GPS jamming can make a device lose satellite-based location; spoofing can make it show a plausible but incorrect position or time. Phones may draw on other location inputs, while apps and drones respond according to their software, settings, and available signals—so neither a missing location nor a safe drone return is guaranteed.
GPS jamming and spoofing are different problems
GPS is one satellite navigation system within the broader GNSS category. Satellites broadcast reference signals one way; they do not receive a phone’s location or track it. A receiver calculates an estimated position from signals it receives, sometimes alongside other inputs.

Jamming can make location unavailable
A stronger signal in the relevant frequency range can overwhelm weaker satellite transmissions. A receiver may then lose its satellite fix or be unable to calculate a location. That does not mean every device will show no location: some phones and services can use other available sources.

Spoofing uses false satellite-like signals that may lead a receiver to calculate an incorrect position or time. Unlike a simple loss of signal, the result may look like a usable location even though it is wrong. A wrong-looking map alone does not prove spoofing, and ordinary users should not assume a phone can reliably identify it.

Interference is not necessarily malicious. GPS.gov also identifies nearby-band radio emissions, unintentional sources, and naturally occurring space weather as possible causes. A location problem by itself does not establish what caused it.
What happens to a phone’s location
A phone’s displayed position is not necessarily based on GPS alone. Google says Android devices with Google Play services may use Location Accuracy to combine GPS with Wi-Fi access points, cellular towers, and available sensors such as accelerometers, barometers, and gyroscopes. The actual inputs and results depend on the device, available signals, and settings.

- If satellite reception is disrupted, other available inputs may still contribute to an estimated location.
- If false satellite signals affect the receiver, the position or time it supplies may be incorrect.
- If the phone cannot obtain enough useful information, its location may be unavailable, delayed, or less accurate.
These are possible outcomes, not a uniform response across Android phones or other devices. Google’s Android guidance describes Location Accuracy for devices with Google Play services; it does not establish that every phone uses the same inputs or can detect interference.
How navigation apps can be affected
Apps use location information supplied by a device and may combine it with app-specific data. Google’s Android developer documentation says GNSS jamming can prevent a phone from computing location, while spoofing can fool a receiver into a different position or time and confuse mapping and navigation apps. The app’s behavior depends on the information it receives and its own design.

A GPS problem is not the same as losing cellular service. Satellite signals are broadcast one way, while phones may also estimate location from wireless networks. A phone can have working mobile service but poor GNSS-derived location, or it may show an estimate influenced by other available inputs. Neither cellular connectivity nor a map display by itself confirms that the position is correct.
Why a drone may not return safely
Consumer-drone behavior is model-, firmware-, configuration-, and situation-dependent. A return-to-home feature should not be treated as a guarantee that a drone can navigate safely when GNSS information is missing or unreliable.

Return-to-home has prerequisites
DJI’s support material describes its Failsafe Return to Home behavior as requiring a recorded home point, a good GNSS signal, and a functioning compass. Its documented trigger involves loss of the remote-controller link after a specified interval, with details that differ across product documentation.
A lost controller link and GNSS interference are separate problems. A link-loss failsafe that depends on navigation still needs the required navigation conditions; losing the link does not itself ensure the drone can return. The cited DJI conditions apply to the documented DJI behavior, not to every drone. Check the exact model’s instructions and configured failsafe behavior rather than assuming it will return, hover, or land under interference.

Aviation effects are broader than a map error
Aircraft systems can depend on GNSS for more than a moving-map display. The FAA’s Aeronautical Information Manual warns that GPS interference can affect GPS navigation, performance-based navigation, terrain awareness and warning, ADS-B outputs, clocks, and other position-dependent functions. These are aviation-system risks; they should not be assumed to describe how a phone or consumer drone behaves.
The FAA’s GPS and GNSS Interference Resource Guide, last updated December 8, 2025, describes possible spoofing clues including disagreement between navigation positions, unusual differences between ground speed and true airspeed, time or date shifts, spurious terrain alerts, and deviation in a GNSS-based position. Its guidance is advisory and emphasizes aircraft-specific procedures and manufacturer instructions. Pilots should follow applicable aircraft guidance, cross-check position with conventional navigation aids when available, be prepared to use appropriate alternate procedures, and report observed anomalies to air traffic control.
What to do if location or navigation seems wrong
For a phone or navigation app
- Check whether the problem is limited to one app, one device, or a wider service; do not assume interference from a single bad location reading.
- Follow your device manufacturer’s and wireless provider’s troubleshooting recommendations. GPS.gov advises contacting the wireless provider first and checking equipment and connectivity.
- If suspected radio interference remains, civilian users in the United States can report it to the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center and/or the FCC, as GPS.gov advises.
For pilots
Use the applicable aircraft flight manual, manufacturer instructions, and FAA procedures. FAA guidance calls for appropriate alternate means and prompt reports of observed anomalies to ATC; the right actions depend on the aircraft and route.

GPS.gov says consumers cannot legally use signal jammers in the United States, and that their use, sale, and marketing are illegal. A jammer is not a suitable diagnostic tool.
