“Inorganic crystals tuned into tubes” can mean two different structures: crystals confined inside a nanotube, or an inorganic material formed into a nanotube of its own. Researchers make both, using routes such as molten-phase filling, gas-phase reactions and conversion of nanowire templates. The route and the host’s inner surface help determine the resulting structure.
What does “crystal in a tube” mean?
In a filled nanotube, the tube is a host and another material is the guest. Confinement can produce a one-dimensional crystal, a folded layer along the inside wall, or a core–shell structure. In an inorganic nanotube, by contrast, the tube itself is made from the target material. These are related areas of research, but they are not interchangeable descriptions.

Filled carbon nanotubes are one example of the host–guest approach. A 2026 review in ACS Chemical Reviews surveys methods for filling them and describes their use as nanocontainers and confined reaction vessels. The host can alter the guest’s structure and properties relative to bulk material; the effect depends on the materials and conditions, rather than following one universal rule.

One demonstrated route uses molten-phase capillary wetting: heat a guest material until it can enter the tube, then let it wet and fill the narrow cavity. Whether this works depends on the particular guest and host, including the guest’s melting point, viscosity, surface tension, vapor pressure, thermal stability and redox potential. Hong and colleagues’ 2010 review discusses molten salt encapsulation in single-walled carbon nanotubes with cavities approximately 0.8–2 nm wide. That is a reported range for the nanotubes discussed in that review, not a general design limit.

Molten guests in inorganic nanotube hosts
The same 2010 review describes multiwall WS2 nanotubes used as hosts or templates. In one example, molten CsI formed one-dimensional crystal structures inside the cavity. In another, PbI2 layers folded along the inner wall of a WS2 nanotube reported to have an inner diameter of approximately 10 nm and an outer diameter of approximately 20 nm. These dimensions belong to that example; they do not define the dimensions required for other guest–host combinations.
Gas-phase reactions and core–shell tubes
A different route uses gas-phase chemistry rather than a molten guest. Hong and colleagues describe producing WS2@MoS2 core–shell nanotubes through a reaction involving MoCl5 and sulfur in the presence of WS2 nanotubes. Here, the notation indicates a WS2 nanotube core with MoS2 around it—not a free-standing MoS2 crystal inside an unrelated host tube.

How can the inorganic material itself become a tube?
Template conversion offers a route to a tube made from the target inorganic material. A 2019 paper abstract reports single-crystalline γ-Ga2S3 nanotubes made by epitaxially converting GaAs nanowires. The report also identifies control of phase and stoichiometry as challenges: obtaining a tubular shape alone does not guarantee the desired crystal phase or composition.

An abstract index from the Tenne research group describes nanotubes made from quasi-isotropic materials, including spinels, BaTiO3, SiO2 and TiO2. These examples broaden the category beyond materials that form tubes by rolling or folding layered structures.

What controls the structure?
- Which structure is being made: a guest inside a host, a coating or shell on a nanotube, or a tube formed from the target material itself.
- Host cavity and wall chemistry: the available inner diameter and the guest’s interaction with the tube wall influence what can form and how it is arranged.
- Guest properties: for filling strategies, melting point, viscosity, surface tension, vapor pressure, thermal stability and redox potential can matter, as discussed in the 2019 review of crystals confined in carbon nanotubes.
- Synthesis route: molten-phase filling, a gas-phase reaction and nanowire-template conversion impose different material and process requirements. Their conditions are specific to the materials involved.
- Evidence for the proposed structure: distinguish experimentally described structures from mechanisms or stability conditions examined through molecular-dynamics or theoretical work. Hong and colleagues’ review discusses both kinds of work; a modeled explanation should not be presented as direct experimental observation.
What might these materials be used for?
Reviews discuss filled nanotubes in connection with catalysis, energy storage, gas storage and separation, sensing, nanoelectronics and nanoreactors. They also describe optical, electronic, catalytic and mechanical properties as areas of interest. These are research directions, not evidence that the materials are already widely deployed commercially. The available reviews do not establish widespread commercial use.
