Those partnerships are essential, but they are not necessarily fixed: a broad study comparison found that worms can acquire new bacterial partners and sometimes lose existing ones while communities remain similar among members of the same worm species.
How can a worm with no gut survive?
The marine worms described by the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology lack a mouth, gut and excretory organs. Bacteria living beneath their skin perform functions that support the worms’ nutrition and help manage waste. The animals therefore rely on microbial partners for basic life processes, rather than digesting food through a conventional digestive system.

What did the study compare?
Researchers analyzed nearly 250 worms representing 63 species from 17 locations. The samples had been collected over three decades of expeditions. The institute says technical innovations made it more feasible to analyze individual worms, including animals smaller than a pinhead. These figures describe the scope of the study, not a measured effect or a statistic about how often partners change.

The institute’s October 6, 2026 summary describes the findings and study scope.

How stable are the worms’ bacterial communities?
Similar communities within a species
Worms belonging to the same species tended to carry similar bacterial communities, including when they came from distant ocean regions. The reported pattern suggests that host species identity is an important part of the partnership; geography alone did not erase the similarities described by the institute.
Different communities among host species
Different worm species often hosted different bacterial communities. Even closely related worm species could have substantially different partners. The institute suggests these contrasts may reflect locally adapted communities and the differing needs of their hosts, but the summary does not establish a specific cause.

How can an essential partnership still change?
Dependence does not require a permanent, unchanging set of partners. The researchers report that worms regularly acquire new symbionts and sometimes lose existing ones. In Anna Mankowski’s words, “The worms regularly take up new symbionts, occasionally they also drop some,”

The study’s summary presents both patterns, rather than suggesting that every individual keeps the same microbes or that every worm has an entirely unique community.

Why might changing partners help?
The researchers propose that changing partners could give worms access to a broader range of food and energy sources. Bacteria with different abilities might be useful in habitats where nutrients are scarce. Prof. Dr. Nicole Dubilier, head of the institute’s Department of Symbiosis, said, “This can be very useful, especially in habitats where nutrients are sometimes scarce.”
This is a proposed explanation for the possible benefit of turnover, not a demonstrated causal mechanism. The institute’s accessible summary does not name the symbiont taxa, provide detailed statistical tests or effect sizes, or spell out a full limitations section. It therefore supports the broad pattern of similarity, species-level differences and partner turnover, but not more specific claims about which microbes do what or how often any particular exchange occurs.
