Google Maps estimates a trip by combining information about traffic now with historical traffic patterns to predict what conditions may be like later on the route. It uses those forecasts alongside factors such as road quality, road size and directness when choosing among routes. Google has not published a complete scoring formula for the consumer app, so the exact weight given to each factor is not public.
How does Google Maps know how long a trip will take?
An estimated arrival time has to account for more than how long the route would take at this moment. Traffic may change before a driver reaches a particular road, so Maps needs to estimate both current conditions and conditions farther ahead.

Google’s September 2020 explanation says aggregate location data from people navigating helps it understand current traffic. Maps then combines live conditions with historical traffic patterns and uses machine learning to forecast what drivers may encounter. Google’s explanation of traffic prediction and route selection describes the approach, but it is a company account from 2020 rather than a full or independently audited description of today’s system.

Historical patterns help estimate how a road usually moves at a particular time. Google’s example is a freeway that may typically be faster in the morning than in the late afternoon. Live conditions help adjust that baseline when traffic differs from its usual pattern.

Machine-learning forecasts
Google said its work with DeepMind used Graph Neural Networks to improve forecasts of slowdowns that have not started yet. The 2020 post named Berlin, Jakarta, São Paulo, Sydney, Tokyo and Washington, D.C. among places where it saw significant improvement. Those details describe the work Google reported at that time; they do not reveal the complete architecture of the current model.
How does Google Maps know there is traffic?
Google says aggregate location data from people navigating contributes to its understanding of current road traffic. In practical terms, the estimate is informed by the movement data Google describes, rather than by a single report from one driver. Google’s public explanation does not specify every data source or disclose the full process used to turn those inputs into a traffic estimate.

- 6” high-resolution navigator includes map updates of North America
- Hands-free calling when paired with your compatible smartphone with BLUETOOTH technology and convenient Garmin voice assist lets you ask for directions to places you want to go
- Road trip–ready features include the HISTORY database of notable sites, a U.S. national parks directory, Tripadvisor traveler ratings and millions of Foursquare POIs

For an ETA, current traffic is only part of the calculation: Maps also uses historical patterns and machine-learning forecasts to estimate conditions that may arise later on the trip.
Why did Google Maps choose this route?
Google says traffic forecasts can affect route selection. If it predicts heavy traffic in one direction, Maps may offer an alternative expected to have less traffic. Its public list of route considerations also includes road quality, road size and directness, authoritative information from local governments, and real-time feedback from users. Google’s route-selection explanation does not give these factors numerical weights or promise that every suggested route will be the fastest, shortest or best choice for every driver.

When comparing routes, consider the estimated time and distance alongside expected traffic, how direct the route is, and the type or quality of roads involved. Any route constraints selected by the user can matter too. The consumer app’s exact scoring formula is not public, so a route that looks longer on the map may still be chosen based on its estimated travel time or other considerations.
Is Google Maps ETA based on live traffic?
Yes, Google says its consumer Maps predictions use live traffic conditions together with historical patterns to forecast travel conditions. That does not mean the displayed ETA is a guarantee: it is an estimate based on conditions and predictions, and those can change during a trip.

Google reported in September 2020 that its ETA predictions had been “consistently accurate for over 97% of trips.” That is a company-reported figure from 2020; the article does not provide a methodology, and the number is not a current independent accuracy benchmark. The same Google post also reported usage figures and pandemic-era traffic context that should not be treated as current statistics.
What traffic settings are available in Google’s Routes API?
Google’s Routes API documentation describes three routing preferences for developers. These are API request options; Google’s documentation does not establish that users can select the same modes in the consumer Google Maps app.

| Routes API preference | How it treats traffic | Documented tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
TRAFFIC_UNAWARE |
Does not account for live traffic. For driving and two-wheeled motorized travel, the route and duration use the road network and average time-independent traffic conditions. | Does not use live traffic for the calculation. |
TRAFFIC_AWARE |
Incorporates live traffic. | Uses latency-reducing optimizations. |
TRAFFIC_AWARE_OPTIMAL |
Incorporates live traffic without most of those performance optimizations. | Can have higher latency. |
Google’s Routes API reference documents these preferences. Separate Routes data documentation distinguishes a traffic-aware duration from a static duration that omits traffic, and describes a traffic-model parameter under specified API request conditions. These developer details should not be read as a disclosure of the consumer app’s internal settings or exact route-ranking formula.
Where can you see Google Maps navigation and traffic?
Google documents using Maps navigation on a compatible car display through Android Auto, as well as navigating on a phone screen. Android Auto can show navigation, ETA and live traffic on the in-car display; a phone mount is only relevant if you choose to view Maps directly on the phone.
