GitHub can block a push when push protection detects a supported secret pattern in a covered push operation. Secret scanning looks for supported credential patterns and validates detections; it does not recognize every arbitrary string as a secret. The key distinction is timing: ordinary secret scanning can alert on a secret already in a repository, while push protection is a preventive check on certain attempts to send content to GitHub.
Whether a push is protected depends on the repository, the protection setting, the kind of push, and whether the credential matches a supported pattern. A block reduces the risk of accidental exposure, but it is not a guarantee that every credential will be caught.

Secret scanning and push protection do different jobs
GitHub describes secret scanning as pattern matching and validation to detect secrets. It checks for recognized credential types rather than treating every string that looks unusual as a credential. The result depends on the pattern, the token type, and the relevant scanning or push-protection settings. GitHub’s secret scanning detection scope reference lists what the service supports and the conditions that affect detection.
Secret scanning alerts are retrospective in the important sense that they can report secrets found in repository content. Push protection adds a preventive control: when it detects a supported secret during a covered push attempt, it blocks that push and explains the block. The credential may already exist in a developer’s local working tree or commit; the control is intended to stop covered content from reaching the protected repository, not to prevent a secret from ever being written locally.

That means “GitHub scans before a commit” is not an accurate general description. Push protection evaluates a push operation. A local commit can be made before the contributor tries to push it. Other scans and alert workflows serve a different purpose and may identify content after it has arrived.
Check availability and enable the right protection
GitHub has user-level push protection and repository-level push protection. They differ in who controls them, where they apply, and what happens when a contributor bypasses a block. Repository-level protection requires GitHub Secret Protection and is disabled by default; it can be configured at repository, organization, or enterprise level. User-level protection is an account setting on GitHub.com and is enabled by default for public repositories. See GitHub’s push protection overview for the current feature description.
| Mode | Who controls it and where it applies | Default and prerequisite | What a bypass means |
|---|---|---|---|
| User push protection | Applies to that GitHub.com user’s supported-secret pushes to public repositories. | Enabled by default on GitHub.com for public repositories; it is account-level protection. | A user-level bypass by itself does not create the same repository alert behavior; an alert is not created unless repository protection is enabled too. |
| Repository push protection | Can be configured at repository, organization, or enterprise level for repositories within that administration scope. | Requires GitHub Secret Protection and is disabled by default. | A writer may be able to provide a reason to bypass. GitHub records an alert and audit-log event and sends email notifications to relevant owners, security managers, and repository administrators watching the repository. |
Secret scanning availability is also tied to repository type and plan. GitHub runs secret scanning automatically and for free on public repositories. Organization-owned private and internal repositories need GitHub Secret Protection on GitHub Team or GitHub Enterprise Cloud. These availability details and the distinction between protection modes are described in GitHub’s documentation as accessed October 9, 2026; plan eligibility and settings can change, so confirm the current terms for the repository before relying on a setting.

To decide what to enable, first identify the repositories and contributors you need to cover. For public repositories, user protection provides an account-level safeguard for that user; repository protection is the relevant control when an organization needs centrally configured coverage and recorded bypass handling. For private or internal repositories, check that the organization has the required GitHub Secret Protection entitlement, then have an administrator configure protection at an appropriate level. The documentation establishes those configuration levels, but the exact settings interface can change, so use the current GitHub Docs instructions rather than relying on an old menu path.
Which push operations can be checked
GitHub lists push protection for command-line pushes, commits created in the GitHub UI, file uploads, REST API requests, and interactions with the GitHub MCP server for public repositories. The surface list is not a promise that every operation in every repository is covered: protection settings, repository eligibility, supported patterns, and preview status still matter.
- Command line: a push attempt can be blocked and the command-line output identifies detected secrets, subject to the limits described below.
- GitHub UI commits and uploads: GitHub documents protection for these public-repository surfaces. The dedicated UI upload guide describes upload protection as public preview, so do not treat that particular path as generally available without checking its current status.
- REST API and GitHub MCP server: these are listed among the public-repository push-protection surfaces. The feature overview does not establish that every third-party client, integration, or data-ingestion route is covered.
The practical question is not simply whether a file is being sent “to GitHub.” Ask whether the operation is one of the documented covered surfaces, whether protection is active for the relevant repository or user, and whether GitHub supports the credential pattern in question.

