Fuel contamination can affect a private well if petroleum from a leaking tank, pipe, pipeline, vehicle, or spill moves through soil and reaches the groundwater that supplies the well. Petroleum can also reach surface water or travel as vapor into indoor air. Whether any of these pathways affects a particular property depends on local conditions: a nearby tank, gas station, fuel odor, or map distance is a reason to investigate, not proof that a well is contaminated.
This overview is U.S.-focused because it draws on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance. Outside the United States, contact the environmental and drinking-water authorities responsible for your area.

How fuel moves from a release into the environment
Petroleum products—including gasoline, diesel, and heating oil—can escape from underground or aboveground tanks, connected pipes, pipelines, vehicles, or spills. After a release, the product may seep into surrounding soil. Depending on the product and site conditions, contamination may then affect groundwater or surface water, or petroleum vapors may move underground and reach indoor air.
Groundwater is water beneath the ground that can supply a private well. If petroleum contaminants reach the groundwater feeding a well, the well may be affected. That is a possible pathway, not an automatic consequence of every release: a spill or leak does not by itself establish that contaminants reached groundwater, traveled to a particular property, or entered a particular well.

EPA describes a typical underground storage tank release as one that can contaminate surrounding soil, groundwater, or surface waters, or affect indoor air spaces. The water pathway is therefore only one part of the assessment. EPA also cautions that petroleum releases can contain contaminants that make water unsafe or unpleasant to drink, and that exposure to contaminated soil or air can be harmful. Some releases may involve fire or explosion hazards.
Why a plume’s path depends on the site
Investigators cannot reliably determine a well’s risk from a map distance alone. Petroleum movement depends on where and how much product was released, the soil and geology, the depth of groundwater, and the direction groundwater flows. Groundwater depth and flow can vary seasonally, so conditions observed at one time may not tell the whole story.
The location and construction of wells and buildings matter too. A site investigation looks at the conditions that could carry contamination and the places people or the environment could be exposed. EPA guidance calls for establishing geology, groundwater depth and seasonal variation, flow direction, migration pathways, and potentially affected receptors. The resulting picture is site-specific; two nearby properties may not have the same pathway or risk.

Soil or groundwater may be contaminated while vapors are also evaluated, or contamination may be confined to an area away from a well. A qualified investigation determines what has been affected rather than assuming that every possible route is present. A private well’s location relative to the suspected source is one useful fact, but it has to be considered alongside groundwater flow, geology, well construction, and sampling results.

Can fuel contamination affect my well water?
It can, if contaminants from the release reach the groundwater supplying the well. But neither proximity nor a gasoline or fuel-oil smell in water confirms the source, identifies the contaminant, or establishes whether the water is safe. Odor is a signal to seek local advice and appropriate testing, not a substitute for analysis.
Changes in smell, taste, or appearance should prompt a call to the local health department or environmental agency, but the senses cannot identify what is present or measure exposure. Some contaminants may not be noticeable. Conversely, an odor alone does not prove petroleum contamination. Do not treat water as safe based only on how it looks or smells; ask local officials whether to avoid using it for drinking, cooking, or other purposes while testing is arranged.
EPA lists volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as a testing concern when well water smells of gasoline or fuel oil, or when a well is near a gas station or buried fuel tank. That guidance identifies situations in which VOC testing may be relevant; it does not mean that every nearby well is contaminated or that a single broad test covers every possible fuel-related contaminant. The suspected product and local conditions help determine which substances need to be checked.

EPA recommends that private-well owners test annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH. This routine annual panel is not the same as a petroleum VOC test. If fuel contamination is suspected, ask local health or environmental officials which additional tests are appropriate for the product and local groundwater concerns.

