Wireless charging did not follow a documented, continuous climb from 1 W to 1 kW. The Wireless Power Consortium’s published Qi milestones begin at 5 W in 2010 and reach up to 25 W in 2025; vehicle charging is a separate engineering and standards story, with SAE J2954_202408 defining three stationary light-duty charging levels up to 11 kVA. The shift is less a single power ladder than a move from compact consumer chargers to larger, carefully aligned and validated vehicle systems.
How does inductive wireless charging work?
Inductive charging transfers energy through magnetic coupling between coils. An alternating current in a transmitter coil creates a changing magnetic field; a nearby receiver coil picks up that field and develops a voltage. The receiver then converts the transferred energy into a form its device can use. The Wireless Power Consortium’s description of how Qi works explains the basic two-coil arrangement.

Inductive and resonant coupling are related
Wireless power transfer is a broad category, not another name for one specific charging method. A 2015 survey by Mou and Sun distinguishes inductive coupling, magnetic resonant coupling and electromagnetic radiation. Inductive and resonant systems both use near-field magnetic coupling; resonance is an engineering approach that can help transfer energy across a greater separation. Neither makes positioning irrelevant: the survey notes that performance can fall when coils are misaligned, and ordinary inductive systems are limited to short range.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Wireless” still has a practical operating gap
A charger and receiver need to be close enough, and positioned well enough, for useful transfer. That constraint is manageable with a phone resting on a pad. A vehicle system must work across a larger coil gap and account for how the vehicle is parked. Power figures also need a measurement boundary: energy at the transmitter, receiver load, wall input and battery are not interchangeable quantities.

What do the documented Qi power milestones show?
The Wireless Power Consortium’s history describes discrete specification milestones, not a complete record of every product or a smooth rise in delivered charging speed. “Up to” figures describe what a specification can support; they do not mean every certified phone or charger reaches that maximum.
| Qi milestone | Published power point | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Qi 1.0, July 2010 | 5 W | The WPC’s published starting point for Qi’s consumer power history. |
| Qi 1.2, October 2015 | Up to 15 W | The WPC records a higher-power capability. |
| Qi2, April 2023 | 15 W | The WPC identifies magnetic attachment and alignment as a central Qi2 change; its overview describes Qi2 charging at 15 W. |
| Qi 2.2, April 2025 | Up to 25 W | The WPC’s specification history records this maximum; its overview says Qi2 25W launched in July 2025. |
These milestones do not establish a 1 W origin for Qi or a dated 1 kW Qi milestone. The “1 W to 1 kW” wording is therefore best read as a broad framing of power scaling, not as a verified set of endpoints in one standard’s chronology.

Why a higher-rated pad does not guarantee higher phone power
Qi power compatibility is negotiated between transmitter and receiver. The Qi 1.3 introduction says the receiver requests an appropriate power level; its profiles include baseline power up to 5 W and extended power up to 15 W. A stronger pad cannot simply force a compatible phone to take its maximum rating. For a real purchase, match the charger’s supported capability to the device’s, and check that the product is Qi-certified rather than relying on wattage printed on packaging.
Why is EV wireless charging a different scale?
Phone charging and vehicle charging share the broad idea of transferring energy through magnetic coupling, but they are not interchangeable systems. Consumer Qi is a Wireless Power Consortium standard for devices such as phones. SAE J2954 addresses stationary wireless power transfer for light-duty plug-in and electric vehicles, with different coil systems, installation conditions, interoperability work and safety requirements.

What SAE J2954_202408 covers
SAE International’s J2954_202408, revised August 13, 2024, defines three charging levels up to 11 kVA for stationary light-duty vehicle wireless power transfer. The stated scope covers above-ground, surface-mounted installations and unidirectional grid-to-vehicle transfer. SAE uses kVA for the standard’s defined levels; that is not a claim of an equivalent amount of power delivered to a vehicle battery in kW.
- The document covers stationary charging for light-duty vehicles, including home and public charging use cases.
- It addresses interoperability, electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic fields, minimum performance, safety and testing.
- In the near term, SAE expects vehicles capable of J2954 wireless charging also to support SAE J1772 conductive charging.
- Heavy-duty charging is treated in J2954/2; dynamic roadway charging is to be specified in J2954/3.
- Bidirectional transfer and vehicle-to-grid operation are discussed as future standard work, not as capabilities covered by this 2024 edition. SAE’s 22 kVA figure is identified as a future-revision level, not a current J2954 charging level.
What does kilowatt-scale validation establish?
A 2019 SAE paper describes validation tests using 3.7 kW and 11 kW systems, two coil topologies and a 250 mm air gap. The campaign reports that many tests exceeded 90% AC-to-DC efficiency. That result belongs to the reported test campaign and its AC-input-to-DC-output boundary; it is not a universal efficiency guarantee for commercial chargers or a measure of power reaching a vehicle battery.

The campaign also illustrates why vehicle charging validation goes beyond demonstrating that energy crosses an air gap. It involved automakers, suppliers, government employees and national laboratories; the work checked interoperability across system designs and power classes and assessed representative medical devices’ susceptibility to emissions. Alignment, coil design, emissions and system compatibility all matter alongside the headline power rating.

What changes as wireless charging power scales up?
| Engineering question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Application and scale | A portable device on a pad and a parked vehicle are different use cases with different power classes and infrastructure. |
| Coil gap and positioning | Separation and lateral or angular misalignment affect coupling; Qi2’s magnetic attachment/alignment addresses positioning for compatible consumer products, while vehicle systems must work with a vehicle’s parking position. |
| Power measurement boundary | Transmitter output, receiver-side power, AC input and battery-side power describe different points in the system. An efficiency result is meaningful only when its input and output are specified. |
| Interoperability | Standards and testing establish whether equipment designed by different parties can work together under defined conditions. |
| Safety and emissions | Vehicle-scale systems require attention to electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic fields, safety and potential effects on nearby devices, in addition to power transfer. |
Consequently, a wattage comparison by itself cannot tell a reader how far a system can transfer power, how tolerant it is of misalignment, how efficiently it charges a battery or whether a particular vehicle and charging installation are compatible.
What the “1 W to 1 kW” framing can—and cannot—say
The available milestones support a clear account of increasing capability in consumer Qi and a separate account of vehicle-scale wireless charging. They do not establish a continuous inductive-charging history with a verified 1 W starting point and 1 kW endpoint. Qi’s documented WPC history starts at 5 W; the cited SAE standard specifies up to 11 kVA for its current light-duty stationary scope, while the 2019 validation paper reports 3.7 kW and 11 kW test systems. Those figures describe different standards, units and contexts, so they should not be presented as adjacent rungs on a single product timeline.
