That makes a client-side design useful for payloads such as Wi-Fi credentials or contact details. It does not, by itself, prove that an entire website sends nothing to servers; analytics, third-party scripts, uploads, or hosted dynamic-code features may still transmit data.
What “fully client-side” means
The important architectural boundary is the QR payload. In a local-generation flow, the browser takes the supplied text, encodes it as a QR symbol, and renders the symbol without calling a QR-generation endpoint. A browser QR library such as qrcode documents browser use and methods including toCanvas and toDataURL.

This describes a viable implementation pattern, not a claim about a particular framework, dependency version, deployment, or tested application. Those details depend on the project. A client-side interface alone is not evidence that no payload is transmitted: the rest of the deployed page and its optional features matter too.
How the local generation flow works
- Take the user’s input. The browser receives the text or destination to encode.
- Encode it in JavaScript. A QR library converts the input into the symbol’s encoded data. The
qrcodepackage documents browser-side use, but its exact options and behavior are package-specific; check the version used by an implementation. - Render the symbol. A browser API such as the library’s
toCanvasmethod draws the QR code to an HTML canvas. - Offer an export. The canvas can be turned into an image for download or use elsewhere. Exporting is distinct from encoding and has its own browser constraints.
This path needs no QR-generation API. Whether the page works offline is a separate question: its JavaScript and other required assets must be available locally, and offline behavior must be tested rather than inferred from local encoding.

Why avoid a backend for generation?
Sending the payload to a generation server is unnecessary when the browser can encode and render it. Keeping that particular step local reduces the exposure of potentially sensitive input—such as a Wi-Fi password or personal contact data—to a QR-generation service. This is a data-flow benefit, not a blanket security guarantee.
Other parts of a site may still contact servers. Analytics, error reporting, third-party scripts, hosted fonts, optional uploads, and dynamic-code services can have their own data flows. A meaningful privacy statement therefore requires checking those components and what they transmit; local QR generation alone does not justify saying that nothing leaves the device. Static and dynamic QR codes are different products
A static QR code contains the text or destination encoded at generation time. Once printed, its contents are fixed: changing the destination means generating and distributing a new code. A hosted dynamic code generally encodes a redirect managed by a service, so the service can change where that redirect leads and may measure scans. Those features add service dependence and involve the provider’s data practices.

This is an architectural comparison, not a vendor-neutral audit of every QR product. The practical choice is whether changing destinations or measuring scans is worth the additional hosted service and its associated data handling.

Exporting the canvas safely
MDN documents HTMLCanvasElement.toDataURL() as a way to return a data URL for a canvas image. PNG is the required supported format; other formats depend on browser support. Because toDataURL() encodes the whole image into an in-memory string, MDN advises considering toBlob() with URL.createObjectURL() for large images. Canvas export can also be blocked if the canvas is not origin-clean—for example, after drawing cross-origin content without suitable permission. See MDN’s canvas export documentation.
For a QR code rendered entirely from local drawing operations, an image export is a natural handoff from the browser to the user. The chosen format and export method should match the intended use, and a data URL should not be treated as a universal solution for every image size or browser.

Error correction and scanability
QR libraries expose error-correction settings that trade payload capacity for tolerance to damage. The qrcode documentation describes this tradeoff; its settings are library documentation, not a guarantee that a code will scan under every size, contrast, printer, or device. A logo or other visual alteration can also affect scanability. Do not promise reliable scanning without testing the actual output under the conditions readers will use.

- Check the final printed size and contrast if the code will be printed.
- Test any logo or styling on the rendered code rather than assuming correction settings make it safe.
When a backend is worth adding
A backend is justified when the product needs capabilities that local static generation does not provide: changing a destination after printing, managing redirects, or collecting scan analytics. These features require hosted behavior and should be designed with clear data handling and service-availability expectations. If the need is simply to turn a fixed piece of text into a downloadable QR image, browser-side encoding avoids making a generation service part of that path.
