How I Built a Content Agent That Learns with Hindsight

A walkthrough of a Next.js content-strategy agent that recalls past experience before recommending, stores user verdicts, and keeps memory separate from generation.

A content-strategy agent should be able to give a different recommendation next week because of what happened last week. In a first-person build account published on DEV Community on September 29, 2026, Varshith describes ContentMind, a Next.js application that retrieves stored experience before it answers a question such as “What cybersecurity content should we create?” and then keeps the user’s feedback for later requests. The design goal, in the author’s words, is “getting the next recommendation to change because of what happened before.” The account is the author’s own description of how the system was built and how its example behaves. It is not an independent evaluation of the system’s accuracy or results. The original write-up is at https://dev.to/varshith_07e1cc3c6ee80c38/how-i-built-a-content-agent-that-learns-with-hindsight-2696.

What ContentMind is made of

ContentMind is a single Next.js codebase. According to the author, there is no separate backend service: Next.js API routes form the server-side boundary, and the browser never talks to the memory or model providers directly. The reported stack is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Frontend: Next.js with the App Router, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS.
  • Authentication and application data: Supabase, providing user authentication and a PostgreSQL database for application records.
  • Persistent memory: Hindsight Cloud, accessed through a small service layer that wraps the Hindsight client so the rest of the app does not call it directly.
  • Recommendation generation: Groq, which receives retrieved context and produces the language of the recommendation.

The article shows an example API base URL and environment variable names for these connections. Those details are as the author reported them; this account does not include a repository that readers can inspect independently.

Why memory and generation are kept apart

The most important design decision in the account is the split between two jobs. Hindsight stores and retrieves experience. Groq generates the recommendation text from whatever Hindsight returned. The model is not asked to remember anything on its own, and the system is not described as placing the entire historical dataset into every prompt.

That split is what makes the loop possible to reason about. When a recommendation is wrong, the developer can check two separate questions: did retrieval return the right memories, and did the model use them sensibly? The author presents this as an architectural choice rather than proof that it outperforms other approaches. The account reports no comparison against a full-history prompt or a model-only memory design.

How the learning loop runs

The loop has five stages. Each one maps to a specific piece of the stack.

  1. Retain. Historical posts, performance patterns, brand context, and feedback are written into Hindsight as memories. Seeded data goes in during setup; feedback goes in during normal use.
  2. Recall. When a user asks a strategy question, the app queries Hindsight for memories relevant to that question. The app retrieves a relevant subset rather than the whole history.
  3. Generate. The retrieved memories are passed to Groq as context, and Groq produces the recommendation.
  4. Return structured fields. The UI receives the recommendation broken into named fields: reasoning, suggested topics, suggested formats, target audience, a confidence value, and the memories that were used to produce it.
  5. Retain the verdict. The app records whether the user found the recommendation helpful, along with any optional comment and the original query. Because this is written back to Hindsight, later recalls can draw on it.

Stage five is what makes the system a learning loop in the author’s sense. Without it, the agent would only be a retrieval-augmented writer. With it, each answer the user accepts or rejects becomes an input to the next recall.

The seeded example: a synthetic brand history

To demonstrate the loop, the author built a synthetic historical dataset for a technology education brand called TechNova. The data is invented for illustration and is not drawn from a real account. Each historical post includes a topic, format, platform, publication date, views, likes, comments, shares, saves, an engagement rate, an outcome label, a summary, and a target audience.

  • 【16GB RAM & 1TB SSD with Upgrade Room】16GB DDR5 memory and a 1TB PCIe SSD deliver smooth out-of-the-box performance for multitasking, large file handling, and daily storage needs. With dual SO-DIMM slots and an M.2 2280 design, the system still leaves room to upgrade up to 64GB RAM and up to 4TB SSD as your needs continue to grow.
  • 【2 Year Warranty Support】Includes a 2-year manufacturer warranty and a 90-day hassle-free return window, with final assembly in the United States and after-sales replacement handled in the United States under this listing workflow. That added service clarity gives students, professionals, and home users more confidence when choosing a laptop for long-term daily use.

The USB-C setup also supports convenient power and display connectivity, helping reduce the hassle of slow charging and frequent outlet hunting during a busy day.

The seed process converts several kinds of input into retained memories:

  • brand profile information and audience preferences;
  • high-performing and low-performing patterns across the historical posts;
  • content gaps, meaning topics the brand has not covered;
  • selected individual posts, stored with their outcomes.

The author’s example recall screen reports 335 memories, 45 historical posts, and 12 audience signals. These are counts from the interface and the demonstration dataset. They describe the size of the example, not measured properties of any real audience or of the retrieval system’s performance.

What the example recommends for cybersecurity

In the synthetic TechNova history, practical cybersecurity demonstrations perform better than generic awareness posts. The recommendation the system generates from that pattern points toward hands-on, attack-and-defense material. The account gives examples of topics such as API security testing and cross-site scripting (XSS) testing, and of suggested topics such as penetration testing and SIEM implementation. Suggested formats include tutorials and hands-on guides.

These observations belong to the example dataset. They show how the agent reasons over the patterns it was given. They do not show what cybersecurity audiences actually respond to, and the account does not present them as general audience research.

Keeping one customer’s memory away from another’s

The author states that Supabase Row Level Security policies protect workspace data in the current application. For a larger deployment with several customers, the author recommends that the configurable Hindsight memory bank be scoped to the authenticated workspace or user. Without that scoping, separate customers could draw on the same agent memory.

This is a deployment consideration stated by the author, not a security audit. The account does not describe penetration testing of the isolation, and it does not claim the example is ready for production use with real customers.

Design alternatives the account implies

The account does not benchmark these choices, so the table below describes what each option means rather than ranking them.

  • Define feedback precisely. ContentMind stores a helpful or not-helpful verdict, an optional comment, and the original query. Decide in advance what a useful signal looks like, because the loop only learns from what it records.
  • Decide the scope before the first customer. The author’s recommendation to scope the memory bank per workspace or user is far easier to design in than to retrofit.
  • Keep the returned memories visible. Because the UI shows which memories informed each recommendation, a user or developer can see when a recommendation rests on weak or irrelevant history.

What the account establishes, and what it does not

The account establishes the architecture, the five-stage loop, the seeding approach, the structured output format, and the example behavior on a synthetic dataset. Those are described in the author’s own words and can be checked against the original post.

It does not establish how accurate the recommendations are, how fast the retrieval step runs, what the system costs to operate, or whether it improves results for a real brand. The account contains no independently measured benchmark, no business outcome, and no quotation from an outside expert or standards body. The author is identified only as Varshith, and the account does not state a professional role.

Read it as a worked design example. It is a clear description of one way to separate retrieval from generation and to write user verdicts back into memory, with its limits stated by the author and the evidence limited to a demonstration dataset.
