How I Built LexisAi: From AI Text Transformations to a Real Product

LexisAi’s creator describes the engineering and product decisions behind turning an AI text transformation tool into a web product.

Turning an AI text tool into a product means building more than a prompt box: the application also needs a server-side trust boundary, reliable usage accounting, verified paid access, and a plan for handling unsupported output. In his September 26, 2026 DEV Community account, indie developer and student Jerop describes how he approached those decisions while building LexisAi. The implementation details and product claims below are Jerop’s account; they have not been independently tested.

What LexisAi is designed to do

Jerop describes LexisAi as an AI writing assistant built around a simple interaction: a user supplies text and an instruction, and the service returns transformed text. Examples include rewriting, proofreading, summarizing, and adjusting tone for everyday writing.

That framing matters: LexisAi is presented as a text-transformation product, not as a demonstrated measure of writing quality. Jerop’s account does not include benchmarks, a test protocol, or an independently measured reliability result.

How the request moves through the product

Jerop outlines a flow from the user interface to the model and back: user input → React interface → API request → server → AI generation → validation or processing → response → displayed result. The server handles API-related logic so sensitive credentials are not placed in the browser frontend, according to the author.

#1 Best Overall

  • 💻 Works Seamlessly in Any Desktop App – Type with your voice in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Teams, emails, and more. Just place your cursor in any text field and start speaking!
  • 📱 Mobile App for Enhanced Voice Input – The AI VoiceWriter mobile app enhances voice recognition by using your phone’s microphone as an input device for clearer, more accurate dictation—while typing on your desktop. Supports iOS 15 & above, Android 9.0 & above.
  • 🌎 Multilingual Voice Typing & AI Assistance – Supports 33 languages for dictation, plus AI-powered features in Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Italian and, Swedish.

This is an account of the intended implementation boundary, not an independent security review of LexisAi. The practical product distinction is that the interface gathers and displays the request, while the server handles sensitive service-side work.

How usage limits are meant to work

Jerop describes a free-plan idea of 10 successful AI actions per month, with a higher usage limit for Pro. In that design, a successful generation increments the counter; failed requests should not consume an allowance, and the free allowance resets at the start of a new month.

Rank #2
Virtusx Jethro Wireless AI Mouse with Voice Typing & Meeting Recording
  • 【6-in-1 Smart AI Mouse】: The Virtusx Jethro brings wireless mouse control, voice typing and dictation, AI meeting recording, real-time translation, AI chat, and Smart Toolbar together in one everyday device. The Virtusx desktop app for Windows and macOS connects the mouse to its complete suite of online AI tools, letting you speak, record, translate, summarize, and create directly from your mouse.
  • 【Voice Typing, Dictation & Speech to Text】: Use the built-in microphone on the Jethro AI Mouse for fast voice typing, dictation, speech to text, and voice to text across emails, documents, messages, search boxes, and everyday work apps. Speak naturally instead of typing, then refine, rewrite, format, or continue your words for faster writing, communication, and productivity.
  • 【Real-Time Voice Translation in 100+ Languages】: Communicate across languages with real-time translation, voice translation, and multilingual voice typing. The Virtusx AI Mouse helps translate spoken conversations or selected text, transcribe speech, and turn voice to text for international meetings, travel, study, customer communication, and global teamwork.
  • 【AI Notetaker & Voice Recorder】: Capture meetings, lectures, interviews, conversations, and voice notes with the built-in microphone. Use Jethro as an AI voice recorder and audio recorder while Virtusx generates meeting transcription and speaker-labeled notes, then turns every recording into structured summaries, key takeaways, action items, and follow-up tasks.
  • 【One AI Chat, Multiple Leading Models】: Access ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and other currently supported AI models through Virtusx. Switch between models in one AI chat for research, writing, summarization, analysis, brainstorming, and everyday questions while keeping your work together in one place.

The distinction between successful and failed actions is consequential: users should not lose quota for an unsuccessful request. These are the plan and accounting rules described in the build account, not confirmation of LexisAi’s current commercial terms or available limits.

Why paid access is verified on the server

Jerop says the frontend should not decide whether someone has Pro access. The described sequence is payment initialization, user completion of the payment, server-side transaction verification, subscription activation, and then access to Pro features.

Jerop reports using Paystack, with Kenyan currency and mobile-money and card payment options. The account does not establish current pricing, processor configuration, or whether each payment method is available today. The engineering principle in the story is narrower: paid access follows server verification rather than a status the browser can simply claim.

Why unsupported AI output is still a product problem

Jerop gives the example of a summarizer inventing a date, company claim, statistic, or event that does not appear in the source document. The stated direction is to make LexisAi more grounded and explicit about what information is available. The account does not report a hallucination rate, test protocol, or proven fix, so this is an ongoing reliability concern rather than a solved capability.

Jerop’s broader lesson is that a model response is only one part of a finished feature: “An AI feature isn’t finished just because the model produces an answer.”

The difficult work around the AI call

The problems Jerop lists span the surrounding application as well as generation itself: API errors, authentication and payment verification, usage tracking, React issues, caching, service workers, production builds, environment variables, frontend/server boundaries, streaming responses, and preventing unsupported AI claims.

Jerop says the architecture is still being improved while describing the product as live. Those are self-reported status statements; the account does not provide current product documentation or a version-specific implementation snapshot.

What the build account shows

  • Keep sensitive API work off the client: the described design places API-related logic on the server.
  • Define quota in terms users can understand: the free-plan concept counts successful actions, excludes failed requests, and resets monthly.
  • Verify payment before granting paid features: the server checks the transaction before activating a subscription.
  • Treat unsupported claims as a product reliability issue: Jerop identifies grounding as a concern still requiring engineering attention.
