How I Cut Filament Waste on Large Multicolor 3D Prints

Splitting a large multicolor print can reduce repeated color changes in some designs, but only a full slicer comparison reveals whether it saves filament overall.

For my large multicolor prints, I stopped treating the model as one job: when its geometry allowed, I split it into color-specific pieces and printed those separately. That can reduce repeated filament swaps inside a part, but it is not a guaranteed saving. Check the slicer’s estimates for the complete design—including connectors, supports, purge material, and assembly—before committing to the split.

Why a large multicolor print can waste filament

On a single-hotend printer, switching colors or materials requires clearing or stabilizing the filament path. A slicer may use a wipe or prime tower to handle that transition. The waste is therefore tied largely to the number of changes and how the printer manages them, not simply to how physically large the object is.

Prusa Research puts it directly: “The wipe tower size is not dependent on the size of the object being printed but on the amount of color changes.” Prusa’s wipe-tower documentation also notes that printing multiple copies or larger objects can make the tower’s material more efficient by sharing its burden. Large dimensions alone are not a reason to expect a large purge saving from splitting.

When splitting a model may help

If the design can be divided into pieces that each use fewer colors, separate prints may avoid repeated swaps within those pieces. This is most promising when the split follows natural color boundaries and the parts can be assembled without difficult alignment or visible seams.

SUNLU PLA Filament 1.75mm, 250g Spool Bundle, 3D Printer Filament
  • 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
  • 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
  • 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
  • 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
  • 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use

Splitting changes more than purge volume. It may add seams, connectors, fit and assembly work, alter strength or print orientation, require supports, or mean more bed setups. Those costs depend on the model; there is no documented universal saving for splitting large parts. Compare the sliced totals for the intact and split versions rather than assuming the change will pay off.

Compare the whole job, not just the tower

Before deciding, inspect the slicer preview and record its estimates for model material, purge or flush, tower, supports, and total filament. For the split version, include alignment features or connectors and the material for every color-group print. Compare print duration too: fewer color changes do not automatically mean a faster finished project if the parts need extra setups or support.

  • After-sales Service: AMOLEN is focused on innovative and better quality 3d printing filaments. Stand behind the quality and performance of our 3D printer filament. Provide professional 3D printing technical guidance and good 24/7 customer service

A small trial is useful when the estimate is close or the assembly is critical. Use the same printer, filament, and relevant slicer settings for both versions, then compare the actual material use and fit. Without those measurements, treat a reduction as a possibility rather than a result established for your model.

Reduce disposable purge without splitting

Route purge into infill or supports

OrcaSlicer documents options to flush material into infill or supports rather than sending all of it to a tower. Its multimaterial settings documentation says these options can lower waste and print time, but they only take effect when the prime tower is enabled. Inspect the model’s walls and preview: mixed-color infill can show through transparent or thin walls, so hidden placement is not always visually hidden.

Use a wipe object or wipe into infill

PrusaSlicer users can consider wiping into infill or into a sacrificial object to reduce material deposited on the tower. Prusa cautions that infill may not be sufficient to eliminate the tower, and purge color can show through light-colored walls. A sacrificial wipe object can also have color mixing or surface artifacts. These approaches trade some disposable tower material for potential contamination elsewhere in the print; check the sliced result and visible surfaces.

Consider the experimental sparse-layer setting carefully

Prusa reports that, across its set of multimaterial projects, the experimental “wipe tower without sparse layers” option reduced total print time by 3.16% and filament deposited on the wipe tower by 16.17%. The page does not state a year for those figures, and they apply to that project set and feature—not to splitting models or to every print. Prusa marks the option experimental and documents a possible collision concern for certain configurations. Check the current wipe-tower guidance and your slicer version before using it.

Do not treat tower-free printing as a universal setting

Prusa’s tower-free instructions are specific to the Original Prusa XL multi-tool printer. The company says, “The Original Prusa XL can print true multi-material prints without the need for any purge or wipe tower.” That is not a general single-nozzle filament-switch method. Prusa also advises dry filament and regular monitoring when trying the XL workflow; its default tower remains intended to support broad material coverage and reliability. See the Original Prusa XL tower-free guidance for its scope and requirements.

Choose the approach that fits your model and printer

Approach What may change Trade-offs to check
Split into color-specific parts May reduce repeated swaps within each part; actual purge and total filament depend on the sliced design. Seams, fit, assembly, strength, supports, and additional print setups depend on the model.
Batch multiple copies Can share a wipe tower’s material burden across objects, according to Prusa’s documentation. Does not necessarily reduce color-change count; check the job’s total material and duration.
Flush into infill or supports Can route some purge into model structures; OrcaSlicer says it may reduce waste and time when a prime tower is enabled. Mixed color may show through transparent or thin walls; preview the affected areas.
Wipe into a sacrificial object Can reduce material deposited on the tower. The object may show color mixing or artifacts; it still consumes filament.
Print without a purge tower Documented by Prusa for the Original Prusa XL multi-tool workflow. Do not assume it applies to single-nozzle printers; the XL guidance emphasizes dry filament and monitoring.

In practice, start with the slicer’s estimates for the intact model, then test only the alternatives your geometry and printer support. A split is worthwhile when its reduction in swaps and purge outweighs its extra material, time, and assembly costs—not simply because the original part is large.
