Tejas, Rafale and Su-30MKI are all multirole combat aircraft, but their official descriptions emphasize different strengths: Tejas is a light fighter for air-support and attack missions, the Su-30MKI is a long-range, twin-seat fighter and air-superiority platform, and Dassault presents Rafale as an omnirole aircraft able to switch missions and operate from a carrier or shore base. Those role descriptions are more useful than a simple ranking: the available sources do not provide a like-for-like test that establishes an overall winner.
At a glance: three different role emphases
| Aircraft | Official role emphasis | Configuration or operating context |
|---|---|---|
| Tejas / LCA | HAL describes Tejas as a light, all-weather multirole fighter for offensive air support, close combat, ground attack and ground-maritime operations. | The LCA family includes single-seat fighter variants and twin-seat trainers. Mk1A is a specific, more advanced configuration. |
| Rafale | Dassault calls Rafale “omnirole,” emphasizing its ability to carry out different mission types and change mission during a sortie. | A twin-jet aircraft described by Dassault as able to operate from a carrier or a shore base. |
| Su-30MKI | HAL describes it as a long-range fighter/bomber and air-superiority aircraft; its brochure also lists interceptor and trainer roles. | A twin-seat, twin-engine aircraft. HAL lists in-flight refuelling and 12 hard points for weapons. |
These descriptions come from the aircraft makers and, for Tejas procurement configuration, the Government of India. They indicate intended roles and published features, not a common evaluation of combat performance. HAL’s LCA description, HAL’s Su-30MKI page, HAL’s Su-30MKI brochure, and Dassault’s Rafale overview provide the source descriptions.

Tejas: a light fighter focused on support and attack roles
HAL characterizes Tejas as a 4.5-generation, all-weather multirole fighter. Its listed missions include offensive air support, close combat, ground attack and ground-maritime operations. The broader LCA family includes single-seat Air Force and Navy fighters as well as twin-seat trainer versions, so “Tejas” can refer to more than one configuration. HAL’s LCA page describes these roles and variants.

HAL identifies the Mk1A as the most advanced LCA version and lists AESA radar, an electronic-warfare suite, digital map generation, multifunction displays and other avionics. Those are configuration claims; they should not automatically be read as confirmation that every aircraft in service has every listed feature.

A 2023 Government of India release about the order for 83 Mk1A aircraft described the intended configuration as including updated avionics, AESA radar, an updated electronic-warfare suite and beyond-visual-range (BVR) missile capability. That announcement establishes what was stated for the program and order, not the delivery or fielding status of each capability on every aircraft. The 2023 PIB release is the dated source for the order and planned configuration.
Rafale: mission flexibility and carrier-or-shore basing
Dassault describes Rafale as a twin-jet fighter and uses “omnirole” for its ability to perform different kinds of missions, including changing mission type during a sortie. The manufacturer also says it can operate from an aircraft carrier or a shore base. This is Rafale’s distinguishing official pitch in this comparison: mission and basing flexibility, rather than a single narrowly defined role. Dassault’s overview and its mission-flexibility description explain that positioning.

- IFF antenna array in front of the cockpit distinguishes this CCIP-equipped model from other F-16s.
- Curved form of the F-16 accurately reproduced with trademark Tamiya precision.
- Moveable horizontal stabilizers. "Flaperons" can be modelled in the up or down positions.
- Full ordnance load including AGM-88 HARM, AIM-120C AMRAAM, AIM-9M/X Sidewinder, ECM pod, and fuel tanks included.
- Centerline and inner wing pylons as well as tail assembly feature polycaps to allow easy detachment for storage.
“Omnirole” is Dassault’s own characterization. It communicates the manufacturer’s intended flexibility, but it is not an independent test result proving that Rafale outperforms another aircraft. Published Rafale specifications likewise need to be tied to the version and conditions they describe; they cannot be directly ranked against figures for other aircraft unless definitions and test conditions match. Dassault’s specifications page identifies its performance data as manufacturer-published information.

Su-30MKI: long-range, twin-seat breadth
HAL presents the Su-30MKI as a long-range, twin-seat fighter/bomber and air-superiority aircraft. Its corporate brochure calls it a twin-seat, twin-engine supersonic multipurpose aircraft and lists fighter, interceptor, bomber and trainer roles. The brochure also states that the aircraft supports in-flight refuelling and can carry guided and unguided bombs and missiles on 12 hard points. HAL’s product page and brochure give these manufacturer descriptions and specifications.

The 12 hard points are a published configuration detail, not a direct measure of practical payload or combat effectiveness. The sources do not establish how the aircraft’s usable load, range, sensors or weapons compare in equivalent operational conditions.
Why the roles do not produce a reliable overall ranking
The official material supports a role-based comparison: Tejas is the light fighter in this group; Rafale is promoted for mission switching and carrier-or-shore operation; and Su-30MKI is presented as a long-range, twin-seat platform spanning air-superiority and fighter/bomber roles. It does not supply a shared operational dataset for combat radius, payload, sensor effectiveness, survivability, availability or combat outcomes.
As a result, isolated figures—such as a hard-point count or a performance specification published by one manufacturer—cannot establish which aircraft is “best.” A fair assessment would need to compare specific variants under consistent definitions and conditions, and consider the mission being evaluated. The cited sources do not provide that comparison.
