Image stabilization reduces the visible effects of camera movement. Optical image stabilization (OIS) moves part of the camera’s optics to counter movement; electronic image stabilization (EIS) processes captured images and may crop their edges to smooth the result. Some devices combine methods, but the implementation and supported modes vary by camera.
How optical image stabilization works
OIS uses sensors to detect movement and physically shifts an optical element—often the lens—to help keep the image steady on the sensor. Apple describes its iPhone implementation this way: “With OIS, a gyroscope senses that the camera moved. To reduce image motion, and the resulting blur, the lens moves according to the angle of the gyroscope.” Apple Support explains OIS and vibration exposure. STMicroelectronics’ OIS white paper likewise describes optical stabilization as acting directly on lens position, in contrast to correction performed digitally.

Because OIS changes the optics before the image is recorded, it can reduce blur caused by camera movement. It cannot eliminate every kind of motion or guarantee a sharp image in every situation.
How electronic image stabilization works
EIS uses image data and processing to compensate for movement. In its explanation of RockSteady 3.0, DJI says the system increases shutter speed, analyzes images from the CMOS sensor, cuts off their edges, and combines multiple frames. That is DJI’s description of its own implementation, not a universal specification for all EIS systems. See the DJI Osmo Action 6 FAQ.

The crop gives the software image area it can use to shift the final frame and counter movement. The trade-off is a narrower field of view. How much the frame narrows depends on the device and selected mode; there is no single crop percentage that applies to all cameras.
How OIS and EIS can work together
A camera may use optical and electronic correction in the same capture pipeline. Their balance—and whether either option is available—depends on the camera module, device and recording mode. Stabilization labels alone do not tell you what the camera does in every setting.

Action cameras may also offer horizon correction, which is distinct from simply reducing the visible effect of small shakes. DJI, for example, describes HorizonSteady as correcting horizontal rotation to keep the horizon level, and lists supported resolutions and frame rates in its Osmo Action 6 FAQ. Those mode limits are specific to that product and may change; check the current documentation for the camera you are considering.

What stabilization can and cannot do
It does not remove all blur
OIS is not a cure-all for motion blur. Apple’s archived camera compatibility documentation says OIS is most effective with longer exposures and provides limited benefit for exposure times shorter than 1/30 second. This is historical guidance, not a guarantee for every current phone or camera.

Strong vibration can be a risk
Apple warns that prolonged exposure to high-amplitude vibration in certain frequency ranges may degrade OIS and closed-loop autofocus systems in some iPhone models. The warning concerns particular devices and vibration conditions; it should not be read as a claim that ordinary handheld use damages every stabilized camera. Apple’s support article gives the device and vibration qualification.
Stabilization may limit recording choices
Advanced stabilization can be unavailable in some resolutions, frame rates, fields of view or capture modes. Electronic correction may also tighten the framing through cropping. Check the specifications for the exact camera and mode rather than assuming a feature works at every setting.

How to compare stabilization on two cameras
For a meaningful comparison, check the specific combination of hardware and recording settings you plan to use:
- Correction method: Does the camera use OIS, EIS, horizon correction or a combination?
- Recording settings: Which resolutions and frame rates remain available when stabilization is enabled?
- Framing: Does EIS crop the image, and is the resulting field of view wide enough for your shot?
- Lighting and exposure: How does the selected mode behave in the conditions where you will record?
- Camera module: Is stabilization available on the particular lens or camera module you intend to use?
There is no universal winner between OIS and EIS. The available documentation explains how the methods work and describes specific product features, but does not establish a controlled performance ranking across current phones and action cameras.

Do you need a separate stabilizer?
No. Built-in OIS or EIS may be enough for the way you shoot. A smartphone gimbal is an optional physical accessory that can stabilize a phone; it is separate from the camera’s built-in stabilization and is not required to use it.
