If you want to meet people alongside friends, Tinder is the only one of these three services whose cited official materials document romantic matching in pairs and groups. Its Double Date pairs two friends with another pair; Group Hangouts is designed for groups of at least three. Hinge and Bumble Date focus on individual dating, while Bumble BFF’s groups are for friendship—not romantic group matching.
The practical difference is how friends participate: before matching on Tinder’s group features, or not as a documented part of matching on Hinge and Bumble Date. Tinder’s group options are tests with phased, market-specific availability, so check the app to see whether either appears where you live.

What counts as a group dating app?
Here, “group dating” means that you bring one or more friends into the discovery process, match with another pair or group, and can chat or make plans together. That is different from matching one-to-one and later creating a group chat, or using a friendship app to find people for social outings.
By that definition, Tinder documents two formats: Double Date for pairs and Group Hangouts for groups of at least three. The reviewed Hinge and Bumble Date materials describe individual dating features, not an equivalent romantic group-matching flow.

How the apps compare
| App or feature | Who joins before matching? | How matching and chat work | Availability and cost notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tinder Double Date | You and one friend form a pair. | Swipe on other pairs. A mutual match opens a four-person group chat; either person can also start an individual direct message. | Free test in select markets. Tinder says paid features such as Boosts and Super Likes are not compatible during the test. |
| Tinder Group Hangouts | A group of at least three friends. | After setting an activity and time, groups can discover and swipe on other groups. A mutual group match opens a group chat; members may also connect one-to-one. | Free test in select markets, rolling out in phases. Tinder says details may change during testing; paid features such as Boosts and Super Likes are not compatible during the test. |
| Hinge | Individuals create profiles and match individually. | Members like or comment on a specific part of a profile. Hinge describes recommendations based on preferences and app activity. Date Ideas helps users signal preferred first-date activities; it is not group matching. | Core app use is free; Hinge+ and HingeX add options. The reviewed materials do not document romantic group matching. |
| Bumble Date | Individuals use dating features. | The reviewed materials describe discovery, paid filters and visibility features, and safety tools; they do not establish a Bumble Date group-matching equivalent. | Paid options and feature availability vary. No current market-specific prices are established here. |
| Bumble BFF | People seek friends or social groups. | Group discovery and hangouts are presented in a friendship and community context, not as romantic group matchmaking. | Do not treat BFF group features as a Bumble Date group-dating mode. |
What Tinder’s two group options actually do
Double Date: two friends at a time
Double Date lets you team up with a friend and swipe on other pairs. Tinder says a mutual pair match opens a four-person chat, with the option to move into an individual direct message. Users can create up to three pairs, according to Tinder’s Help Center description. It is a pair-first format rather than a larger group planning flow.
Group Hangouts: three or more friends
Group Hangouts is the larger-group option. Tinder says a group needs at least three members and must choose a dedicated activity and time before it can discover other groups. The feature can show multiple members in a group profile; a mutual match opens a conversation between the groups. The Help Center gives mini-golf, karaoke, or a night out as examples of an activity.

Tinder announced on September 30, 2026, that Group Hangouts was rolling out in phases, starting in the U.S. and select markets, with timing and availability varying by market. Its announcement says every participant needs a Tinder account and profile and must choose to join. Check Tinder in your market rather than assuming the feature is available to every account.

For both Double Date and Group Hangouts, Tinder describes a free test in select markets. Tinder says paid features including Boosts and Super Likes do not work within these tests. Test details—including invites and group limits—may change.

How Hinge and Bumble differ
Hinge: individual matching, with more profile detail
Hinge says every match begins when someone likes or comments on a specific part of a profile. It emphasizes detailed profiles and prompt answers, and says it follows up after members exchange phone numbers to learn how dates went. Its recommendation system, by Hinge’s account, combines stated preferences with app activity. Hinge says a deep-learning system introduced in 2025 aims to better understand whom a person may like and who may like them back; that is the company’s description, not independent proof of recommendation performance.
On April 22, 2026, Hinge announced Date Ideas, which lets users highlight three preferred first-date activities. Hinge said 54% of daters in the feature test felt more confident asking someone out. That is a company-reported test result about confidence, not evidence of improved relationship outcomes. Date Ideas can help a match discuss plans, but the announcement does not describe matching with another pair or group.
Rank #4
Bumble Date: individual dating plus safety tools
Bumble’s reviewed dating materials emphasize individual discovery, optional paid features, and safety. Bumble lists in-app voice and video calls that do not require sharing a phone number or email, Photo Verification, ID verification, Private Detector for potentially explicit images, block and report tools, unmatching, and Deception Detector with human moderation. These are app controls, not guarantees about a person’s identity, conduct, or background.
Recommended Free Tools
Bumble describes Boost, Premium, and Premium+ as optional paid plans. Premium includes features such as seeing who has liked a profile, advanced filters, Incognito Mode, and Travel Mode. Availability and commercial terms can vary, so check the current offer in the app or your market’s official Bumble information.

Bumble BFF is for friendship
Bumble BFF materials describe finding or joining groups and social hangouts for friendship and community. That may suit someone looking for company, but it is not evidence of a romantic group-matching feature in Bumble Date.

A group match means more people can see what is shared in the chat and may attend an eventual outing. Tinder advises members to get consent before sharing private details such as contact information, and to get group consent before introducing sexual topics. Tinder also says participants must be at least 18 and follow its Community Guidelines; violations can lead to action against one or more accounts.
Tinder says its existing moderation and safety features apply to Group Hangouts, including Face Check where available. Its announcement says members can leave a conversation without leaving their friend group, and can block or report others. Bumble also documents blocking and reporting. Verification and moderation tools can be useful, but they cannot guarantee safety. For any first meeting, choose a public place, arrange your own way to leave, and avoid sharing sensitive personal information until you are comfortable.
Which format fits your plans?
- Choose Double Date if you want to participate with one friend and match with another pair in a four-person chat.
- Look for Group Hangouts if you want a group of at least three to match around a planned activity and time—and the test is available in your market.
- Choose Hinge if you prefer individual matching through detailed profiles and prompts, with date-planning cues rather than friend-group matching.
- Choose Bumble Date if you want individual dating and value its documented communication and safety tools; the reviewed materials do not establish a romantic group mode.
- Use Bumble BFF if your goal is making friends or joining social groups, not matching romantically as a group.
There is no established head-to-head evidence here showing that one of these apps produces better dates or relationships. Tinder’s internal testing announcement said 90% of Double Date users were under 30, and reported 35% more messages exchanged by Double Date matches in 2025; Tinder did not provide the comparison methodology in the cited passage. Those company-reported figures describe its testing, not a general population or a comparative success rate against Hinge or Bumble.
