Researchers can learn more about a strongly scattering material by measuring not just how brightly shaped light focuses through it, but how much that enhancement varies. In a 2026 optical experiment, unusually broad fluctuations pointed to long-range connections between light paths—even when the average focusing enhancement remained close to a correlation-free theoretical prediction.
How can light be focused through an opaque material?
Here, “opaque” means strongly scattering, not that no light can pass through. Light takes many routes through a disordered material; the waves emerging from those routes interfere to form a speckle pattern. Wavefront shaping adjusts the phase of incoming light so the waves combine more constructively at selected transmitted positions, increasing intensity there relative to the diffuse background.

In the study, the researchers measured the sample’s optical transmission matrix using phase-shifting interferometry, then formed sub-matrices from selected input segments and target output positions. For multiple targets, the maximum enhancement is represented by the largest eigenvalue of a focusing operator derived from a sub-transmission matrix.

The experiment used a densely packed zinc oxide nanoparticle layer on a cover slip, approximately 10 μm thick, with a transport mean free path of 1 μm. The researchers controlled between 100 and 1,000 input channels and considered between one and five output targets. These describe this experiment, not requirements for wavefront shaping generally. What are the “giant fluctuations”?
The enhancement factor is a distribution across wavefront-shaping configurations, not just a single brightness value. Its average describes typical focusing performance; its spread describes how much the measured enhancement varies. In the strongly scattering sample, that spread grew beyond the prediction of a finite-size, correlation-free random-matrix model as more input channels were controlled. The average enhancement, by contrast, could remain essentially unchanged.
That contrast matters: a mean value alone can make the observations look consistent with the baseline, while the distribution reveals a discrepancy. The paper does not establish a universal numerical multiplier for “giant” fluctuations across materials or channel configurations; it compares the observed spread with the model’s prediction.

Why do fluctuations reveal correlations?
The baseline is an exact finite-size prediction from a Laguerre–Wishart random-matrix ensemble. It accounts for a finite number of channels and predicts both the mean enhancement and its fluctuations when long-range mesoscopic correlations are negligible. That makes it a more appropriate comparison in this regime than a large-channel approximation.
In a strongly scattering medium, multiple scattering creates coherent interference among paths that cannot always be treated as statistically independent. Long-range mesoscopic correlations link the behavior of separated paths. In this experiment, their influence was expressed as excess fluctuation width: the measurement departed from the correlation-free prediction even though its mean could stay close to baseline.

- Sticks To Magnetic Surfaces: Laminated magnets along the bottom lets you stick these to magnetic whiteboards for classroom demonstrations or helps secure them from falls on metal desks. This 2nd-generation version has stronger magnets than before to avoid slipping on weakly magnetic white boards.
- Kid-Friendly Design: These simple LED light sources are not hazardous to your eyes and the tough plastic housing is durable in falls. Alkaline AA batteries (not included) are securely housed inside a strong cover. Low-power laminated magnetic strips are glued into place on the bottom.
The authors report sensitivity in a regime of approximately 200 or fewer controlled input channels and one output target. That is a reported result for this optical setup, not a universal instrument specification. They contrast it with conventional transmission-eigenvalue approaches that may require very large transmission matrices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the experiment establishes—and what it does not
- Established: In the tested zinc oxide sample, enhancement fluctuations exceeded the finite-size correlation-free prediction in the strongly scattering regime, while average enhancement could remain close to that baseline.
- Not established: The researchers did not directly image hidden light paths, and the findings do not show that every opaque material has the same fluctuation behavior.
- Not demonstrated: The study did not produce a clinical imaging system or a deployed high-contrast imaging or metrology product. It identifies those fields as potential areas of relevance.
- Proposed, not tested here: The authors suggest that the mechanism may extend to acoustic, elastic, microwave, and matter waves. Their experiment itself was optical.
