Instant cameras expose self-developing film, then use rollers to spread processing chemistry across the print as it ejects. The image forms inside the sheet over time—not all at once. For fresh Polaroid prints, shielding matters because the film remains light-sensitive after ejection; Fujifilm Instax gives related but distinct handling guidance, so follow the instructions for your specific film.
How does an instant camera develop a photo?
- Exposure: Light from the scene passes through the lens and exposes the film. Fujifilm describes the image as being captured on the back of Instax film.
- Chemistry spreads during ejection: The print passes through rollers as it leaves the camera. On Instax, the rollers spread developer fluid across the frame. Polaroid describes its rollers as spreading chemistry between the negative and positive parts of the print.
- The image forms: Chemical reactions in the film layers create the positive image. The print is still developing after it emerges; Fujifilm says an Instax image gradually appears over about 90 seconds.
The broad process is similar, but film construction and handling instructions are not necessarily identical across brands or generations. For model-specific directions, use the film package and camera manual.

Why should you shield a fresh Polaroid photo from light?
Polaroid says its film remains light-sensitive after ejection. Its camera film shield covers the print for the first few seconds, giving the blue opacification layer time to spread across the frame. Polaroid Support’s article, updated October 29, 2024, says: “Polaroid film is sensitive to light even after it has been ejected from the camera.” It recommends protecting the print from strong light while development continues.

- 2.13 x 3.4 inches image size
- High speed ISO 800
- Excellent sharpness and vibrant color reproduction
- 20 exposures
Polaroid lists not shielding a photo after ejection as one possible cause of a light or overexposed print. It is not the explanation for every washed-out image.
Does Instax need the same light shield?
Do not assume so. Fujifilm’s cited Instax guidance describes the image appearing gradually over about 90 seconds and advises avoiding strong light, but it does not prescribe the same dedicated ejection shield as Polaroid. Fujifilm also advises storing Instax prints cool and dry.

Fujifilm Instax UK says the film paste’s alkalinity weakens approximately 10 minutes after ejection. That is a statement about the paste, not a claim that the image takes 10 minutes to appear.

What should you do when a print ejects?
- Use film made for your camera’s format; Instax and Polaroid systems are separate.
- Follow the film’s own light-handling guidance. Avoid strong light while a fresh print develops.
- For Polaroid, allow the camera’s film shield to cover the print, then keep the photo out of strong light as recommended.
- Do not bend, shake, or interfere with an ejecting sheet.
The cited manufacturer instructions support protecting fresh prints from strong light; they do not say that every instant film needs total darkness or a darkroom.
