Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn GTA, you change a vehicle’s radio by selecting a station through that game’s driving controls. There is no single button combination that applies to every GTA title, platform, and input device: check the game’s Controls settings for the mapping that applies to your setup. In Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online on PC, you can also add eligible audio files to the Self Radio station.
What the vehicle radio does
The radio is an in-game listening option associated with vehicles. While driving, you can choose among the stations available in that title. In Grand Theft Auto V, the official game-help page describes both a radio wheel for choosing a station and a quick-change action. Those descriptions establish the kind of controls to look for, but the manual material does not provide a complete, legible set of button labels for every platform. Check the Controls menu in your game rather than relying on a button combination found for a different version or controller. Xbox/Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto V – Game Help.

Think of station selection and custom music as separate features. The first is the game’s regular in-vehicle radio operation. Self Radio is a custom-music station documented for GTAV and GTA Online on PC; its setup involves adding files and scanning them in the game’s Audio settings. The precise interface and station lineup can differ across games and versions, so instructions for Self Radio should not be assumed to apply to another GTA title or platform.

- Open the game’s Controls settings. Find the vehicle or radio controls for your platform and input device. The labels and mappings can vary by game and setup.
- Use the radio-selection control while in a vehicle. In GTAV, the game-help material describes a radio wheel and a quick-change action. Use the on-screen prompt or the mapping shown in your Controls settings to select the appropriate action.
- Choose a station or use the quick-change action. The wheel is useful when you want to see and select a particular station; a quick-change action is for moving between stations without opening the wheel. The exact behavior and assigned input are game-specific.
- If nothing plays, check that a station is selected. A radio can be silent if no station is selected. For the separate San Andreas PC surround-sound case, see the troubleshooting section below.
This approach is safer than memorizing a universal key or button: official support material documents different controls in different contexts. For example, Rockstar’s San Andreas PC troubleshooting page gives Insert and Delete for switching stations, but those keys are specific to that PC support context—not a general control for the series. - Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
If you are using a controller, keyboard, or another input setup, treat the current game’s displayed mapping as the authority. A guide for a different platform may describe a different input, and even a control description for GTAV does not supply a complete mapping for every edition. The radio wheel and quick-change descriptions help identify the two kinds of actions to look for: selecting from the available stations, or changing stations directly. They are not a promise that every GTA game exposes the same interface.
Set up custom music in GTAV or GTA Online on PC
Rockstar’s Self Radio instructions apply to GTAV and GTA Online on PC. They call for non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A audio files in the game’s User Music directory. You can instead use shortcuts in that directory that point to folders containing your music. The documented default path is DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VUser Music. These instructions are not a general custom-music procedure for console editions or other GTA games. Rockstar Support, “How to Play Custom Music on the Self Radio station in GTAV and GTA Online on PC”, last updated April 30, 2024.
1. Put eligible files in the User Music folder
- On the PC, open
DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VUser Music. - Copy non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files into that folder. If your files are elsewhere, Rockstar’s instructions also allow shortcuts in User Music that point to folders containing the audio.
- Keep the distinction between a shortcut and the audio itself in mind: the game needs to be able to locate supported files through the User Music directory or the folder shortcut placed there.
File eligibility matters: the official instructions name those three formats and specify that the files must be non-DRM. A file in another format, or a protected file, falls outside the documented setup. If Self Radio does not show the tracks you expect, verify the file format and DRM condition as well as the folder location before changing playback modes.
2. Scan the folder in the game
Rockstar says automatic scanning can run at startup. You can also request a scan from Settings > Audio, choosing either Quick Scan or Full Scan. If you have just added music and do not see it in Self Radio, use one of those scan options rather than assuming the files were imported immediately. The support instructions identify both scan choices but do not specify a different set of supported file formats for each.

- Includes the complete grand Theft Auto V story experience
The scan is the step that tells the game to look for music in the designated location; placing files there and choosing a playback mode are distinct parts of the setup. If you use a folder shortcut, make sure it is in User Music and points to the folder containing the tracks. Then run a Quick Scan or Full Scan from the Audio settings if an automatic scan has not made the music available. Rockstar documents both scan choices without stating that one changes the supported formats or playback behavior.
3. Choose how Self Radio plays the tracks
In Settings > Audio, select one of the documented Self Radio playback modes. The modes change the listening experience, not the eligibility requirements for the files:
| Mode | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Sequential | Plays tracks in folder order. | When you want the files to follow their listed order. |
| Shuffle | Plays tracks randomly. | When you want a randomized sequence without the radio-style interruptions described for Radio mode. |
| Radio | Plays tracks randomly with in-game radio adverts and DJ banter between tracks; songs cannot be skipped. | When you want custom tracks presented more like a radio station. |
Rockstar describes Radio mode as playing audio files randomly with adverts and DJ banter between tracks, with no song skipping. If the inability to skip is inconvenient, use Sequential or Shuffle instead. The official support page does not say that the three modes use different file requirements. Rockstar Support’s Self Radio instructions.
In practical terms, Sequential is the predictable option when you want folder order, Shuffle is the random option without the described Radio-mode adverts and DJ links, and Radio prioritizes the feel of a broadcast. The trade-off in Radio mode is explicit: tracks play randomly, interruptions come between them, and you cannot skip songs. Choose a mode based on how you want to listen rather than expecting a change in file compatibility.

