I let an AI coding agent act on more of its own review feedback: read a comment, change the code, and return for another review. That loop was useful, but it also made one thing clear: autonomy is not a single on/off setting. I needed to define what the agent could touch, what it could run, and which decisions still required a person. The sources below document that workflow and its risks; the first-person framing describes the premise of this article, not an independently verified account of a particular incident.
What changes when an agent can act on review feedback?
A review comment can become the start of an action loop rather than the end of a discussion: a reviewer identifies an issue, the agent interprets it, proposes or applies a change, and the updated pull request receives another review. GitHub documents a cloud agent that can take tasks from pull-request comments and iterate on a pull request after feedback. Its code-review tooling can also provide line-specific comments and suggestions. GitHub’s agent overview

This is different from asking an AI to summarize comments or suggest a patch for a human to apply. The more actions an agent can take, the more important it becomes to distinguish routine edits from consequential operations. A comment such as “handle this null case” may be narrow; a request to change permissions, delete data, or run an unfamiliar script deserves a different level of scrutiny.
Where should the boundaries go?
Practical boundaries have several parts: task scope, repository and tool permissions, command execution, approval for consequential actions, and validation before changes land. JetBrains recommends explicit scope, logged actions, and human review before code is merged. JetBrains: Building Autonomous Coding Agents
#1 Best Overall
- CEL Doctor: The ANCEL AD310 is one of the best-selling OBD II scanners on the market and is recommended by Scotty Kilmer, a YouTuber and auto mechanic. It can easily determine the cause of the check engine light coming on. After repairing the vehicle's problems, it can quickly read and clear diagnostic trouble codes of emission system, read live data & hard memory data, view freeze frame, I/M monitor readiness and collect vehicle information
- Sturdy and Compact: Equipped with a 2.5 foot cable made of very thick, flexible insulation. It is important to have a sturdy scanner as it can easily fall to the ground when working in a car. The AD310 OBD2 scanner is a well-constructed mechanic tool with a sleek design. It weighs 12 ounces and measures 8.9 x 6.9 x 1.4 inches. Thanks to its compact design and light weight, transporting the device is not a problem. The buttons are clearly labelled and the screen is large and displays results clearly
- Accurate Fast and Easy to Use: The AD310 scanner can help you or your mechanic understand if your car is in good condition, provides exceptionally accurate and fast results, reads and clears engine trouble emission codes in seconds after you fixed the problem. This device will let you know immediately and fix the problem right away without any car knowledge. No need for batteries or a charger, get power directly from the OBDII Data Link Connector in your vehicle
- OBDII Protocols and Car Compatibility: Many cheap scan tools do not really support all OBD2 protocols. AD310 scanner as it can support all OBDII protocols such as KWP2000, J1850 VPW, ISO9141, J1850 PWM and CAN. This device also has extensive vehicle compatibility with 1996 US-based, 2000 EU-based and Asian cars, light trucks, SUVs, as well as newer OBD2 and CAN vehicles both domestic and foreign. Pls confirm with our customer service whether it is compatible with your vehicle before purchasing
- Home Necessity and Worthy to Own: This is an excellent code reader to travel or home with as it weighs less and it is compact in design. You can easily slide it in your backpack as you head to the garage, or put it on the dashboard, this will be a great fit for you. The AD310 is not only portable, but also accurate and fast in performance. Moreover, it covers various car brands and is suitable for people who just need a code reader to check their car
Keep the task and workspace narrow
Give the agent a defined issue or review comment, the relevant repository context, and explicit project instructions. Avoid granting access to unrelated repositories, files, or services when the task does not need them. A narrow assignment makes it easier to judge whether the resulting patch matches the request.
Separate editing from consequential actions
Editing a branch is not the same as approving a merge or changing a production setting. Keep review and merge decisions with a person, and require approval before actions that could expose secrets, delete data, weaken security, or execute untrusted code. OpenAI describes Auto-review as a separate agent that evaluates requests to cross a sandbox boundary by considering intent, environment, policy, and likely impact. Its stated concern areas include data exfiltration, secret exposure, deletion, security-setting changes, and untrusted code. OpenAI Alignment Research: Auto-review of agent actions without synchronous human oversight
That extra review is a guardrail, not a guarantee. OpenAI explicitly warns, “Auto-review should not be treated as a guarantee of security,” and reports that red-teamers found cases in which the reviewer could be misled into approving commands.
Keep the audit trail visible
Use a branch and pull request so the proposed changes, discussion, and review history remain inspectable. Check which instructions and repository context the agent used; GitHub says Copilot code review can use custom repository instructions. A visible diff and recorded actions make it possible to spot when an apparently small comment led to a wider change.

What should still be checked by a person?
Generated code can be wrong, insecure, or technically plausible while missing the intended behavior. GitHub recommends carefully reviewing and testing suggestions and generated changes. GitHub’s agent overview
- Intent: Does the patch solve the underlying problem, not just satisfy the literal wording of a comment?
- Scope: Are the changed files and behavior limited to what the task requires?
- Validation: Do the project’s tests, build, and lint checks pass? JetBrains identifies tests, builds, and linting as ways to validate agent output. JetBrains: Building Autonomous Coding Agents
- Security and side effects: Does the change expose data, alter access controls, add risky dependencies, or introduce behavior the review did not request?
- Residual risk: Even if checks pass, is the change safe and appropriate to merge?
A passing test suite is evidence that specified checks succeeded, not proof that the patch is correct or secure. Automated review can help find issues, but it should not make the final judgment about whether the change matches the project’s intent.

Why a reviewer may be useful without catching everything
Automated review has a trade-off between finding more possible issues and keeping feedback useful. In a December 2025 account of its code-review approach, OpenAI’s authors said they accepted “a measured tradeoff: modestly reduced recall in exchange for high signal quality and developer trust.” Their reasoning was that false alarms impose a verification cost on developers. OpenAI Alignment Research: A Practical Approach to Verifying Code at Scale
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That choice does not mean missed issues are harmless. It means a reviewer that flags fewer, more actionable findings can be preferable to one that overwhelms people with low-confidence alerts. Treat automated findings as leads to investigate, not as a complete account of a change’s risks.

What does an automated review cost?
GitHub’s documentation estimates AI-credit consumption of $0.05–$1 per Lite review and $0.25–$5 per Balanced review. These are vendor estimates, not guaranteed prices; they exclude GitHub Actions minutes, and actual use may vary with pull-request size and custom instructions.
