Mosman Park’s Camelot outdoor cinema returned in 2024 after noise restrictions and neighbour complaints made Luna Palace Cinemas’ conventional speaker system impractical. The workaround was a wireless-headphone system: audiences received supplied headphones at the gate, while the heritage venue could continue screening films without projecting sound across the surrounding neighbourhood.
The original comeback story is historical. Camelot’s current operator, Camelot Arts Club, still describes outdoor cinema as part of its arts program, but its page labelled “2026 Film Program” visibly contains many listings dated 2025. Treat any 2026 title or session as unconfirmed until it appears on a specific current event listing or is confirmed by the venue.
Why Camelot’s outdoor cinema was at risk
Camelot had been operating as an outdoor cinema for almost three decades. Luna Palace Cinemas had run the season for 22 years, making 2024 the planned 23rd season. Then noise complaints from several neighbours and newly implemented restrictions disrupted the usual open-air speaker arrangement. Luna Palace withdrew, leaving the future of the cinema uncertain.
The possibility that Mosman Park Memorial Hall’s cinema use might disappear prompted local support. PerthNow reported that a petition attracted more than 5,000 signatures, although that figure is reported rather than independently audited. The February 8, 2024 report is the source of the relaunch details: PerthNow’s original coverage.

The headphone solution
Instead of feeding a soundtrack through outdoor speakers, the relaunch plan supplied each patron with wireless, noise-cancelling headphones. The audience still watches the same large outdoor screen, but the film’s dialogue and music arrive directly at each seat.
Each viewer can adjust their own listening volume. Richard Evans, general manager of the Perth International Jazz Festival, said the arrangement could make screenings more immersive and reduce distractions such as wind, traffic and nearby activity. That is an organiser’s assessment, not an independently measured comparison of the two sound systems.
“Silent cinema” is therefore a playful description of the venue’s sound delivery, not a return to silent-era films. The 2024 program consisted of modern releases, heard through headphones rather than loudspeakers.

What changes for the audience
- Sound is more localised, reducing spill into neighbouring properties.
- Personal volume control can help with dialogue and soundtrack balance.
- The shared acoustic field changes: audience members no longer hear everyone’s reactions through one speaker system.
- Headsets have to be distributed, collected and maintained, and people who dislike over-ear headphones may find them uncomfortable.
The 2024 report described the equipment as wireless and noise-cancelling. The current FAQ confirms the continuing policy for outdoor screenings—headphones are compulsory and supplied at entry—but does not repeat every technical specification.
Who organised the return?
The revival was a cooperative effort rather than a normal Luna Palace season.
- The Perth International Jazz Festival had recently become the hall’s tenant. Evans acknowledged that cinema was outside the organisation’s usual expertise but said preserving the community’s film venue mattered.
- The Town of Mosman Park supported the effort.
- Perth Festival artistic director Iain Grandage donated a specialised projector.
- Artrage, the producer associated with Fringe World and Rooftop Movies, helped with programming.
The plan was also broader than a short film season. The Perth International Jazz Festival said it wanted to develop the hall as an intimate live-music venue and stage music-film festivals after the cinema run.

The site also promotes a “Camelot Film Festival” and provides a page titled “2026 Film Program.” However, the visible entries include a December 2025 Christmas program and a February–April 2025 film season. That mismatch means the page alone does not establish an August 2026 screening calendar. Check the venue’s individual event listing or contact Camelot before relying on a date, film title, price or ticket link: Camelot Film Festival program page.
What visitors should expect
The current Camelot FAQ gives the following practical information. Exact times can vary by event, so the individual listing takes precedence.
| Question | Current information |
|---|---|
| Where is it? | Memorial Hall, 16 Lochee Street, Mosman Park, WA 6012 |
| When should you arrive? | Doors are stated as opening at 6:00pm; screenings are stated as starting at 7:30pm, subject to event-specific variation. |

| Where do you sit? | Inflatable chairs and beanbags are first come, first served. You may bring your own chair, cushion or blanket. |

| What is the refund rule? | Tickets are generally non-refundable and non-exchangeable unless the session is cancelled. |
| How do you get there? | On-street parking is available nearby, with a dedicated car park on Solomon Street behind the building. Mosman Park train station is under a 10-minute walk away. Bus route 107 serves Victoria Street at stops 19648 and 19642. |
| What are the age requirements? | Valid identification is required; under-18s must attend with a parent, guardian or responsible adult. |
Weather, accessibility and other questions to check
An outdoor screening can be affected by cold, wind, rain, damp seating or projection conditions. The FAQ advises warm layers but the available venue information does not set out a complete weather-cancellation policy. Check the event listing or contact Camelot before travelling in poor weather.

The published information also does not establish whether Camelot offers captions, hearing-loop support, hearing-aid-compatible headsets, alternative audio access, reserved wheelchair seating, or a formal accessibility policy. Those are reasonable questions to ask the venue directly rather than assumptions to make about a headphone-based event.
Visitors should also follow the venue’s instructions for returning the supplied equipment after the film. The sources confirm distribution at entry but do not publish a detailed collection or headset-maintenance procedure.
Why the relaunch matters
Camelot’s headphone model shows how a local cultural venue can adapt instead of abandoning an established program. It addresses the specific problem that ended the speaker-based season, while the hall’s broader Camelot Arts Club identity links film with music, studios and community use.
It does not, by itself, prove that the noise dispute has been permanently resolved, that resident satisfaction has been measured, or that the outdoor cinema is running a full 2026 season. What is established is narrower: headphones provided a way to bring screenings back in 2024, and the current venue continues to describe outdoor cinema as one of its activities.
