with GitHub remotes, opens linked pull requests.
Hosting matters: linked pull requests need GitHub remotes. With local remotes, delivery only pushes. The walkthrough is a vendor demonstration, not independent testing, and other teams’ setups may behave differently.
What ivar does not do
- It does not replace a project-management tool, a CI pipeline or the engineering team.
- It does not find repositories on its own.
- It does not reason; the AI agent does, and only from the context the Hall and view directory provide.
The sources are vendor-authored, and none provides adoption, time-saved, accuracy or ROI figures. Verify important answers, especially about contracts or behavior that affects customers, with an engineer.

The Bottom Line
Ivar is worth a look if your product spans several repositories and your non-engineers keep interrupting developers for explanations. Its value depends on an engineer keeping the Hall accurate. Without that, the agent’s view will have gaps.
