How Hydrogen Car Fuel Cells Use Catalysts to Make Electricity

A catalyst helps a hydrogen fuel-cell car convert stored hydrogen into electricity. Here’s how platinum fits into the process—and why better catalysts alone cannot make hydrogen cars widely accessible.

A catalyst helps a hydrogen fuel-cell car turn stored hydrogen into electricity. In the vehicle’s proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, platinum typically helps reactions separate hydrogen into protons and electrons; the electrons flow through a circuit to power the electric motor. The catalyst is a fuel-cell material, not a fuel additive or an owner-installed upgrade. Its cost, resistance to contaminants and durability matter—but catalyst advances alone cannot provide hydrogen, build fueling stations or make these cars available everywhere.

What a catalyst does in a hydrogen car

A fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) is an electric-drive vehicle: it stores hydrogen onboard and converts it to electricity in a fuel cell, which supplies power to an electric motor. It does not need to burn hydrogen in an engine to generate that electricity. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes PEM fuel cells as particularly suitable for vehicle applications. In this design, a catalyst helps the electrochemical reactions proceed. Platinum is a typical catalyst material, and its use affects fuel-cell cost and performance. How the PEM fuel-cell reaction makes electricity

A PEM fuel cell has an anode and a cathode separated by an electrolyte membrane. Hydrogen reaches the anode, while oxygen from air reaches the cathode. Catalyst-assisted reactions at the anode separate hydrogen into protons and electrons. The membrane allows protons to cross; electrons take a route through an external circuit, creating the electrical power used by the vehicle. At the cathode, oxygen combines with protons and electrons to form water. DOE: Types of Fuel Cells.

  1. Hydrogen enters the anode. The fuel-cell system directs stored hydrogen to the anode side.
  2. The catalyst aids separation. Hydrogen is split into protons and electrons.
  3. Electrons power the circuit. They flow outside the membrane, providing electrical power for the vehicle’s drive system.
  4. Protons cross the membrane. They reach the cathode, where oxygen participates in forming water.

Why platinum and catalyst durability matter

Platinum is valuable in PEM fuel cells because it can catalyze the reactions that produce electricity, but using it adds materials cost. DOE also notes that carbon monoxide can poison the typical platinum catalyst, reducing its effectiveness. A catalyst must keep working under vehicle operating conditions, so reducing the amount of platinum is not the only goal: activity, output and durability matter too. DOE’s technical-target material for PEM electrolysis explicitly cautions that loading reductions should not compromise performance or durability; electrolyzer targets are not fuel-cell catalyst-loading figures. Platinum degradation is an active materials challenge. A DOE Office of Science article published June 7, 2022, described research into why platinum degrades unevenly in fuel cells. That finding underscores why a promising catalyst needs to be judged not just by initial activity, but by how well it lasts. DOE Office of Science: Fuel-Cell Waste Reduction Goes Platinum.

What DOE figures do—and do not—show

DOE’s hydrogen and fuel-cell overview reports historical progress in fuel-cell materials and manufacturing. It says later versions used one-fifth the platinum of earlier versions, and reports high-volume automotive fuel-cell manufacturing cost reductions of more than 35% since 2008 and more than 80% since 2002. These are DOE-reported historical comparisons on an overview page whose date is not stated in the retrieved material; they are not current, universal figures for every vehicle or fuel-cell design. The same page reports more than 180 validated FCEVs and more than 3.6 million miles, which are DOE program figures—not a current global fleet count. DOE: Hydrogen and Fuel Cells.

Platinum demand depends on how adoption develops. In its 2023 Critical Materials Assessment, DOE presents scenario-dependent outlooks in which FCEVs account for 57% of demand in one high-penetration trajectory and 43% in one low-penetration trajectory by 2035. These are scenario shares, not guaranteed forecasts. DOE also notes that FCEVs do not contain catalytic converters, making FCEV growth and catalytic-converter demand interrelated in its analysis. What catalyst advances cannot solve

A lower-cost or more durable catalyst could help improve the fuel-cell system, but it does not settle whether hydrogen is produced affordably, delivered to stations or available where a driver needs it. Nor does a catalyst improvement by itself establish a vehicle’s full lifecycle emissions. DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center describes FCEV availability as limited but growing in certain markets; that is not a guarantee of local access. The cited material does not establish a current station count, vehicle inventory by location, current vehicle prices or a direct lifecycle-emissions comparison. DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center: Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles.

The practical takeaway is that the catalyst is one important component in a larger system. For fuel-cell cars to become a broadly usable option, progress in catalyst cost and durability must accompany hydrogen supply, delivery and fueling access.

  • The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
  • During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
