Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can pay a participating merchant abroad with UPI only where your app, bank account, and the merchant’s QR acceptance arrangement are supported. Before approving, check the app’s confirmation screen: it should show the purchase amount in the local currency and the amount to be debited in rupees, plus any exchange rate or fee it displays. The payment you authorize and the merchant’s later settlement are separate steps; public guidance does not establish one conversion formula, payout currency, or settlement time for every market.
Can you use UPI internationally?
Yes, in supported locations and at participating merchants. International UPI acceptance is not countrywide coverage: a merchant’s QR must be connected through a supported international acceptance arrangement, and you need an enabled UPI app and eligible linked bank account. Check the current NPCI UPI Global Acceptance information and your bank or app’s terms; availability can change.

NPCI’s customer flow is straightforward:
- Enable international use. In a supported UPI app, activate UPI Global or International for the bank account you intend to use. The exact app controls can vary.
- Confirm the merchant accepts it. Look for a BHIM UPI or network-partner QR acceptance sign and ask the merchant if necessary. A QR code by itself does not guarantee international UPI support.
- Scan and review the payment. Check the merchant and the amount in both local currency and INR. Review any exchange rate or fee shown in the app.
- Authorize with your UPI PIN. Enter the PIN only after confirming the transaction details. NPCI says both customer and merchant receive a notification after a successful payment.
International network partners provide merchant acceptance in destination markets, connecting the local merchant payment to participating Indian banks and UPI apps. NIPL describes real-time debit visibility through these partners, but that customer-facing experience does not by itself tell you when or in what currency the merchant’s acquiring arrangement pays out.
Which currency does UPI charge?
The merchant’s price is generally presented in the destination currency, while NPCI instructs users to check the final amount in both that foreign currency and Indian rupees. The INR figure on the app’s confirmation screen is the practical amount to review before authorization. Inspect the amount and any rate or fee the app discloses rather than assuming that the local-currency price will convert at a particular rate.

NIPL promotes “Transparent foreign exchange rates” and characterizes FX margins and fees for cross-border UPI person-to-merchant payments as “notably low.” That is a general product statement, not a published universal markup, guaranteed fee, or demonstrated promise that UPI will cost less than every card, cash, or travel-money option. The official material does not set out one conversion formula or rate-timing rule for all corridors. Your applicable conversion and charges may depend on the bank, app, and international payment arrangement. See NIPL’s UPI acceptance and reverse-acceptance overview.
If comparing payment methods for a specific purchase, compare the actual rupee cost for the same local-currency amount, the rate source and timing, separately listed fees, whether the method is accepted at that merchant, and dispute or refund support. A general claim that UPI is always cheaper or more widely accepted is not supported by the published material.

How does settlement work, and when does the merchant get paid?
Settlement is the movement of funds among payment participants and the merchant’s acquiring arrangement after the customer authorizes a payment. It is distinct from the app showing a successful authorization or debit. NPCI’s general merchant FAQ says funds reach the merchant’s pool or bank account according to the merchant’s agreement with its acquirer. That guidance is not an international-corridor payout-time guarantee.
NIPL’s 2023–24 financial statements, signed on 15 May 2024, say that NPCI handled settlement of international scheme funds at the time covered by the report. The statement also discusses foreign inward remittances, a different flow. It does not specify a complete, current settlement chain for each international merchant QR payment, including how conversion, clearing, settlement currency, payout, or timing work in each market. See the NPCI UPI FAQ for general merchant guidance and NIPL’s 2023–24 financial statements for the dated corporate arrangement.

Accordingly, a successful UPI authorization should not be read as proof that the foreign merchant receives INR, is paid instantly in local currency, or uses a particular exchange-rate timestamp. Those backend details are not established universally in the public guidance cited here and may depend on the corridor and acquiring partner.
Three cross-border UPI services that are easy to confuse
| Service | Who pays whom | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| UPI Global Acceptance | Indian UPI user to participating merchant abroad | The user scans a supported merchant QR and authorizes payment from an eligible linked Indian bank account in an enabled app. |
| UPI for NRIs | Eligible NRE/NRO account holder using a supported international mobile number | Participating banks and apps may allow eligible account holders to link supported overseas numbers, subject to bank terms. |
| UPI One World | International visitor to Indian merchant | An app-based prepaid wallet for visitors paying Indian merchants; it is the reverse direction from an Indian account holder paying abroad. |
UPI for NRIs
NPCI says eligible NRE or NRO account holders may link supported international mobile numbers through participating banks and apps, subject to each bank’s terms. Its UPI for NRIs live-members list is a changeable availability reference, not a permanent guarantee. Confirm eligibility with the bank and app you plan to use.

UPI One World
NPCI’s 16 February 2026 announcement described a summit pilot for delegates from over 40 countries. It involved wallet issuance at named Delhi locations, passport and visa verification, and loading via international cards; some countries were excluded under regulatory guidance. The pilot’s stated limits were INR 25,000 per transaction, no more than two wallet loads per month, and INR 50,000 total per month. Unused balance could be transferred to the original payment source subject to foreign-exchange regulations. These are terms of that announced summit initiative, not evidence of a standing offer for all visitors. See NPCI’s UPI One World announcement.

Availability depends on the market and merchant
NPCI’s international acceptance information directs users to enabled countries, banks, and apps, while NIPL describes acceptance through selected markets and network partners. Availability is tied to participating merchants, not simply to being physically present in a listed country. Check the current NPCI, NIPL, bank, and app information before relying on UPI for a trip.

For a dated example, NIPL said UPI merchant acceptance with Fonepay launched in Nepal in March 2024 and reported more than 100,000 cross-border person-to-merchant transactions by August 2024. That is a historical launch milestone, not a current transaction count or a complete list of supported locations. See NIPL’s Nepal announcement.
