A phone with one microphone can still reduce background noise: it captures speech and surrounding sounds together, then software estimates which parts are noise and turns them down while trying to preserve the voice. Because there is no second microphone signal to compare, it cannot use microphone-array beamforming to separate sounds by direction. The result depends on the phone, app, call mode and noise itself—and stronger suppression can make speech sound less natural.
How noise reduction works with one microphone
- Capture: The microphone converts speech, room noise, wind and other nearby sounds into one combined signal.
- Analyze: Processing looks for patterns that are likely to be noise rather than speech. Traditional single-channel methods can estimate steady or repetitive noise; learned methods may identify a broader range of patterns. The exact implementation depends on the phone and its software. Android’s NoiseSuppressor API describes noise suppression as a pre-processor that removes background noise from captured audio.
- Reduce: The system attenuates the estimated noise while trying to retain speech cues. If it suppresses too aggressively, the voice may sound muffled, choppy or artificial. Noise reduction therefore involves a tradeoff between a quieter background and natural, intelligible speech. Qualcomm’s technical discussion describes single-channel reduction as a way to suppress stationary noise, not as a guarantee of a particular result on every phone.
What one microphone can—and cannot—separate
A single microphone can support noise reduction; an additional microphone is not required. But one microphone supplies only one audio channel, so the processor has no second spatial sample to compare. A system with multiple microphones can use differences between their signals to create a directional pickup pattern, alongside other processing. Qualcomm recommends two-microphone arrays with fixed beamformers for close-talk headsets.

| Approach or sound | What to expect |
|---|---|
| One microphone, steady or repetitive noise | Software can estimate and attenuate consistent sounds such as a fan or HVAC hum. Qualcomm says its single-channel approach can suppress stationary noise by up to 10 dB; that is a figure in Qualcomm’s 2021 technical discussion, not a universal smartphone rating or an independent test of a specific phone. |
| One microphone, changing or speech-overlapping sound | Rapidly changing sounds, nearby conversation, music, clicks and wind can be harder to distinguish from speech. Suppression may leave some noise or damage voice quality. |
| Multiple microphones | Microphone-array processing can use spatial differences to form a directional pickup pattern; results still depend on the hardware and processing. |
No processing method can be assumed to eliminate a particular sound on every phone. Microphone placement, call mode and software implementation affect what the other person hears.

Noise suppression reduces background sound in the microphone’s captured signal. Acoustic echo cancellation addresses a different problem: the phone’s received audio playing through its speaker and leaking back into the microphone. The canceller uses the audio sent to the speaker as a reference to remove that returning contribution. Android documents AcousticEchoCanceler separately from noise suppression and notes that echo cancellation is often used alongside it. Gain control may also run in a call system to help keep voice levels consistent; it is a separate job again.

Why the other person may still hear background noise
Suppression is an estimate, not a perfect separation of the voice from everything else. A steady hum may be easier to identify than wind or another person speaking, especially when the unwanted sound overlaps the same frequencies or timing as the voice. Increasing suppression can also remove parts of speech, which is why a system may leave some background sound rather than make the caller’s voice harder to understand.
Behavior varies by device and app. Android exposes noise-suppression and echo-cancellation APIs, but its documentation describes developer-facing effects; availability and activation can depend on the device and audio session. It does not mean every Android phone has a user-accessible switch or behaves the same way.

What to try if your call picks up too much noise
- Check that the call app and phone are using the intended call mode, if the device offers a choice.
- Make sure the microphone opening is not covered or obstructed.
- If the built-in microphone still does not suit a noisy setting, consider a close-talk headset with a boom microphone. It changes the sound source being captured; it does not upgrade the phone’s built-in microphone or guarantee noise-free calls. Headset performance and phone compatibility vary.