Why GTA controls and radio details are not interchangeable
“GTA radio” covers different games, editions, and platforms. A control documented for one PC release does not establish the control for a console release, and a troubleshooting fix for one title should not be generalized to every game. Use the specific title’s Controls settings first, then use support instructions that explicitly match both the game and platform.
| Game or context | Platform and control evidence | Radio feature or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | Game-help material describes a radio wheel and quick-change action; a full platform-by-platform mapping is not stated in the cited manual extract. | Regular vehicle station selection. Self Radio setup is separately documented for PC. |
| GTAV / GTA Online Self Radio | PC instructions use the User Music directory and Settings > Audio scanning and playback options. | Custom music with Sequential, Shuffle, and Radio modes. |
| Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas support case | Rockstar’s PC troubleshooting article identifies Insert/Delete for station switching in that context. | It addresses vehicle music inaudible on some surround-sound setups; it does not establish a series-wide audio rule. |
The comparison is deliberately limited to what the official material establishes. It does not describe the games’ underlying audio architecture, nor does it establish a series-wide rule for what happens to music after a player exits a vehicle.
There is also a version distinction within GTA Online: station lineups can change with updates. A list in an older guide can be useful for understanding what was available at that time, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed current inventory. Rockstar’s update notes provide a concrete example of lineup changes, described below; they do not amount to a complete station list for every later version.

Rockstar documents a particular issue in San Andreas on PC when the computer is configured for surround sound. In a setup with 5.1 or more speakers, vehicle radio music may be routed to the center speaker. With only two speakers, Rockstar says there may be no channel through which that music can be heard. The support page recommends matching the PC’s speaker configuration to the attached system and ensuring that a station is selected. It also says to press Insert or Delete to switch stations after the game has loaded. Rockstar Support’s San Andreas troubleshooting instructions, last updated April 14, 2024.

- This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box.
- Confirm a station is selected. Use Insert or Delete as described on that San Andreas PC support page.
- Check the PC speaker configuration. Set it to match the speaker system actually attached to the computer, as Rockstar advises.
- Keep the scope narrow. This is a documented San Andreas PC issue, not a diagnosis for every GTA game, platform, or reason for silence.
The surround-sound explanation is specific and easy to misapply. It concerns the documented PC case in San Andreas, where the music may be sent to the center speaker on a 5.1-or-greater setup, or have no channel to play through with two speakers. It is not evidence that silence in GTAV, GTA Online, or another platform has the same cause. In this case, Rockstar’s advice is to match the computer’s speaker configuration to the connected speakers and make sure a station is selected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.GTA Online station lists can change
A station list found in an older guide may describe a past version rather than the current lineup. Rockstar’s GTAV Title Update 1.52 Notes document station changes in December 2020: the notes list Still Slipping Los Santos and The Music Locker among stations added in one entry, and K.U.L.T 99.1 FM and Still Slipping Los Santos in another, alongside updates to Worldwide FM and FlyLo FM. The update notes are evidence that the lineup has changed over time, not a complete current station list. Rockstar Support, “GTAV Title Update 1.52 Notes (PS4 / Xbox One / PC)”; the relevant entries are dated December 2020, and the page was last updated December 18, 2023.
For day-to-day use, the practical distinction is simple: select a regular station with the controls for your title and platform, or use the PC-only Self Radio workflow documented for GTAV and GTA Online if you want to play supported files from your own collection. The documented Self Radio steps call for no separate radio hardware or paid audio service; they use eligible files and the game’s own folder and Audio settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you change the radio station while driving in GTA?
Use the radio controls for the specific game and input device. In GTAV, official game-help material describes a radio wheel and a quick-change action, but the available mapping is not complete for every platform. Check the game’s Controls settings instead of relying on one universal button combination.

How do I play my own music in GTA 5?
For GTAV or GTA Online on PC, place non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files in DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VUser Music, or place shortcuts there that point to folders containing music. In Settings > Audio, run a Quick Scan or Full Scan if needed, then choose a Self Radio playback mode. This workflow is documented for PC, not as a general console procedure.
Why can’t I skip a song on Self Radio?
That is expected in Radio mode. Rockstar says this mode plays tracks randomly with radio adverts and DJ banter between tracks and does not allow song skipping. Choose Sequential or Shuffle if you prefer a mode without that documented no-skip limitation.
What file types does GTAV Self Radio support?
Rockstar’s PC instructions list non-DRM MP3, WMA, and M4A files. The instructions do not describe different file-format requirements for Quick Scan versus Full Scan.

Why is vehicle radio music inaudible in San Andreas on PC?
Rockstar documents a surround-sound issue in San Andreas on PC: with 5.1 or more speakers, music may be routed to the center speaker; with only two speakers, there may be no channel through which it can be heard. Rockstar advises matching the PC speaker configuration to the attached system and ensuring a station is selected. This is a title- and platform-specific troubleshooting case.
Does every GTA game have the same radio stations?
No single current lineup is established across the series. Rockstar’s GTAV Title Update 1.52 notes document station additions and updates in December 2020, so GTA Online lists can be version-sensitive. Check the lineup in your game rather than treating an older list as complete.
The Bottom Line
Use your game’s Controls settings to change stations; there is no universal GTA radio button. For custom tracks, Rockstar’s documented Self Radio setup is for GTAV and GTA Online on PC: use non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files in User Music, scan them in Settings > Audio, and select Sequential, Shuffle, or Radio. Keep the San Andreas surround-sound fix and GTA Online station lists within their specific title, platform, and version contexts.