| Testing question | What EPA guidance says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Routine annual well testing | Test for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH each year. | Keep this routine testing separate from an investigation of a suspected fuel release. |
| Possible fuel-related concern | VOCs are a concern to consider when water smells of gasoline or fuel oil, or a gas station or buried fuel tank is nearby. | Ask the local health department or environmental agency about VOCs and other locally relevant contaminants. |
A laboratory or regulator can help identify the analytes—the specific substances to measure—and the collection method. Testing should fit the suspected product, site conditions, and local concerns. The collection point, timing, and handling instructions matter; follow the laboratory’s and agency’s directions rather than choosing a generic test and interpreting it alone. A sample from the wrong tap or collected contrary to the laboratory’s instructions may not answer the question officials are trying to resolve.
When comparing laboratories or testing arrangements, ask whether the relevant state or local authority accepts or approves the laboratory, whether the analyte list matches the suspected fuel and local concerns, where and how the sample must be collected, what reporting limits and turnaround time apply, and who will interpret the results and recommend follow-up. A reporting limit is the lowest concentration a laboratory reports under its method; ask the laboratory or agency whether it is appropriate for the decision being made. EPA guidance supports local consultation and contaminant-specific testing; it does not establish particular vendors, prices, or service levels.
A result applies to the substances tested, the sample collected, and the time it was taken. A negative result for one analyte or one sampling event should not be generalized to contaminants or conditions the test did not cover. Ask the agency or laboratory whether additional analytes, a different sampling location, or repeat sampling is warranted. Do not assume a general home water kit includes petroleum VOCs or is accepted for an official investigation. No particular consumer kit is established as a substitute for locally directed, fuel-specific testing.
What to do if you suspect a release near a well
- Address immediate danger first. If there is an immediate fire, explosion, or acute safety hazard, contact emergency services. Do not approach or handle a suspected leak or free petroleum.
- Contact local authorities. For an unusual fuel odor, visible leak, sudden tank loss, or suspected release near a well, ask the local or state environmental agency or health department what to do. They can advise on reporting, water use, and appropriate testing for your location. If you are unsure which office handles the concern, start with the local health department or environmental agency and ask to be directed to the responsible program.
- Ask whether to use the water while testing is arranged. Do not decide from appearance or odor alone. Follow local health officials’ advice on whether to avoid using the water for drinking, cooking, or other purposes.
- Arrange testing through an appropriate laboratory or agency. Ask which contaminants to test for, how and where to collect the sample, and whether further testing or repeat sampling is needed. Use the specified collection directions so results can be interpreted in context.
- Leave cleanup and investigation to qualified responders. Do not excavate contaminated soil, handle free petroleum, or install a treatment system without agency or qualified-professional direction. A release can involve vapor, fire, waste-handling, and monitoring issues beyond a household test.
Reporting rules and the agency responsible can vary with the release. A confirmed UST release should be reported to the relevant implementing agency, but residential heating-oil tanks and other petroleum releases may be governed by state or local rules rather than federal UST regulations. Promptly contacting local or state officials helps establish which requirements and response instructions apply; do not assume that the same process applies to every tank type or location.

What happens in a release investigation
For a confirmed underground storage tank (UST) release, EPA describes a response that starts with confirming and reporting the release, then stopping or containing its source. Investigators determine how far petroleum has moved, recover mobile free product where present, and sample soil and groundwater for contaminants relevant to the petroleum released. Depending on the site, sampling may also include soil gas.
“Free product” refers here to petroleum that can be recovered as a separate mobile product, rather than contaminants dissolved in groundwater or present in soil. Its presence, extent, and recovery are matters for a qualified response; homeowners should not attempt to remove it. The investigation’s job is to establish where the release went and assess potential risks to wells, buildings, and other receptors. The steps and sampling scope depend on the release and the site, so an investigation is not simply a single water test.
Reporting and cleanup requirements depend on the release type and jurisdiction. States and territories are the primary implementing agencies for UST cleanup rules. Some residential heating-oil tanks and other petroleum releases may fall under state or local requirements rather than federal UST regulations. Contact the responsible local or state agency for directions specific to the tank, product, and location. EPA’s cleanup process emphasizes site characterization: understanding geology, groundwater depth and seasonal variation, flow direction, migration routes, and which wells, buildings, or other receptors could be affected.

How widespread are U.S. UST releases?
As of September 2025, EPA reported more than 581,000 confirmed UST releases, nearly 528,000 cleaned-up sites, and about 54,000 sites remaining. These are UST program counts across the United States; they are not counts of contaminated private wells and do not establish the condition of any individual property. The figures provide national context, not a way to estimate the risk at a particular address.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can fuel contamination affect my well water?
Yes, if contaminants from a release reach the groundwater supplying the well. Whether that pathway exists depends on site-specific conditions, so a nearby tank, gas station, or spill is a reason to ask local officials about investigation and testing—not proof that the well is contaminated.
Does a gasoline smell in well water mean the water is contaminated?
A fuel odor is a reason to seek local health or environmental advice and ask about appropriate testing, including VOCs. Odor does not identify the substance, establish the source, or show whether water is safe; do not rely on smell or appearance alone.
Does annual private-well testing check for fuel contamination?
EPA recommends annual testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH. That routine panel is separate from petroleum VOC testing. Ask local officials which additional analytes and sampling method are appropriate if fuel contamination is suspected.
Should I use a home water test kit or install a filter?
A generic home kit is not established as a substitute for a fuel-specific investigation, and the appropriate treatment cannot be chosen from odor or proximity alone. Contact local officials or a qualified professional before selecting a test or installing a treatment system; follow their advice on water use while testing is arranged.
The Bottom Line
Fuel can affect a private well only if a pathway carries contaminants into the groundwater supplying it, and that pathway must be established for the site. Odor, proximity, and map distance can prompt investigation but cannot diagnose a well. Contact local health or environmental officials, use testing suited to the suspected fuel and local conditions, and leave release investigation and cleanup to qualified responders.
