Google Wallet treats payment cards and passes as different kinds of items, so they have separate ordering controls. Debit and credit cards use an “Edit card order” option; loyalty cards and transit passes are reordered by dragging. What you can add and how it works depend on your country, issuer, merchant, transit system, and device.
Payment cards and passes are organized separately
Google Wallet’s categories include debit and credit cards for payment, loyalty and gift cards for retail, and transit passes among tickets and passes. The distinction matters: payment cards do not use the same ordering gesture as passes, and Google’s pass-data guidance excludes payment methods such as debit and credit cards from passes data.

How to reorder cards and passes
Reorder debit and credit cards
- Open the Google Wallet app and swipe through your payment cards to the last card.
- Tap Edit card order, then arrange the cards in the order you want.
This changes the order of payment cards; it is not the documented control for loyalty or transit passes.

Reorder loyalty and transit passes
- Find the pass on the Wallet home screen.
- Touch and hold it, then drag it up or down.
Google documents this gesture for passes. Their presentation and available features can vary by device and region.

How to add each type of item
Add a payment card
- In Wallet, tap Add to Wallet, then Payment card and New credit or debit card.
- Scan the card or enter its details, accept the issuer’s terms, and complete any verification the issuer requests.
Your bank may also offer an Add to Google Wallet or Add to GPay option in its app or on its website. Adding a card to Wallet does not guarantee that it can be used for contactless payment: the issuer, card, location, and phone must meet Google’s requirements. Check your bank’s supported-card information if setup is declined; NFC, device software, and security requirements can also matter. Google’s card setup guidance explains the process and eligibility factors.
Add a loyalty card
In the Android app, tap Add to Wallet, select the relevant item type, and follow the prompts. A merchant may also provide an Add to Google Wallet option in its app, on its website, or in an email. The Wallet website supports only certain pass types and merchants; if a loyalty program is not listed there, that website route is unavailable for it. Add and use a transit pass
- In Wallet, tap Add to Wallet, choose Transit pass, and select a supported transit system. If the operator offers it, you can instead start from its Add to Google Wallet option.
- Follow the system’s instructions to add or load the pass. Some supported systems also offer features such as balance alerts or automatic reloading.
- At a reader, hold your phone to it. Depending on the system, you may need to unlock the phone and select the pass first.
Transit features and transfer steps are system-specific. Some passes can be active on only one device at a time, so follow the operator’s instructions before replacing or resetting your phone. See Google’s transportation guidance and check your transit operator’s instructions for your pass.

What happens when you change phones?
Do not assume every Wallet item will appear automatically on a new Android device. Google distinguishes account-synced loyalty and gift cards, event tickets, and boarding passes from payment cards and transit passes, which may not automatically transfer. Payment cards may require setup and issuer verification again; transit passes may require a system-specific move or reactivation, and some are limited to one device at a time. Check with your bank or transit operator before removing access to the old phone.

Can Wallet link related passes?
Some issuers can have related passes linked in Wallet, but users cannot create those links themselves. Google lets users turn automatic linking on or off; payment cards are among the items excluded from linked-pass behavior. The issuer controls whether related passes are available to link. Details are in Google’s linked and recommended passes guidance.
What Wallet’s pass-data controls cover
Google’s passes-data settings apply to saved passes and how they are used. They do not include payment methods such as debit and credit cards. Wallet’s controls cover personalization and whether passes are available across Google products; they are distinct from managing payment cards. See Google’s guidance on managing passes data.

Why a card or pass may not be available
- Region: Wallet features vary by country or region.
- Issuer or merchant: A bank must support the payment card, and a merchant must support the relevant loyalty pass route.
- Phone eligibility: Contactless payment can depend on NFC and device software or security requirements, even if a card is stored in Wallet.
- Transit system: The operator must support Wallet, and functions such as balance management or transfer depend on that system.
For a specific card or pass, confirm availability with the bank, merchant, or transit operator rather than assuming that Wallet’s general features apply everywhere. Google’s Wallet overview also describes variation in features and supported items.
