Antimony is not made into metal by a single universal process. For stibnite-rich ore, the usual sequence is to crush and grind the ore, concentrate antimony-bearing minerals when useful, extract antimony using a route suited to the feed, and refine the resulting crude metal. Roasting and oxide reduction, smelting, liquation, iron precipitation, and leaching with electrowinning are alternative routes—not steps every ore passes through.
What happens between antimony ore and metal?
- Prepare the ore: crush and grind it to expose antimony-bearing minerals.
- Concentrate when appropriate: use a separation method such as flotation to produce a richer feed. Concentration does not turn ore into metal.
- Extract the antimony: select a thermal or hydrometallurgical route based on the feed’s grade, mineralogy, and associated materials.
- Recover and refine the product: collect antimony-bearing intermediates or crude metal, then remove impurities as required.
The main sulfide ore mineral is stibnite (Sb2S3). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) describes it as the primary antimony ore mineral; its 2017 Professional Paper notes that more than 100 other minerals also contain antimony. Antimony may therefore be mined as the main product or recovered from more complex ores.

Why is ore concentrated before extraction?
Crushing and grinding help liberate antimony-bearing particles from surrounding gangue—the material in the ore that is not the desired mineral. Froth flotation can then separate stibnite-rich particles from gangue to make a concentrate for further treatment.
A USGS circular, Antimony Recycling in the United States in 2000, reported flotation results of concentrate containing more than 60% antimony and recovery of up to 95%. These are reported results in a historical technical source, not a promise for a particular ore or a benchmark for every current plant. Actual performance depends on the feed and process design.

Which routes can extract antimony?
Historical technical descriptions present several alternatives. Their examples of feed grades are historical guidance, not universal cutoffs or current design specifications.

Roasting, fume collection, and reduction
When roasting produces antimony-bearing fume, collection equipment such as baghouses or precipitators captures particulate matter so it can be recovered or reprocessed. The collected oxide-bearing material can be reduced with a carbonaceous reductant; flux is also used in the described reduction route. The products include molten crude metal and slag. Fume collection is an important part of the process because antimony-bearing particles should not be treated as harmless dust.

Why does the chosen route vary by ore?
A flowsheet is selected for a particular feed rather than inferred from the word “antimony ore” alone. Relevant factors include:

- antimony grade and the mineral form in which it occurs;
- how readily grinding liberates the antimony-bearing minerals from gangue;
- the gangue and other metals present in the feed;
- the impurity profile of the concentrate or intermediate product; and
- how the process handles sulfur, residues, water, emissions, and tailings.
When comparing two routes, recovery and product quality matter alongside the handling of impurity-bearing streams and the process’s energy, emissions, tailings, residues, and water-management demands. The sources cited here do not provide comparable current plant-level figures across those measures, so they cannot establish which route performs best in general.

How is crude antimony refined?
Antimony leaving an extraction step is crude metal, not necessarily a finished product of a specified purity. The historical process descriptions identify arsenic, sulfur, iron, copper, and lead as possible impurities. They describe iron and copper being removed into a matte, followed by an oxidizing-flux treatment for arsenic and sulfur. Lead is more difficult to remove; lead-bearing material may instead be directed to lead-base alloys. The exact refining sequence depends on the crude metal and the required product.

Concentration and extraction produce streams beyond the recovered metal, including tailings, waste rock, slag, matte, and potentially antimony-bearing fume or residues. USGS material on mine wastes reports that stibnite and sulfosalts can release antimony to surface water and groundwater and contribute to contamination of soils, plants, and river sediments. Antimony can also occur in waste rock and tailings where it is not the principal recovered commodity.

These pathways make containment, dust and fume capture, and appropriate management of water and solid residues important parts of process design. They do not, by themselves, specify the legal requirements for a particular mine or facility. High-concentration exposure can cause adverse health effects; the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry provides health and exposure information.
