For ordinary seated viewing, aim to place the center of the TV screen level with the viewer’s eyes while they sit in their usual seat. Measure seated eye height from the floor rather than relying on a universal mounting height: people and seating differ.
How to find the right TV height
- Sit in the usual viewing position. Use the seat and posture you normally watch from.
- Measure seated eye height. Measure from the finished floor to the viewer’s eyes. Philips describes this as a way to determine TV placement: Philips TV placement guidance.
- Set the screen center near that height. The Japan Ergonomics Society’s Ergonomic Design Guidelines for Flat Panel Display Televisions says “television heights should be such that the viewer’s eyes are at an equal height to the center of the screen.” Its recommendation does not change with screen size or viewing distance. For example, if your seated eye height is 100 cm, a screen center near 100 cm applies the guideline. That is an illustration of the measurement method, not a universal target.

Why there is no single correct height from the floor
Floor height is only useful when tied to a particular viewer and posture. The Japan Ergonomics Society’s 2012 preferred-height tests reported approximate eye heights of 110 cm for chair sitting and 80 cm for floor sitting. Its field observations covered 393 viewers in 83 households; screen centers were roughly 60–100 cm high across those homes. These are sample observations, not a prescription for every room or household. The guideline’s central recommendation is to match the screen center to the viewer’s eye height.

Choose based on the room, installation constraints, and the adjustments you need—not on a different screen-height rule.

When a higher or lower position may make sense
Watching reclined or from bed
The ergonomics guideline’s basic placement recommendation addresses ordinary viewing while seated, not reclined viewing. If you usually watch from bed or in a reclined posture, your preferred screen position may differ. LG notes posture-specific exceptions and suggests considering an adjustable installation; that is a preference for a different viewing posture, not evidence that a high position is best for ordinary seated viewing. Above a fireplace
A fireplace often forces the screen above seated eye level. Philips cautions that heat and soot can harm electronics. If there is no alternative, check the TV manufacturer’s installation requirements and consider a mount that tilts the screen toward the viewing position. A tilt can change the viewing angle; it does not make an overly high position equivalent to placing the center at eye level.
Keep viewing distance separate from screen height
Screen-center height is based on seated eye height. Viewing distance is a separate decision, and recommendations can differ by source and resolution; do not use a distance formula to determine how high the TV should go. Before drilling or setting the TV in place
- Confirm the main viewer’s seated eye height in the actual viewing seat.
- Check the screen center—not the bottom edge—against that measurement.
- For wall mounting, confirm stud locations, VESA compatibility, the mount’s weight rating, and its adjustment range before marking holes.
- For a stand, confirm the base is stable and the screen center accounts for the TV’s dimensions and the furniture height.
- Leave appropriate clearance for a soundbar or other equipment, and follow the TV and mount manufacturers’ installation instructions.
