What to Do After a Bank Data Breach: Protect Your Accounts and Report Fraud

If you receive a notice that your bank data was exposed—or suspect someone has accessed your financial information—contact your bank through a trusted channel, secure affected logins, review transactions, and report suspicious activity promptly. A breach does not necessarily mean your password or account credentials were exposed, so first ask the institution what information was involved and what steps it recommends for your account.

What should I do after a bank data breach?

  1. Verify the notice independently. Do not use a phone number, link, or callback number in an unexpected message. Call the number on your bank statement or payment card, or type the institution’s known website address yourself. Ask what data was exposed, when the exposure occurred, and what account-specific steps to take. The CFPB advises contacting your financial institution after a breach notice or a reported breach involving shared financial-account data: CFPB guidance on sharing financial data and CFPB guidance on scam and fraud contacts.
  2. Change exposed or reused passwords. Change the password for the affected service through its official website or app. If you used that password for online banking or another financial account, change it there as well. Use a separate, strong password for each financial account. Turn on multifactor authentication and account alerts if your bank offers them; available features differ by institution.
  3. Check account activity and statements. Review recent transactions online or in the mobile app, then check paper statements as they arrive. Look for unfamiliar merchants, withdrawals, and small test transactions. Keep monitoring over time: suspicious activity may not appear immediately after information is stolen. The CFPB recommends watching accounts closely and contacting the institution about possible card-data misuse: CFPB guidance on watching accounts after card data is hacked.
  4. Report anything unfamiliar immediately. Contact the bank or card issuer using a trusted number. Ask how to submit a written dispute or follow-up, and save copies of correspondence, transaction details, dates, names, and reference numbers. If payment-card information may have been used, ask whether the card should be canceled and replaced.
  5. Be alert for follow-up impersonation scams. An unexpected caller who asks for a verification code or tells you to move money to a “safe” account is not a trustworthy way to resolve a breach. Hang up and contact the bank yourself. The FTC’s rule is direct: “Never share a verification code. Ever.” FTC advice on fake bank-fraud calls.

How do I protect my bank account after my information was exposed?

Match your response to the type of information involved. A leaked password calls for credential changes; exposed card data may call for a replacement card; exposed account or identity data makes careful transaction monitoring and heightened caution around convincing scam attempts especially important. Ask the bank what the notice means for your particular account rather than assuming every breach exposed login credentials.

Information or activity What to do Who handles the next step
Online banking or other reused password Change it through the official service; replace the same password anywhere else it was used. Use a unique strong password for each financial account. The bank or service where the password was used.
Debit or credit card data Review transactions, report unfamiliar charges promptly, and ask whether the card should be canceled and replaced. The card issuer or bank.
Bank account number or other financial data Ask the bank which protective steps apply, monitor transactions and statements, and report unauthorized activity immediately. The bank or credit union holding the account.
A suspicious call, message, or money-transfer request Do not share a code or move money at the caller’s direction. Verify the claim using a number you obtained independently. Your bank for account concerns; the FTC or other appropriate authorities for suspected fraud.

Multifactor authentication and transaction alerts can add useful safeguards when offered, but they do not replace reviewing account activity or reporting a suspicious transaction.

How do I report an unauthorized bank transaction?

Contact the bank or card provider as soon as you notice an unfamiliar debit, charge, or withdrawal. Use a trusted phone number, explain which transaction you dispute, and ask what form or written notice is required. Record the date and time of the contact, the representative’s name, any case or reference number, and the bank’s instructions. Keep copies of statements, messages, and written submissions.

  • LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.

For electronic fund transfers covered by federal error-resolution rules, the applicable notice deadline can depend on how the transaction happened. CFPB guidance says that when an unauthorized withdrawal appears on a statement and the debit card or other access device was not lost or stolen, notify the bank within 60 days after the statement was made available. If a card or PIN was lost or stolen, reporting within two business days after learning of the loss can affect the liability limit. These rules are fact-specific; report immediately and ask which procedure applies to your transaction. See the CFPB’s explanation of unauthorized transactions and missing money.

For a covered electronic-transfer error notice, a bank or credit union generally has 10 business days to investigate. If it determines an error occurred, it must correct the error within one business day and then has three business days to report its findings. This is the general process for covered errors, not a guarantee that every fraud claim will follow the same timeline or outcome.

If the transaction involved a check

Report an unauthorized check to the bank promptly. The CFPB distinguishes checks processed as electronic transfers, which may have additional federal protections, from checks that were not processed electronically, where state law may provide protections. Ask the bank how the check was processed and which dispute procedure applies: CFPB guidance on unauthorized checks.

If you were tricked into sending money

Contact your bank immediately and explain how the transfer was initiated. Do not assume that a scam-induced transfer is handled the same way as a withdrawal made without your authorization; the bank will need the transaction details to identify the applicable process. Preserve the scammer’s messages and any payment or transfer records.

Will the bank refund money stolen from my account?

There is no single answer for every claim. Whether a transaction qualifies for a refund, what liability rules apply, and how the claim is investigated depend on the transaction type, the facts, and how quickly you reported it. For an electronic-transfer dispute, ask the bank to explain its investigation and error-resolution process and provide any required notice in writing. Report the transaction promptly even if you are unsure which rule applies.

Where should I report a bank scam or fraud?

Start with the financial institution involved so it can address the account or transaction. You can also report suspected scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The CFPB identifies the FBI, your state attorney general, and local police as additional reporting options; which makes sense depends on the incident. The FDIC reported that consumers lost $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, an overall consumer-reported fraud-loss figure—not an estimate of losses caused specifically by bank data breaches.
