To find a quarterback to stream, start with players actually available in your league, confirm one is expected to start, then weigh health, recent opportunity, rushing, pass-catchers and the week’s matchup. No checklist can guarantee a score: the best waiver option is a week-specific decision, not a universal ranking.
How to build a useful quarterback shortlist
- Check your league’s waiver pool. Availability varies by platform and league size, so remove rostered players before comparing recommendations. NFL Fantasy’s Week 3, 2026 column used an under-60%-rostered ESPN threshold for its suggestions; that was the column’s inclusion rule, not a general definition of an available quarterback. PFF describes syncing Sleeper, Yahoo! or ESPN leagues so already-rostered players are filtered out in its Waiver Wire Tool.
- Verify the starting role and health. Favor a quarterback with a credible path to start and check current injury news. A backup with a tempting matchup is not a dependable option unless he is expected to play. NFL Fantasy’s Week 3 advice on Drew Lock, for example, depended on whether he would start for the injured Sam Darnold.
- Review recent production and opportunity. Look at attempts, completions, efficiency, touchdowns and fantasy output, and ask whether the evidence spans multiple games. A single big week can identify upside, but it does not establish a stable floor. In its Week 4, 2026 overview, PFF noted that several widely available quarterbacks had topped 20 fantasy points in one week, while none of the available players averaged more than 20 points per game. Those were dated observations about that week’s thin waiver pool, not a threshold to apply every season.
- Account for rushing and pass-catcher availability. Rushing can provide another route to fantasy points. Injuries or returns among a quarterback’s receivers can also change his outlook. NFL Fantasy’s Week 2, 2026 article tied its view of Justin Herbert to Ladd McConkey’s availability and compared Herbert’s yards per attempt with McConkey on and off the field.
- Assess the opponent and near-term schedule. A favorable matchup can make a competent available starter useful for one week, but it cannot resolve uncertainty about whether he will play or how he has performed. NFL Fantasy’s Week 4 advice considered both recent quarterback output and what Atlanta had allowed over its previous two games.
- Recheck before kickoff. Waiver claims, injuries and depth charts change during the week. PFF says its tool refreshes as players are added and injury news changes options. Revisit the actual pool and the latest role news before your lineup locks.
Compare candidates against your league
Once you have a shortlist, compare the same factors for each player. League scoring, roster size and lineup rules matter: a scoring system that rewards rushing or penalizes turnovers can change how two similar passers stack up.

| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Is the player unrostered in your league? | A public recommendation has no value if another manager already has him. |
| Role and health | Is he expected to start, and is his playing status clear? | Uncertain participation can outweigh an attractive matchup. |
| Recent performance and opportunity | Review multiple games where possible, including attempts, efficiency, touchdowns and fantasy results. | Results show what has happened; opportunity and repeatability help frame what might happen next. |
| Rushing and pass-catchers | Consider the quarterback’s rushing contribution and the availability of important receivers. | Both can affect the ways he earns points and the quality of his passing outlook. |
| Opponent and schedule | Assess this week’s defense and the next few matchups. | A streamer may be a short-term play rather than a player to hold. |
These inputs support a reasoned choice, not a universal weighting formula or guaranteed point threshold. The cited weekly advice also does not establish that streaming is more successful over a full season than drafting or holding a quarterback.

Weekly recommendations can change quickly as performances and matchups change. NFL Fantasy’s Week 3, 2026 waiver column described Bryce Young’s early form using 8.9 yards per attempt, 8.0% completion rate over expected and a 113.3 passer rating through two weeks. The same column reported Tyler Shough at 50% rostered in ESPN leagues and above 20 fantasy points in each of his first two weeks. Those figures were the writer’s Week 3 snapshots, not evergreen streaming cutoffs.

By Week 4, NFL Fantasy’s start/sit column cited Shough’s run of at least 22 fantasy points in each of his first three games. It also noted that Atlanta’s prior two opponents had combined for 583 yards and five passing touchdowns against the Falcons. Those details explain the Week 4 recommendations; they should not be carried forward as current player evaluations or matchup data.
Tools can narrow the pool, but not make the decision
A league-synced tool can save time by excluding rostered players and organizing the remaining options by position, matchup or other filters. PFF says its Waiver Wire Tool supports synced Sleeper, Yahoo! and ESPN leagues and displays recent statistics and upcoming schedules. Treat its output as a shortlist: verify the starting role and injury news yourself before committing.

If your starter is injured or has a poor matchup, choose among the available quarterbacks only after confirming who is playing. Prefer evidence that combines a clear role with credible recent opportunity; use rushing, receiver health and matchup to separate otherwise similar options. Then check news again before kickoff. Since the league’s available players and scoring settings determine the answer, there is no single waiver-wire quarterback who is the right replacement for every manager.
