Facial recognition on a smart display is an optional personalization feature on some camera-equipped models, not a universal capability or a secure way to verify identity. The display matches a live camera view to an enrolled face profile so it can show that person’s content or, on some models, trigger personalized actions. Google Nest Hub Max Face Match and Amazon Echo Show Visual ID work differently, and both depend on device compatibility and settings.
How does facial recognition on a smart display work?
After a person enrolls a face profile, a compatible display uses its camera to recognize that person and select content associated with their profile. Google calls its feature Face Match on Nest Hub Max; Amazon calls its feature Visual ID on selected Echo Show models. These are personalization systems, not proof that someone is who they claim to be.

Google Nest Hub Max Face Match
Google says Face Match can proactively show personalized items such as calendar events, weather, music suggestions and news headlines. Voice Match must also be enabled. When multiple enrolled people are present, voice recognition can help the display choose whose results to show. See Google’s Face Match help for its setup and feature details.
Amazon Echo Show Visual ID
Amazon describes Visual ID as an opt-in Alexa Profile feature that is not enabled by default. On compatible Echo Show models, recognition can surface information from the recognized person’s Alexa profile, including calendars, reminders, skills and interests. Amazon’s camera-settings documentation for Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release) also describes personalized routines and assigned reminders. Which actions are available depends on the model and settings. See Amazon’s Visual ID help and camera settings.

What can it access?
“Access” here means using profile information or settings to personalize the display’s response; it does not mean the feature can freely access every account or device function. The documented capabilities differ:
| Feature | Compatible devices documented | What personalization can do | Setup or dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Face Match | Nest Hub Max | Show calendar events, weather, music suggestions and news headlines | Face Match enrollment and Voice Match enabled |
| Amazon Visual ID | Selected compatible Echo Show models; Amazon’s camera-settings page covers Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release) | Show profile content such as calendars, reminders, skills and interests; documented newer models can also trigger personalized routines and assigned reminders | Opt-in Alexa Profile feature; not on by default. Capabilities depend on model and settings. |
These features should not be confused with camera-based presence detection. On documented Amazon models, presence detection can tell that someone is nearby without identifying that person. Video calling, home monitoring, presence sensing and face recognition are separate camera functions, even when they use the same hardware.
Does it send my face or video to the cloud?
Google: setup photos are sent; post-setup camera analysis is local
Google says Nest Hub Max camera sensing analyzes images locally on the device. During Face Match setup, a phone captures several enrollment photos, which are sent to Google and combined to create a face model. After setup, Google says Face Match does not send camera video or images to Google. Google also says images used by camera-sensing features are kept separate from advertising and are not used for ad personalization. These are Google’s statements about its own service and data practices. Details are in its camera-sensing FAQ and Nest privacy commitments.

Amazon: on-device recognition, but enrollment transfer details are not stated
Amazon says Visual ID uses on-device facial recognition. The cited Visual ID and camera-settings documentation does not explain how enrollment images are transferred or how resulting profile data is retained. It would be unsafe to assume Amazon’s enrollment process works like Google’s.

Can I turn it off and delete my face data?
On Nest Hub Max
- Turning off camera sensing disables Face Match and Quick Gestures, but Google says the face model remains on the device.
- Turning off Face Match for a device removes that device’s face model. Removing Face Match from the home removes models from all devices in that home.
- Deleting the device model does not delete the enrollment images used to create it; Google says those images must be managed separately through My Activity.
- Turning off Voice Match also turns off Face Match.
The separate controls matter: disabling camera sensing, disabling Face Match and removing enrollment images are not the same action. Google documents them in its Face Match help and camera-sensing FAQ.
On Echo Show
Amazon says Visual ID can be deleted on the device or in the Alexa app. The physical Microphones & Camera Enable/Disable button temporarily turns off the camera and microphones; disabling the camera affects Live View, Drop In, Visual ID and camera-based presence detection. The cited documentation describes these controls in its Visual ID help and camera settings.

Can someone fool it with a photo?
Google explicitly warns that Face Match is not a security feature and may mistake a photograph or a similar-looking person for the enrolled user. As Google Nest Help puts it, “Your Google Nest Hub Max’s Face Match is not a security feature.” The warning is about Google’s feature; the cited Amazon documentation does not establish Visual ID’s resistance to photographs or other spoofing. Neither vendor documentation cited here publishes matching thresholds, independent accuracy measurements or an anti-spoofing assessment, so recognition should not be treated as secure authentication.
What the available privacy evidence does—and does not—show
Google says camera video is sent to Google only when someone in the home explicitly turns the camera on or enables a feature that needs it, and that a visual indicator appears when the camera is on and sending video. Those statements concern Google Nest devices and should not be generalized to other brands. Amazon’s statement that Visual ID recognition is on-device does not, by itself, establish how enrollment or profile data is handled.

A 2024 academic preprint reports that a forensic examination of one Echo Show 15 found local usage artifacts, including Visual ID movement and user-detection logs. The researchers also used an insecurely stored token to obtain remote user artifacts from Amazon’s cloud. This is a finding about the particular device and forensic method studied, not evidence that ordinary users can obtain those artifacts, that all Echo Show models behave alike, or that the reported issue applies to current models. Read the 2024 preprint for the study’s scope.
Finally, smart-display recognition is not the same as a familiar-face alert in a security camera system. The products have different purposes, settings and data practices.
