Generative AI learns patterns from examples and uses them to produce responses to prompts. For text models, that often means generating a reply one token at a time. The result can sound confident and still be wrong: fluency is not evidence that a claim is true.

How does generative AI work?

A generative model learns statistical relationships in examples, then uses those learned patterns to create output in response to an input. A useful analogy is a system that has learned how words and ideas tend to relate and can continue or transform a prompt accordingly. It is not best understood as simply looking up a finished answer in a database.

For text, OpenAI describes ChatGPT as processing text in tokens and generating a response sequentially by predicting a likely next token. A token may be a word, part of a word, or another text unit. The model repeatedly generates the next token in context until it has produced a response. This is a high-level description of text generation, not a full explanation of every architecture or of image, audio, and other modalities. OpenAI’s explanation of how ChatGPT and its foundation models are developed describes its approach.

How does an AI model learn?

Training is the process of adjusting a model based on examples so it becomes better at representing patterns in them. The exact data sources, filtering, training methods, and development process vary by provider and model; there is no single recipe that applies to all generative AI.

OpenAI’s account of its own model development describes several stages, including data preparation, pretraining, post-training, evaluation, and improvement after deployment. These are OpenAI’s published categories and practices, not a guarantee that every provider uses the same sequence or methods. OpenAI’s account, published April 30, 2025, provides further detail.

Learning patterns does not mean a model is guaranteed to reproduce only novel material, nor does it mean it always retrieves a stored passage. The cited explanations do not establish a universal guarantee that models can never memorize or reproduce training material.

What does post-training contribute?

After pretraining, post-training methods such as instruction tuning can make a model more responsive to requests and more consistent with intended behavior or human preferences. That can improve how useful a response is, but it does not make the model infallible, perfectly safe, or perfectly aligned.

OpenAI’s publication on aligning language models to follow instructions reports remaining failures and discusses limitations in the English-language setting it studied. OpenAI also explains that its Model Spec describes intended behavior, rather than asserting that models already behave perfectly; training cannot anticipate every behavior or edge case.

Why does AI make things up?

A model can produce plausible-sounding text without having verified that it is true. OpenAI calls plausible but false outputs hallucinations; they can include fabricated citations. One contributing factor, according to OpenAI’s explanation of language-model hallucinations, is that training and evaluation practices can reward guessing rather than acknowledging uncertainty.

That is why a polished answer should be treated as a claim to assess, not as proof. OpenAI’s help documentation cautions: “But like any language model, it can produce incorrect or misleading outputs.” OpenAI’s article on whether ChatGPT tells the truth gives its guidance on this limitation.

  • Check important dates and factual claims against reliable sources.
  • Confirm quotations in the original source, rather than relying on a model’s wording or attribution.
  • Open cited references and verify that they exist and support the statement.
  • Use extra care when an answer affects health, finances, legal matters, safety, or other consequential decisions.

What limits how much a model can handle at once?

A model has a context limit: the prompt and the generated output together must fit within the maximum context length for that model. A long prompt leaves less room for the response, and content beyond the available context may not be usable in that request. The limit depends on the specific model and can change, so there is no one context-window number that applies to generative AI as a whole. See OpenAI’s API documentation on key concepts for its description.

What should you remember when using generative AI?

  • Generative models learn patterns from examples and produce output from input; text generation is often explained as predicting successive tokens.
  • Providers’ data and development practices differ, so a description of one provider’s process should not be treated as an industry-wide account.
  • Post-training can shape instruction-following and intended behavior, but it does not guarantee truth or safety.
  • Fluent responses can contain fabricated facts or citations. Verify material claims.
  • Context limits constrain the combined input and output, and vary by model.
