Apple describes a layered security system that includes app review, code signing, sandboxing, and checks for known malicious apps. A third-party app labeled “antivirus” should not be assumed to scan or remove malware across your iPhone or iPad.
Do you need an antivirus app on an iPhone?
Usually, not in the desktop-scanner sense. Apple builds protections into iOS and iPadOS: apps are reviewed and signed, and sandboxing is designed to limit an app’s ability to affect other apps or the rest of the system. These safeguards come from the operating system and Apple’s app-distribution process, not from a third-party app scanning every file on the device.

Apple says that outside the European Union, iOS and iPadOS apps must be downloaded from the App Store. Apple’s security guide, published December 19, 2024, describes developer identification, automated and human app review, runtime code-signature checks, and protections intended to prevent an app from compromising other apps or the system after it has been verified as coming from an approved source. Distribution rules differ by region; see Apple’s introduction to app security for iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS.

It contrasts this model with macOS, which Apple describes as having antivirus protection. Do not assume that a security feature available on a Mac works the same way on an iPhone or iPad.

Is there a free antivirus for iPad?
You may find apps marketed as antivirus or mobile security in the App Store, but the label alone does not establish that an app scans the whole iPad for malware. Apple’s documentation describes platform protections and checks for identified malicious apps; it does not support a blanket claim that every third-party security app can inspect or clean the entire device.
Some security apps may offer narrower services, such as web filtering, identity monitoring, or a VPN. Those features are not equivalent to whole-device malware scanning. In particular, a VPN is an adjacent network-privacy service: the Apple sources cited here do not say that a VPN scans for or removes malware.

- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
Before installing a security app, check its current App Store listing and the developer’s documentation for the exact feature, whether it is genuinely free or only a trial, any subscription conditions, its privacy practices, and whether the feature applies to iPhone or iPad rather than Mac or Windows. Do not rely on the word “antivirus” as proof of a particular capability.

How does iPhone and iPad malware protection work?
- App review and distribution: Apple reviews apps distributed through the App Store. Its distribution rules vary by region.
- Code signing: Apple describes checks that verify an app’s code and approved source.
- Sandboxing: Apps are isolated to limit their access to other apps and system resources.
- Malware alerts: Apple says iPhone and iPad regularly check installed third-party apps for malware identified by Apple. If an app is identified, the device blocks it from opening and displays an alert recommending deletion.
These are layers of protection, not a guarantee that every threat will be detected. Apple’s overview notes that app review measures alone can never be perfect; the broader protections should not be read as proof that iPhone and iPad are immune to attacks.

How do you remove a virus or malware alert from an iPhone?
If iOS or iPadOS displays an alert that a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened, follow Apple’s advice: delete the app. Apple Support states, “If your iPhone or iPad displays an alert that an app contains malware and cannot be opened, delete the app from your device.” The device’s alert guidance warns that using an app flagged this way could harm the device or compromise privacy. See Apple Support’s guidance for a malware alert on iPhone or iPad.