What happens when a push is blocked
For a command-line push, GitHub returns a message explaining that a supported secret was detected. The output can show up to five detected secrets at a time. From there, a contributor can remove the secret from the branch and try again, or follow the URL in the message to review any available allow or bypass options. GitHub’s command-line push protection guide describes this response flow.
Recommended Free Tools
- Read the block message. Use it to identify the detected credential type and the location or available details GitHub provides. Do not paste the suspected value into an issue, chat, or support request while investigating.
- Determine whether it is a real credential. Check the relevant source file and the credential’s owner or provider. If it is a false positive, use the documented bypass route if you are authorized and it is available. If it is a real or uncertain credential, treat it as exposed rather than assuming the block makes it harmless.
- Remove it from the branch before retrying. Edit the content that would be pushed so the credential is not included. If it is embedded in an earlier commit, changing only the latest file may not be enough: the branch’s pushed history can still contain the secret, so clean the affected history as appropriate before retrying.
- Use a bypass only for a reason that fits. Repository-level bypass asks the writer to specify a reason. GitHub closes alerts for “used in tests” and “false positive”; “I’ll fix it later” leaves the alert open. An organization can use delegated bypass to control who may bypass, approve requests, or be exempt.
- After a successful push, review any alert or notification. A push that is allowed through does not prove the credential is safe. Follow up on the alert according to whether the value is genuine and whether it reached repository history.
Repository-level bypasses are auditable: GitHub records an alert and an audit-log event, and notifies relevant owners, security managers, and repository administrators watching the repository. That makes bypass a tracked exception, not a way to erase the detection or certify the secret as safe. User-level protection alone does not create that repository alert when bypassed unless repository protection is also enabled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What push protection does not reliably catch
Push protection covers only a subset of the patterns that can generate secret-scanning alerts. Before assuming a token or key will be blocked, check GitHub’s supported-pattern and detection-scope reference for that credential type. No general detection-rate or efficacy statistic is established in the cited GitHub documentation; the documented thresholds below describe product behavior, not a guarantee of coverage.

Unsupported types and older formats
A credential can be real but outside the supported patterns for push protection. Older or legacy token formats may not be covered even when a newer format from the same provider is. GitHub uses Azure Storage Keys as an example: recently created formats are supported rather than legacy patterns. A detector built around supported patterns cannot be treated as a universal scan for every secret format.
Pattern pairs must be found together
Some credentials require two related pieces, such as an access key and its corresponding secret. GitHub detects a pattern pair only when both parts are found in the same file and are pushed to the repository. If the pieces are separated across files, this documented condition for pair detection is not met.

GitHub documents three operational limits that are easy to mistake for a clean result:
Best Value
| Condition | Documented behavior | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| A public-repository push is larger than 50 MB | The push is skipped by push protection. | A skipped check is not evidence that the content contains no credential. |
| A push contains more than 1,000 secrets that already have alerts | The push is not blocked. | Existing alerts do not mean a very large set of findings will all be re-blocked during that push. |
| More than five new secrets are detected | GitHub displays up to five newly detected secrets at a time. | The visible list may not represent every new finding in the push. |
| A scan of a large push times out | GitHub may scan after the push and create alerts. | A push that was not blocked can still be followed by a post-push alert. |
GitHub also notes that validity checks can make legacy GitHub tokens scoped to one GitHub environment undetectable in another environment’s scanning context. The token’s real-world validity and the environment in which scanning evaluates it therefore matter; absence of a block is not a reliable proof that a credential is invalid or absent.
If a real credential reaches the repository
When a genuine credential has been exposed, remove the source of exposure and remediate the credential itself promptly. GitHub’s guidance includes rotating or revoking the secret and removing it from repository commit history as appropriate. Deleting a value in a later commit does not erase it from earlier commits or make the original exposure disappear.
- Revoke or rotate the credential with the service that issued it. Removing a string from Git history does not invalidate a token that may already have been copied.
- Remove the secret from the affected content and clean the repository history where appropriate, following the repository’s incident-response process.
- Review the GitHub alert and relevant audit information, and notify the repository or security owners who need to assess exposure.
- Check for other occurrences or related credentials, especially when a paired credential or shared configuration was involved.
Push protection is one layer in secret hygiene. It lowers the chance that certain supported credentials will enter a protected repository through covered push operations; alert review and provider-side credential remediation remain necessary when detection occurs or exposure is suspected.
